I knew his parents and they were really nice people. I worked next door to their ice cream stand in the early 80s. One night I was stranded at work after closing time so I walked to the ice cream stand to use their phone. They welcomed me inside, sat me down, gave me the phone and free ice cream. I was 19 at the time. They both always talked to me like an old friend when I went there. Long after they closed the ice cream stand, his father died in a farming accident. His mother died a few years later. But I knew Big John Stud HAD to be a nice guy because his parents were so nice.

You are correct during the cartoon era of the WWF wrestling was really popular It wasnt uncommon for a wrestler to get a quarter million dollar check on a good quarter if he had a wrestling figure out or a wrestling buddy. I saw an interview with HillBilly Jim where he was talking about those early merchandising checks.. Fun fact Big John won the 2nd Royal Rumble ever but there was no push behind it like there is today, in fact he was out of the WWF within 6 months

John Studd was one of my all time favorite wrestlers. Whether he was a heel or a face, he never failed to deliver when I watched him.
I never saw him live but I almost did back in June of 1989 at the Rockford Metro Centre in Rockford, IL. He was a face at that time and was scheduled to go against Andre, who was a heel. But it was as that time that Studd left and Hillbilly Jim took his place.
That was such a great time. Thanks. John, for the memories. Rest in peace, big man.
P.S. I was under the impression that Vince McMahon told John to step over the top rope. If this is so, the. John was in a conundrum- disobey Vince or incur Andre's wrath.

Met him at the Hammersmith Odeon 1985. Andre the Giant , Adrian Adonis and Big John Studd. Three of the nicest guys in wrestling. I initially didn't like Stuff because of his died with my idol Andre the Giant. But got talking to Adrian Adonis and John came over to talk to fans and he was really nice talking to everyone. Very kind to young fans.
Adrian Adonis and he messed around for the fans and it was funny as hell.
I miss all three of them now their all gone to the big square circle in the sky.
And Andre was fantastic as you'd expect. He was such a big guy. When he'd talk to younger fans they had him sit down on this huge chair. Funny thing is not one of those kids was ever worried about talking to him. The 12 yr old me included.
These guys earned the fans more than just in the ring.

Other wrestlers said Studd took steroids and human growth by the truck load he wanted to be as big as Andre and it most likely helped with his death not to mention his cancer . But huge props to Studd being married to the same woman not many wrestlers can say that. Sad day when studd passed he should have been a much bigger star but Hogan was too insecure and did everything he could to keep other wrestlers title runs from ever happening . It was a cutt throat business more then most people realize.

Met Studd as a kid…he literally sat in a room and signed about 30 autographs by chance (meaning this wasn’t a scheduled event). Not one complaint and took time with each person!
They say heels are the best people in real life- that was certainly true for Studd.

As a teenage kid, I watched most of his wrestling career back in the early 80's!

He was great 👍. Also, loved The Moondogs! Bill Smithson was an amazing person!

I still have a large toy figure of BJS from 1986 in a storage container. Also, at 3:05, and 12:47, the dark headstones have the very distinct Eastern Orthodox crosses. I did not know that BJS was an Eastern Orthodox Christian. This is interesting to me because there are very few of us in Eastern Orthodoxy who are represented in sports or entertainment.
With the saints give rest, O Christ, to the soul of Thy departed servant, John William Minton, where there is neither sickness nor sorrow nor sighing, but life everlasting. Amen. (An Eastern Orthodox Prayer).

Big John Studd has been the only professional wrestler I've seen out in the wild. It happened in the early 80s when I lived in Washington DC and worked downtown. I heard that he lived somewhere nearby in Virgina maybe? He looked so tall walking down the sidewalk and it was pretty cool.

I had a pair of thumb wrestle action figures of Hulk Hogan and Big John. They were marketed as big rivals in the early 80s!
