Thanks to all who have liked and shared comments. If not for Bardwell Smith (the Producer) who instigated the garden's creation at Carleton College, the garden and this documentary would not exist. If at all possible, come and visit this exquisite small garden, you will not be disappointed.
Carefully thought out narrative and video. As landscape architect and garden art historian I never feel really comfortable with reproductions but also still enjoy using Japanese philosophy for creating my own environments, having studied its application to landscape design for most of a lifetime. One thing I enjoy about it are the concordances with Sufi landscape design, which one sees also in this garden. Very welcome is the input from the people caring for it.
Very fortunate for you to have access to Lake Superior and her great stones.Every summer I go home to Marquette Michigan and I spend hours on Lake Superior collecting rocks and love every single minute of it!
Nature has its own creative tranquility that Japanese gardens simply tailor. Its ultimately placing a piece of nature inside four walls and it has to be indigenous plant life. Here in Cape Town a fynbos mountain layout would be the ideal sustainable and beautiful garden.
This a great video. It is an excellent philosophical overview that doesn’t get held down in fine details yet provides enough details that someone course start that journey or creating their own art.
Absolutely amazing explanation on Japanese garden and design elements. I hope to visit some time and take some of the things I learned into my own 'zen' garden at a much smaller scale.
beautiful video, I loved the explanation of asymmetric balance, and the importance of balancing Triangle Acoord ( Client´s needs, site & Landscape & local material)
@@dancingsunmedia do you have more videos on Japanese garden design? There is hardly anything good on RUclips that explains you the philosophies and the practices and techniques used to express the philosophies in your design. Any video, online course or book recommendations on this please?
if you would please allow, I would love to set some of this film to music. Please let me know when you can. The photography of the gardens is beautiful. namaste' CM
IMHO: ...Although NATURE create the proper "feeling", Naturally, without any loos of "integrity".... Japanese Gardens strive to approximate the LOCAL Natural Landscape, as it SHOULD LOOK. Too often, Americans just don't appear to be able to pull it off, even close to this "ethic'. Mostly, the create an "ARTIFICIAL, CONTRIVED, MANICURED ASSEMBLY OF RANDOM, "ALIEN SPECIES", with virtually NO ECOLOGICAL BENEFIT TO INSECTS, OR BIRDS, act like mismatched JIGSAW PIECES, THAT FAIL TO WORK TOGETHER, FAIL TO SETTLE INTO THEIR NATURAL ROLE IN THE LANDSCAPE, AND FAIL TO EVOLVE, INTO THEIR MATURED, SUCCESSION PHASE, ALL THE WHILE APPEARING AUTHENTIC, AND FUNCTIONAL. LET NATIVE PRAIRIE BE NATIVE PRAIRIE, AND NATIVE FOREST BE NATIVE FOREST....
Sorry to hear. My film cannot possibly capture its remarkable beauty. Visit Carleton College to see for yourself if you can. The Journal of Japanese Gardening placed this garden in the top ten Japanese-style gardens in America.
Now, 10 years later, would be a good time for an update on this work of art in progress!
Good suggestion Cornell....it is in the works

Incorporating the leaves into the concrete is so cool.
Thanks Su Yen. The landscape artist who designed the garden came up with the idea.
Finally a video on this topic with soothing music in the background!

A valuable film.

The sounds of the water fall are too loud, not tranquil at all. Perhaps should reduce the speed of the flow...

3 SHADES of Green...and lots of twaddle talk...hey..!
Too contrived. No colour. Gravel. Horrible 'garden' for me.
