Vicky don't overthink it. A proper BLT is made on toasted bread, it is not a toasted sandwich. We don't toast sandwiches with lettuce, tomato or mayo. Simply toast the bread in a toaster so it gets toasted on both sides. Then add your mayo on both slices. Add the warm bacon, and the cold lettuce and tomatoes. Lettuce tomato and mayo can get nasty when heated. You're doing fine.

I feel like this is one of those children's instructional lessons, where you have to be as descriptive as possible to avoid confusion. The sandwich is on toast. It's not toasted. 😂
It’s a pretty sandwich. But if you want an American BLT you toast the bread first. This is Anglicized. And that’s ok too. Just say you don’t want to make it the American way. So it becomes an English BLT not American.
😂😂😂 Love it❤ But I would just toast or griddle the bread before putting any of the BLT on, as you want the contrast of the hot bacon and cold vegetables.
Yes, use the residual bacon fat on the griddle to toast the bread, then add the mayo, fresh cold veggies and bacon. To me a grilled sandwich includes the fillings when grilling. But you toasted the bread without heating up the filling, so it should be better.
My thought too. I think they don’t understand that Americans like the contrasts of hot and cold or crunchy and soft that makes this particular sandwich so good. So she Anglicizes it by adding butter and grilling.
Toast in the US means dry bread, either in a toaster or an oven, until both sides are browned to your liking. Buttering bread and putting it on a skillet or griddle until one side is browned is actually fried bread (cooked in a fat), although you wouldn't typically hear anyone call it that. The closest thing would be a "grilled cheese". Dry toasted bread creates a moisture barrier that keeps the moisture from the mayo, lettuce and tomatoes from making it soggy.
Hey Vicki, we can call this one close enough. You wouldn't cook/put heat to the lettuce or tomato. You would toast the bread and then assemble the sandwich with cold lettuce and tomato. The bacon was really the most important thing. You used American bacon this time and made it crispy, which was very important, so we'll say close enough on the sandwich 😃 good job, Vicki
I'm not going to stop her from trying again. I mean if she wants to enjoy a BLT sandwich and use the excuse the comments were saying things were wrong, I'm not going to stop her at all.😆 I'm sure if there's a next video, it will be the one.
@@TheOtherBill I agree that that's a little strange for a BLT. But I understand her decision to use it due to how she chose to toast the bread. But yeah, butter generally shouldn't be on a BLT. Make toast in a toaster or toaster oven and skip the toasting on the griddle (a thus the butter)
Generally speaking, when Americans talk about toasting bread, we mean in a toaster, or in the oven with dry heat. Both sides of the bread are crispy. What you did is like what we we do for grilled cheese and similar sandwiches - a fat of some sort is applied to the exterior surface, and it’s cooked on a grill pan or skillet.
Step 1. Cook crispy bacon, and place it on paper towels to absorb the grease. Step 2. Slice your tomato and iceberg lettuce. Step 3. Toast bread (whichever way you prefer). Both sides need to be toasted. Step 4. Now is when you spread mayonnaise on the inside of the toasted bread. Step 5. Assemble bacon, lettuce, and sliced tomatoes over the mayo side (the inside) of the toasted bread. Note: You want your lettuce to be crisp and your tomato to be fresh and cold. VOILÀ!! You have just successfully made an American-style BLT. Practice makes progress. Vicky, you are doing great!😘
That is a grilled sandwich. The insides are heated inside the buttered bread. Toasted is from the toaster and everything is put together after so the lettuce doesn't wilt.
Nobody's mad about how you did the BLT before and I'm sure it made a good sandwich, but it's just not the usual American way. Here's how most of us do it: Yeah, we "just pop (the bread) in the toaster (or toaster oven)". AFTER IT'S TOASTED, we apply the mayo (to one or both pieces of toast--your choice) and pile on the lettuce, tomato and bacon, close it up with the second piece of toast and eat. ANY seasoning is to taste. The bacon, as you did it, looks perfect by the way. Honestly, who knew there were so many ways to make a BLT, the simplest of sandwiches?
