Ontario to attach 10-year licence to first auto theft conviction

- New legislation would attach a 10 year driver's licence suspension to a first conviction for auto thefts involving violence, the use of a weapon or where financial gain was the motive. That suspension could extend to 15 years for a second offence and a lifetime driving ban for a third. Ontario's Transportation Minister outlined more details about the bill this morning.

It’s a very small step…not sure car thieves care about the status of their DL. What needs to happen is thieves need to be in jail for 5-10 years, suspending a license is inconsequential. They need to be behind bars…period.
no this is a good law because it further prevents them from job opportunities and travel by car far into their later lives and well past the date they did the crime. This is great!

You don't even need a license to break into a car lol. By the time someone reports the car stolen, it will be loooong gone, so the traffic stop is meaningless.

A license ban will mean nothing to a career auto theft person, minimum 6 mths jail, 1st offense and forfeit of license for 5yrs.

This is at least a step. Even if it's not amazing. I think most people mygrating to Canada should have to wait at least a year before they can even apply for a license. Tired of truckers from India driving like they're in their home country. So many accidents.

Anyone who thinks that a car thief is going to be intimidated or deterred by a potential license suspension is just not paying attention.
This is not about being intimidated...This is about stacking. If a car thief keeps his license, drives a car and cause an infraction, not much is going to happen other than a ticket. If he has no license tho, tougher punishment can then be put into action.

It's about time. But this is a tiny deterrent. We need to remove the activist judges that let these criminals off the hook. Keep them locked-up or else they'll never respect our laws.
This is what criminals mean when they say the laws in Canada are a joke. No criminal has ever been concerned about driving without a license. This weakest of weak band-aid solutions even specifies it applies only if violence is used, a weapon is involved, or if money is being made. Why the protectionist clauses for criminals? It's like they're implying there's a circumstance where auto theft is justified. I'm not advocating for vigilantism but clearly you can't count on law enforcement or the judiciary. Listen to this speech and you realize this law was made specifically for the wrong way crash on the 401 that killed a baby and grandparents. Lawmakers aren't here to deal with the problem as a whole, they're doing this as a response to a specific instance. What's next? Auto theft criminals will have the rates go up on the insurance they don't buy anyways? As the guy stated, "this is about sending a message to Ontarians that we're taking auto theft seriously". What it isn't is an effort to stop auto theft. What a joke. Honestly, auto theft has the best ROI of anything out there. Either steal cars or live in a tent, welcome to Ontario!

They really think criminals wouldn't drive without a license. How often are criminals pulled over to have their licenses checked, why not proposing a minimum sentence of 14 years for car theft, minimum sentence of 20 years for shooting. , cuz we don't have enough rooms in our prisons.
In Alberta a few years ago a man driving down the street passed a news crew. And the passenger yes passenger leaned out the window and yelled A vulgar slur so the camera and female news reporter could hear and what he yelled was F@*k her in the a*$
Sure I imagine the driver didn’t tell him not to. And on another occasion a man was driving down the street and he had a bumper sticker that said F@*k Harper and another who had a set of metal bulls balls/genitals hanging from the tow hitch.
The three drivers all received stunting charges. The first case that involved the passenger yelling obscenities was not charged but the driver was as the news camera operator was able to get the license plate number.
Fortunately the judges in each case stated the this was not what the law meant by stunting.
The wording is too vague in a country where we have interpretive law as a rule.
And if, and yes we have some police officers who would and can make your life miserable by simply laying the charge and then watch you jump through hoops to prove it’s not true or even fair. Driving is yes something you need to be qualified to do. But in the same breath is a necessity in a country as big as Canada.
The crime is theft so deal with the theft.
Example. If someone is arrested for stealing milk. We don’t ban them from dairy products we jail them for stealing milk.
The Ontario government is introducing some bizarre new laws.
Example, if you are stopped/pulled over near Toronto for any reason, you now have to pass a sobriety investigation.

How about all “refugees”, non/temporary/student residents or any others that have become citizens in the last 10 years immediately lose privileges and are put on a plane immediately after conviction to be deported back to their home country? Coming to Canada should be a privilege, breaking the law here means you should lose the entirety of those privileges.

Good step in the right direction, it’s sad that the federal government refuses to address the issue of auto theft, At least Ford is using what tools available to do something. License suspension doesn’t sound like much, but when paired with plate auto-scanners, it greatly increases the chances of the police catching the thieves in the act
It's important to note, this is likely the max the Ontario government can do in the face of federal liberal intransigence with regard to rampant crime.

Average person in Ontario is paying much higher insurance for these thieves, all level of government should work together a long time ago, and still need to work to every license office have access to serial numbers of all vehicles in North America because 30 percent of the vehicles now are sold here,

In the 80s grand theft auto got a person 2years less a day in Ontario and that was for first offence if you had a record for anything! 2nd offence got you double ! 3rd offence doubled it again ! This is stupid if you just loose your license! Most car theives don’t have one to begin with! When they are usually illegal immigrants or foreigner students that are committing these car thefts they can just flee the country!!! Rediculous!
Also attach on credit report, health card, PR or citizen card, bank card, credit card, home ownership documents (if they have any home).

10 years in jail for the first offense
Deportation or life in prison for the second offense.
Put them in jail for life for first offence, why wait till third offence.

Article 441 also provides for imprisonment of up to seven years if theft is committed during night time and by a person carrying a weapon.
If a person has committed robbery by coercion or threat to use a weapon with the purpose of either keeping, obtaining or running away with the stolen goods, he shall be punished with imprisonment ranging between three years to fifteen years under Article 438 of the …. Penal Code.

This is just for optics. I think risking your license is not going to discourage someone willing to cross the moral line of stealing a car. Sociopaths do not care. What motivates a sociopath to alter their behavior is accountability. So if you want to make a safer Canada, you build more prison infrastructure. You give them a sentence that will actually discourage a sociopath. Also, landed immigrant status should come with a probationary period that is revoked if you commit a major crime.
