The ECHR (European Court of Human Rights) has confirmed that in spring 2014 Russia carried out an armed aggression against Ukraine in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. In late summer 2014, a full-scale invasion began. The Court's judgment states that the invasion began no later than August 2014. The Court established that active Russian military personnel had been present in Donbass since April 2014. It also found that Russian soldiers had fought in armed groups and that high-ranking Russian military personnel held command positions in separatist armed groups and entities from the very beginning. The Court also found that as of 11 May 2014, all areas held by separatists claiming to be from the DPR and LPR were areas under direct Russian control. The Court did not rule out that the invasion began before that date; It refers to the date from which Russia's legal responsibility begins. The ECHR concluded that the large-scale deployment of Russian troops took place no later than August 2014, in the context of the Battle of Ilovaisk. Beyond confirming the Russian presence in eastern Ukraine, the judgment also sets out criteria for assessing human rights violations committed by Russia during the occupation, including: The shooting and torture resulting in the deaths of Ukrainian civilians and prisoners of war; Torture, including sexual violence, rape, inhuman and degrading conditions of detention; The establishment of organizations for forced labor; Kidnappings, illegal arrests and long-term illegal detentions; Religiously motivated attacks; The persecution of journalists and the blocking of Ukrainian broadcast channels; The destruction and illegal appropriation of private property; Ban on teaching in Ukrainian; Persecution of persons of Ukrainian nationality or citizens supporting the territorial integrity of Ukraine.