Exactly the way I do mine! My favorite sandwich is a BLT. The only difference is I put the tomato on the mayonnaise side with a little salt on it YUMMMMMMMY❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Yes, I suspect most Americans have never seen the bread done like grilled cheese as you did - I’ve always seen it plain, right out of the toaster, then mayo spread on one interior face. It isn’t really expected to be a hot sandwich. But that is minor, and I can imagine your way tastes great. Other than that, it looks like a classic BLT! And I’m glad you agree that it was worth a second try. And now that you’ve had the classic, feel free to break the rules. I don’t eat iceberg lettuce or white bread, so mine is always whole wheat with romaine, sometimes mixed with greens like you did the first .
Bacon looks way better, great with the iceberg, thank you sooo much for putting the mayo on the bread this time as well. I really like that you made a second try :) As others have said though, you can toast the bread before assembling in a toaster because the lettuce and tomato are supposed to be cold not cooked inside. They were correct when they said toast it first. Hot lettuce would be just wilty… the beauty comes from the freshness of the veggies and the warmth of the bacon to contrast. Much closer though! Another good variation is a BLAT, which is with added avocado, yum.
This is us not being clear enough. We toast the bread in the toaster first, then we put the sandwich together, salt and pepper the tomatoes in the sandwich. It is meant to eat fresh, not reheated. I love you guys, not truing to discourage, only trying to help you get it authentic for a real experience.
@@laminar0886 or if they enjoy it that way-toasted- then it’s fine, but I LOVE bacon sandwiches!! I kinda hope they’re try it without heating up the whole thing.
Bacon is perfect. Traditionally you toast your bread then put mayo on and place your lettuce, tomato and bacon on the toasted bread. If your technique works and you like it go for it!
I love that folks are concerned that you do it the standard way. The point being you have a baseline before you start modifying the recipe to your taste. Not demanding that it’s the only way, just to know the “standard” first. 😂
You are wonderful, Ms. Vicki! All the correct ingredients and toasted bread (okay, "grilled bread"! Brava! You are priceless! (Edited to add the "grilled bread" mention)
As others have explained about toasting the bread alone in a toaster (as opposed to the way you "toasted" the sandwich - which we would call a grilled sandwich [akin to a grilled cheese sandwich] ), there's a specific reason for toasting the bread in a toaster first. Toasting the bread in a toaster toasts both sides of each slice of bread. The bread needs to be toasted on both sides so that when the mayonnaise is spread on each slice, the mayo doesn't cause the bread to get too soft (or "soggy"). In addition to the flavors of the ingredient combination, the "crunch" of the sandwich is a major part of the epicurious experience of a BLT (the crunchy bread, crunchy crisp bacon, and crunchy cold iceberg lettuce - the mayo and sliced cold tomato are for the additional layers of flavors).
Thanks for the re-do! This is a lot closer than your first try even though that first one still looked very tasty. And yes, that bacon is now exactly right for a BLT! We don't usually toast the whole sandwich, just the bread though. The sandwich itself is a mostly cold sandwich that just happens to have toasted bread and crispy bacon for texture. Its best served when the toast and bacon are still slightly warm but they can be room temp. The lettuce and tomato should be cold or room temp always. Usually what I do with the lettuce is peel several entire leaves of lettuce off of the head of lettuce and put them whole on the sandwich (folded if needed for size) rather than having chopped lettuce. The salt and pepper on the tomatoes is perfectly fine and a great idea. Steps: 1) toast the bread (usually a toaster, but doing it on the griddle both sides is fine if you want to be fancy) and butter is not needed. 2) spread mayo on one side of both slices of toast. I tend towards putting more mayo than less, but its up to taste. 3) Add lettuce, tomato and bacon to one slice of toast in that order. 4) put the other slice on top and cut into 2 triangles. Serve as-is without heating or toasting further.
Better! But not quite right. Lol, I'm dying! Your mom did such a great job. *The thing is, we said toast the bread, not the sandwich.* Great bacon 🥓!!!
I prefer the bread in the toaster. Crispy on both sides. Grilling with the lettuce on will wilt it, reducing the crispy crunch of lettuce. Either way toasting bread is a must!
