This album’s an undoubted 10 for me. The unlikely pairing of Zappa and GFR brings a huge payday! In a reaction video to Out To Get You a thirty something reviewer noted the energy levels were through the stratosphere, more like Grand Funk Spaceship than Railroad! I agree 😀

In the retail music biz, back in the halcyon days of yore, we had a nickname for MCA Records. ESPECIALLY when it came to rock bands and artists. We called them the Music(al) Cemetery of America!
Just ask Night Ranger, Triumph, Grand Funk Railroad, Alice Cooper, Dream Theater, The Hooters, Kansas, Raffi, etc. Okay, all right, I’m just kidding about Raffi, but the others - I’m sure - all have horror stories to tell about the label. Especially in the 80s.
Another fine entry in this series.
Looking forward to the August edition next month.
    Cheers from The Big Apple.
Rock Out, Prog On and Choogle!
    Your clone and mine,

Yes, I remember Black Oak Arkansas put out a great album after a few average albums, it was called X-Rated, but it probably sold about as much as Grand Funk's album for MCA.

Crossfire, 1976 and the bonus track Rubberneck are just killer! Glad to see this album get some love! Great show and discussion! an 8/10 for me!
Are you guys going to discuss the last two albums? they are mediocre but have a few good tracks on both!

I first bought this record when I was a kid in the late-70s... from a cut-out bin (at McCrory's) for 99 cents!
It's a decent album, some hits and misses. The production is lackluster... below the level of Jimmy Ienner & Todd Rundgren. The guitar work by Zappa on Out to Get You is decent but a bit out of place, and his guitar tone is weak, imo.
Don't Let 'Em Take Your Gun is much more relevant now than in 1976!
Awful album cover, their worst. All the Girls... is bad, but it's kinda funny, plus the vinyl came with an awesome full-color iinsert with artwork by Neal Adams (one of the greatest comic book artists in history).
My 10th favorite GFR studio album.
    7/10
    Enjoyed the discussion!

One thing about Capitol... they sure pumped the $$ into GF with those album covers. They spared no expense. Thanks for the comment!

Great comments! Love hearing stories about how we came across or purchased certain albums. Ah, those were the days.
My critiques about production are less focused than a lot of rabid music fans. It has to be really bad to take away from the overall enjoyment of any album. I like Zappa’s production here but we all hear things differently.
Love Zappa’s lead work on “Out To Get You”. From what I understand, there was little to no planning. He just strapped on his guitar of choice that was available and just started wailing. Very different approach to be sure, but I really like it!
Agree with you about “Don’t Let ‘Em Take Your Guns”. Very relevant today, especially since the nonsense of 2019. It’s not only criminals you have to protect yourself against, it’s your own government! Witness the lockdown nonsense that happened to Australia, New Zealand and Canada. All unarmed citizenry. It was bad here but much worse there.
I like this album cover. It fits the vibe of the album. Although Mel is creeping me out a bit! Also like the cover for “All The Girls”. I know what they were going for and it was a signal that the band had changed to a more lighthearted pop rock approach. But I understand how a lot of folks weren’t going along with the new direction.
I agree about Neil Adams. One of my favorite comic book artists of all time! I rate that album much higher, a 9.0. But we all hear things differently.
Thanks for tuning in and your great comments!

@@loungedweller Agreed, and I was a GFR fan right from the beginning. I loved their more pop stuff right along with their bombastic early hard rock. So that switch that really came with All The Girls didn't set me off the tracks!

10th sounds about right. I like: "Pass It Around", "Out To Get You" & "Don't Let 'Em Take Your Gun". I liked Born To Die that came out the same year much more personally...Closer To Home (coming up?) is a MUCH better album that HAS to be featured...Same experience as Grant at the time - me and my friends were pretty much unaware of the band & when their hits came on radio it was often like 'who's that?' Except for "We're An American Band"

HUGE Grand Funk RR fan from the early days. Once they shed Terry Knight, they just weren't anywhere near the same. I liked some of it (Amer. Band album was strong). But Rundgrens mix was odd and a weird fit for them. All The Girls...was just junk,IMO. They totally lost me there. I did get into Born To Die way after the fact. Good Singin' ..was ok to decent. But the power trio early stuff was the band firing on all cylinders. Once Phoenix came along....that album was anemic! Everything from On Time to E Pluribus is GFRR,IMO. T