Great video! I can understand how this sandwhich might be a little confusing. You want to keep the veggies and the mayo cold. Toast the bread on both sides first, then NO BUTTER! and add the mayo, lettuce, bacon and tomato. Believe me it's the best this way!
First let me say thank you for the full episode! That was super nice for all viewers to enjoy! Second thank you for trying again! Your videos are fun and we really love to help see you succeed! The bacon looks perfect this time! Ut oh .. no butter on the bread. Just toast the bread in a toaster! Just plain dry toasted bread from the toaster! The Mayonnaise goes on after the bread is toasted! But was glad you are using mayonnaise and not salad cream. Oh no! Lettuce and tomato should be cold! You have the right lettuce this time but it should be cold! Salt and pepper on the tomatoes is a fine touch! You have all the right ingredients this time: White bread, streaky bacon, real mayonnaise, iceberg lettuce and tomato! Now we just need to make sure the bread is toasted in a toaster, the lettuce and tomato are cold, and we assemble accordingly! Lol. This is a lunch sandwich not a menu breakfast item. Overall the only thing that should be hot is the bacon! Great try! Hugs from America! Thank you for the full episode and 3 times a charm!💗
not sure about the buttering bread and griddle.. toaster is what we all do.. It keeps the tomato from soaking into the bread. And Lots of mayo for me. Mom did the bacon perfectly by the way,,,, I cook mine in the oven.. 30 min at 300.. perfect
You don't need to put salt on the sandwich because the bacon is salty enough. Most people put the slices of bread in the toaster. When it pops up, put mayonnaise on one slice & then put the bacon, lettuce, and tomato on it.and them its done. Dont put any butter on it.
OMG! I've never had one buttered before. The BLT is supposed to be an easy sandwich to make. Toast bread, cook bacon, slice tomato, pull apart the lettuce. Put Mayo on the toast, then add the other ingredients. Done. Vicki, I think you're messing with me. Now let's talk about the stove. Wow!
I LOVE that they took the feedback on the video as constructive and didn’t get defensive. Bravo 👏🏼 to them and to Home Chef Vicki for being accepting to the comments. I know it can get crazy. But she’s doing a good job. I enjoy these videos. 🫶🏼
There really is a traditional method rather than a right or wrong way. I think the comments before were trying to express the traditional method. For my family it is lightly toasted bread in the toaster with no butter or oil. Then put one slice of bread down, mayo on the side up. Add your lettuce, tomato and streaky bacon. Next mayo on one side of the remaining slice of bread then mayo side down on the sandwich. The sandwich will be dry or oil free on the outside of the sandwich. Cut corner to corner to make two triangles. Better type of bacon this time. We would call putting the bread on the stove top as you did grilled. like a grilled cheese sandwich. You are a very good sport for giving it another go. you did well for sure
Nice looking bacon. My preferred way of building a BLT is to dry toast the bread in the toaster then put the mayo on one slice of toast, put the veggies on top of the mayo, then the bacon, then put mayo on the second slice of toast, add it and voilá BLT.
Oh darling Vicky, you didn’t do it wrong! We’ve just figured out that toast holds up better is all. You had the ingredients right, just keep at it doll, I just love your cooking spots ❤
toasted bread just adds an elegance to a sammich, salt and pepper brings out the sweetness of the tomatoes, the iceberg lettuce adds a nice crunch element to it. Bravo Vicky
I would get all your ingredients ready, the bacon, lettuce, and tomato. Then take your bread and put it in the toaster. When it pops back up, pull it out. Put on lots of mayo, then the bacon, lettuce, and tomato and enjoy. I think the toasting in the pan after it's all assembled could make the lettuce wilt and you want it fresh and crunchy, like the bacon. Lots of mayo and bacon.
Vicki did great! She read the comments and told us she was aware the bread should be toasted first but she did the most American thing and told us she’s going to try it her way. It is a personal preference. 🙌 Loved this video and I’m craving a BLT myself now!
Whenever I have had BLTs with family, each person gets their toast, but the bacon is cooked and on a plate, the lettuce pieces are in a little dish, and the tomatoes are sliced on a plate. Each person can then build their sandwich on the toast as they prefer, more or less lettuce, etc. You're doing wonderfully!
I only eat them untoasted if I'm making it. The fresher the bread, the better, IMO. Part of the enjoyment for me is contrast between the crispy bacon and lettuce and the soft fresh bread. Yum.
This was quite close! The only thing is not to heat the veg and the mayo- only toast the bread. 1) Cook the bacon. 2) Toast the bread. 3) Assemble the cold lettuce, tomato, and mayo with the warm bread and bacon. This is one of my favorite sandwiches with summer heirloom tomatoes and whatever lettuce I am growing- usually romaine. Good job!
Vicky your such a sweet person. I hope we don't upset you with our comments. If we didn't think of yall as family we wouldn't be so picky. It looked delicious. I like doing a grilled cheese and adding bacon to it. It's good too. Have a great day!
I don't think you did anything wrong the first time around. I think we're just telling you how we actually do it so you can experience it the way we have it. Keep up the good work! 💜🇨🇱
Toast the bread first (preferably just in a toaster), then make the sandwich with the toasted bread. Cold lettuce, cold tomatoes, crunchy bacon. Maybe spread a little mayonnaise on the bread.
You want the tomato & lettuce cold - not heated like a panini. Use a toaster with dry toast. Only hot or warm part is the bacon. Then add the BLT parts & top with mayo = BLT Perfection. 3rd times the charm !!
Toasting the whole sandwich creates a tradeoff of qualities. Toasting is best, but toasting the whole sandwich wilts the lettuce. Iceburg is best cold and crisp. Iceburg wedges can be grilled and there are Asian recipes for boiled Iceburg, but they don't work on a BLT. This version is good.
If you want to make an American recipe, do it the way the Americans do-- then change it any way you like. Toast the bread in a toaster, then use mayo...assemble the streaky bacon, sliced tomato, and iceberg lettuce ...done. If you have some leftover chicken, toast another slice of bread, spread the mayo on one outside toast of the BLT and inside the third toast, add the sliced chicken and some lettuce.....then stack the triple decker together, dry toast side out. Secure this stack with longer toothpicks( the ones with those frilly tops) and cut on the diagonal into halves or fourths. This club sandwich has been around longer than the BLT and will impress your hubby. Grilling a sandwich after it's assembled, changes the mayo, may wilt the lettuce and tomato--if you like it, call it the English Grilled BLT, your own creation. Nothing wrong with that. Adding and subtracting ingredients is usual---adding sliced Swiss cheese, red onion, Deli ham slices or Dijon with the mayo. Just dont make it hard, it is an easy thing.
It's a lot easier to toast the bread first then build the sandwich but I can see this "deli style" tasting really good. Outstanding job, mom! Perfect ingredients! Yes, "streaky" bacon is the default cut of bacon and always presumed. I've never heard the term streaky bacon before.
You're doing a fantastic job Vickie. I would recommend a simpler way. Use the toaster to toast the bread, then assemble the sandwich. The bacon looked perfect. ❤
It looks beautiful! The bacon looked spot on, So long as the veggies and bacon are crisp when you bit into it , that's the most important part . it looked like a BLT!
I’ve had them toasted like that in restaurants. My method: 4 slices wheat bread in toaster oven. Slice tomatoes very thin so there’s 4 slices on each sandwich. Cook vege bacon. Instead of mayo I use creamy horseradish. Put a lettuce leaf on each slice of bread. Add 2 slices of tomato, add bacon, other two slices of tomato then put together and slice diagonally. Putting the lettuce on both outsides and the bacon in the middle stops the tomato and bacon from sliding off. Add a glass of unsweetened ice tea and you have a great meal.
Many other Americans might disagree, but for me a BLT totally depends on good tomatoes, especially homegrown. It's still good with grocery store tomatoes but with great tomatoes it's a whole different experience. If you liked this BLT, be sure to taste one in Summer.
I can’t even. It’s rage bait at this point. Crisp, cool iceberg lettuce and tomato, paired with warm bacon and toast - that’s the way!!! The temperature contrast is half the appeal. I just don’t understand “Hopefully we don’t have to go a third time” in one breath, and then in the next “I know everyone said to toast the bread first but I’m going to do it this way.” You guys are always entertaining, always charming. Sometimes maddening! 😂
I love how well you’re trying to follow and understand our food quirks when our comments are just “What are you doing?” Some people might make certain things with what they have on hand that’s tasty, but if there’s a beloved basic recipe that develops with wiggle room for personal taste, it’s because that basic recipe just works, and holds up better to make for good eats right away or to pack in a lunch for later. This should be a recipe Millie and James can pull off since the kitchen isn’t their domain. So technically both sandwiches made were fine but only one is a BLT. I’m glad you tried a BLT even if some comments might suggest just toasting the bread so you don’t need to use the extra steps for future sandwiches! Food suggestion: Latkes. Hanukkah starts December 25 this year and my non Jewish friends often ask for me to make them my family recipes because they love a good Jewish deli. Latkes are a fried potato pancake served with apple sauce and sour cream. Often served alongside a brisket (no sour cream depending on the Jewish family). I’d be happy to share my family’s fool proof recipe with Vicki- if she wants it! See if you can download and read “Herschel and the Hanukkah Goblins” as a beautifully done picture book for Hanukkah that tells some of the origins and traditions but is just a great read for all ages. Or watch Rugrats Hanukkah Special for that telling of the story to round out your knowledge, if you’re curious about it.
I'm like everyone else. Toast first and then put it together but, the way you did it sure does look really good and as long as you guys enjoy it then that's all that's important.
I’ve never had a BLT like that, but I have a British mom. I get how Vicki is thinking. Don’t get discouraged Vicki. There a lot of basic British dishes that we Americans have no clue how to make. And if your version tastes good, that’s a win in any book.
I have to say that I love your efforts 💖. Here's the proper way to make a BLT. You toast the bread and apply a thin layer of mayo, then add the fresh veggies and cooked bacon. Never toast the cold Veg. I appreciate your attempt. Love you from California ❤❤
When James and Millie tried theirs... they said it was HOT to hold... I can only imagine how wilted and warm the lettuce and tomato slices must have been!
Don't feel bad. I tried to make tea here in the States like you Brits do it, and failed miserably. This BLT is MUCH BETTER than the first one! It's close enough!
I toast my bread first, than put the BLT together, because I want the bacon hot,but the lettuce and tomato cold. That’s just me.
I came here to say this. It's the juxtaposition of hot bacon, warm toasty bread, cold lettuce & tomato and cool mayo.

Agree, she got it close enough to proper that the rest is just nit picking.
@@Locke99GS Except for the butter.
No wrong way BLT good amy you serve it❤
Generally speaking, when Americans talk about toasting bread, we mean in a toaster, or in the oven with dry heat. Both sides of the bread are crispy. What you did is like what we we do for grilled cheese and similar sandwiches - a fat of some sort is applied to the exterior surface, and it’s cooked on a grill pan or skillet.
Toast the bread before assembling--a BLT is a cold sandwich--warm lettuce sounds gross. But at this point we're just nit picking lifes too short haha
Toast bread in toaster THEN put it together with some warm bacon, mayo and fresh cold crisp veggies.
Vicky, you are doing great!😘
Again, that is not a BLT, that is a poor man’s Panini. Just toast, the friggin bread in a toaster, then put everything on it.😂
And lose all the butter!
The Mayo goes on the bread after it's toasted not before!
That is a grilled sandwich. The insides are heated inside the buttered bread. Toasted is from the toaster and everything is put together after so the lettuce doesn't wilt.
Most people just use toast out of the toaster so the bread is crispy on both sides.
Now I know why we had a revolution. Brits are stubborn 😂😂😂
lol. Them or us?
Toast the bread in the toaster, let it cool, THEN add the cold mayo, lettuce, and bacon. It’s super easy. And delicious.
Do NOT toast the whole sandwich. Defeats the purpose.
It’s not a toasted sandwich-it’s made on toasted BREAD.
Yes.. INDEED! I love that she's trying though. She'll get it right
@@laminar0886 or if they enjoy it that way-toasted- then it’s fine, but I LOVE bacon sandwiches!! I kinda hope they’re try it without heating up the whole thing.
@ YES!! It’s not a Panini 😂 They just need to know how to do it “properly”. Based on what most of us are used to.. and like.
No butter! That's a grilled BLT, not a BLT on toast. Use a toaster!
😂
You are getting closer!
*The thing is, we said toast the bread, not the sandwich.*
Great bacon 🥓!!!
might want to mention, toast both sides of the bread.
It's your own grilled version but it looks delicious. BEAUTIFUL 😊
Can’t wait for the 3rd attempt 😂
LOL. Definitely
Do you have any plans on how you might screw up such an easy task on your third attempt? Maybe you could add some herring or cover it in brown sauce.
Excellent, iceberg lettuce. You can use just the whole leaf and it maybe cleaner by helping pieces of lettuce to not fall out. It looks wonderful.
I prefer the bread in the toaster. Crispy on both sides. Grilling with the lettuce on will wilt it, reducing the crispy crunch of lettuce. Either way toasting bread is a must!
Veg and mayo goes on after bread is toasted,
Great video! I can understand how this sandwhich might be a little confusing. You want to keep the veggies and the mayo cold. Toast the bread on both sides first, then NO BUTTER! and add the mayo, lettuce, bacon and tomato. Believe me it's the best this way!
Yes! NO BUTTER! Stop with the butter!
You have all the right ingredients this time:
White bread, streaky bacon, real mayonnaise, iceberg lettuce and tomato!
30 min at 300.. perfect
She did say she likes to butter everything in one of her other videos
Wow!
Toast the bread then build the sandwich...
one reason to toast the bread in a toaster is you are using less fat. You already have mayo and streaky bacon. Butter is gilding the lily
You’re doing a fantastic job Ms Vicki! Keep up the good work 👩🍳🍳🥘
I agree 💯👏👏👏👏👏💙💙💙💙💙
Bravo Vicky
James, your mom is the sweetest and I'm really enjoying her cooking videos! She is doing great!
I give a 10 for effort…but give a 0 for research on how to make it.
Loved this video and I’m craving a BLT myself now!
The crunch from the bread and iceberg lettuce provides the proper texture...yummy.
Toast the bread in a toaster. Then put mayo ,bacon, lettuce and tomato on with a little salt and pepper.
The bacon looks perfect!
There is No Wrong way...but if you have time toasted is really good. Ive eaten many untoasted. 😂 thank you for having us in your kitchen!
How can you do wrong with bacon as the star? A regular bacon sammich is perfect.
I too have untrusted. Else I get scratches on roof of mouth.
Well, it's toasted bread first, then assemble. However, toasting like a grilled cheese sandwich is seemingly next level!
I have got to try that!
LOL, that's correct. My preference is to toast the bread while the bacon's cooking and then put the sandwich together. Your way looked a lot harder.
Yes, the toasted bread just adds another flavor and texture to it for sure. Those look beautiful. Great job!!!
Leave the woman alone 😂😂. You are doing great Vicky!
Its not a BLT unless you shred the roof of your mouth with the toast so the tomato can sting your mouth while you eat it
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
No Thanks 😊
I have been enjoying these videos so so much. Vicky is an absolute gem!
I just don’t understand “Hopefully we don’t have to go a third time” in one breath, and then in the next “I know everyone said to toast the bread first but I’m going to do it this way.”
You guys are always entertaining, always charming.
I love a woman Who cuts your sandwiches on the diagonal!
Now a few slices of avocado in the BLT just brings it up a notch.
I'm like everyone else. Toast first and then put it together but, the way you did it sure does look really good and as long as you guys enjoy it then that's all that's important.
Need to cut the sandwich diagonally from corner to corner. it makes it taste 15% better.
I prefer using the toaster so it’s toasted on both sides. You made a grilled BLT, which I may try.
Normally a BLT is on toast. What you did is "toast" the sandwich. Try sometime just toasting the bread before assembly.
Don't feel bad. I tried to make tea here in the States like you Brits do it, and failed miserably. This BLT is MUCH BETTER than the first one! It's close enough!
Bacon looks good Vicki. Perfect😊
