What I feel like a lot of people forget or ignore about this scene is that once she went down the first time, Accelerator was willing to leave her alive. He was confused about what the scientist meant about “finishing the experiment” because none of the bastards ever told him until this moment that the experiment required him to kill the clones. He agreed to it in the first place because he thought he would fight 20,000 clones, not necessarily kill them. And then right after the first clone died, the scientist just assured him they’re just “puppets”, not really alive, so this is all fine. Accelerator didn’t start out with the intention of murdering them all, but the slow escalation of the experiments made him more bored and cruel.
In reality, he was just a brainwashed and manipulated kid. As Last Order points out later, he kept trying to scare them off. He was totally willing to stop if they said the one thing that would prove his brainwashing wrong. "I don't want to die. I do want to fight you". The moment one of the clones did anything to show that they were not soulless puppets he regularly started putting his life on the line for them. If they ask him to, he'll save them as many times as it takes. He's basically resigned himself to permanent bodyguard/babysitter duty at this point.

They had multiple experiments where ambushes, traps and different weapons were all used against him to find a crack in his defenses but in the end they would never just outright GUESS that his reflection was near unbeatable. The more they tested his abilities the more they needed to test different methods in order to rule out an impenetrable shield.

Not at all. Accelerator still goes along. Following morals means to act, not to just feel regret. Any sinner can feel guilt, but if they don't stop sinning, they are not righteous.
However, Accelerator tried to intimidate the clones, make them show any sort of fear, and if they did, he would have stopped. But they continued to fight, not giving a thought to their own life, just like the scientists had told him. He had no reason to believe they were actually "Alive".
Accelerator wouldn't of stopped fighting if they just showed fear. He wanted them to run away and not follow the orders of the scientists by fighting him. He knew they were alive and "human", yet the reason why he never stopped is because they never stopped.
Giacomo Pellini yeah scientist today in real life are actually less moral than scientist of previous generation and I believe atheism has something to do with it.

+Ex308 Never really seen this series, but I know what this reflects in real life. This is essentially deconstructing human empathy, you have the person repeat the process of murder so many times over that the individual becomes dulled to empathy and suffering. It's the goal of militaries to produce soldiers like this.
He didn't "grow insane". Accelerator acted the way he did for two reasons: one, he was trying to scare the clones so that they'd stop obeying their orders and fighting; and two, he was sick of retards challenging him for the title of the strongest, so he was trying to scare them off, establishing that he was so strong that defeating him wasn't even a pipe dream.
And then got beaten by a level 0... I feel bad for Accelerator, he's worked so hard to prevent assholes from trying to fight him, but then getting beaten by Touma made it even worse. Not to mention that as soon as he tried to do something good and redeem himself, he ended up handicapped to the point where without the Misaka network, he can't use his abilities, talk, understand speech or even walk. Additionally, just stopping things from reaching him is also very easy as he can just multiply the vector by 0.
Also, our body also does some basic calculations subconsciously, like maintaining balance while walking, amount of hormones released, making sense with language etc. So It's not a big deal

He's my favourite character of the series no matter what he does. I'm one of those morons who ignore everything and just follows what they think is right. So in this case accelerator is right. End of story
I just noticed something that seriously freaked me out once I spotted it. The first misaka clone he fought had lively eyes... the one's in mid and late ten thousand's all have dead fish eyes. They share memories so I knew they have died lot but this really struck me how much they were effected. Eyes are mirror of the soul and all that.
@@Ixxlostinabox Yes but not in this case. Only in the Index seasons they have dead eyes, they have full gleaming eyes in all of Railgun which this segment is from, S2 to be exact. It would make perfect sense if that was the case but seeing that the series have very different high position animators, designers, and leads in each series in charge of things, having inconsistent character appearances is much more likely. In this case, its not a bad thing, they did great work as it is, it just happened.

@@johnathanhogan6679 The accelerator didn't mean to kill her, so he reflected the bullets so they wouldn't hit her. She shot a gun while he was talking and unknowingly reflected it, so he was hit by Mikoto. I'm sorry for my poor English.
I find that Accelerator's shirts show his personality at the time, at least to me, a very cool concept. Originally Black(Dark) representing his cold dark thoughts but beneath it is white showing his "purity" or him not really wanting to kill. Fast forward to his Touma fight where he is almost all black with small bits of white, which highlights his comments towards the Misakas and deep down still not wanting to kill them. Then after getting punched by Touman and meeting and saving Last Order his shirt becomes more white with little bits of black. Finally Spoilers He gets a coat that is pretty much all white.
I find this moment so sad, because although Accelerator didn't show much care or emotion, he pauses and appears to think about why he has to kill the clones. It's as if he doesn't want to do that, because the point of this (for him) is to become strong enough that no one will be willing to challenge him and get hurt. Ironically, what he has to do here is to hurt/kill others in order to not become one who kills or hurts those around him. When he's told he has to "dispose of" Mikasa clone 1, he doesn't take action, as if he's completely wondering why he should kill. This is contradictory to all the other actions we see him take, because the, he's too far gone into the dark and psychopathic. When she dies, he's surprised and I think he's taking in the fact that he killed someone (or another?), even though it was an accident, in a way, from his automatic reflection. It's sad that he just comes to accept it, but at least he changes later on.

His hair lacks any pigment due to the very nature of his power, so it defaults to white. That being said, I do think it looks a bit better as a platinum blonde.
Vengeful Spirit ok I remember him saying it, least I think he was the one that was explaining it. Still find it crazy that he can redirect things that move at the speed of light without even knowing it.
Only reson he was ok with killing them was because he convinced himself they where nothing but puppets untill he relised they where not just puppets but human he stated feeling sorry
Accelerator known it from the begining. He always tried to scare them away from the fight, but to no awail. Then the SISTER attacked, and he had to defend himself

Interesting how All the Level 5's have there own Metal issues: #1) Can't really tell the difference between right and wrong #2) God Complex, hates the thought of someone stronger #3) Her powers linked to her emotions, which she can barely control #4) Perfectionist, that can't stand the thought of failure #5) Paranoid, and Control obsessed #6) ??? #7) Delusional, honestly thinks he is a super hero
Any human is susceptible to such delusions - just google what happens to people, who unexpectantly get a position of power. Most charismatic leaders show such issues too.
technically 1) its not true, he knows he is doing bad things, and he knew that he should give up defending himself because he was killing everyone with his power as a child
Armando92 Come to think about it, the Accelerator that we all enjoy, making crazy faces, taunting people and using his powers creatively was pretty much created through the clone fights. Before the clone fights, every fight featuring Accelerator was just him standing still, not even defending, and everyone just dying in a mass of blood and explosions.
I just ended watchig the whole toaru series until now. And I have to say that of all the scenes, of all the dialogues in the seasons; this one will remain in my mind forever. The interaction between the first MISAKA and Accelerator, all feels so organic and terryfing. The phasing of the scene is really well done; the complete silence before MISAKA starts to bleed out, Accelerator's acknowledge of the fact that he killed someone, even if his logic of what is said to him about the sisters being just clones tries to supress what he feels (And the co-relation of why he seeks power as a way to have the ability to not fight anyone, to not hurt anyone, to not kill anyone due to how he grew up by fearing and hating his own existence) all of it really feels full of dispair. And of course the desolating words that MISAKA says here while she faces death for the first time laying on the blood that slowly grows around her, drowning her; like if she was in being swallowed by a sea of blood: "Oh. It's dark... It feels like I'm sinking into deep waters... Is this... Death?"
Finally, someone who actually remembers that the scientist invented and carried this entire experiment. People act as if Accelerator was to invent the Level 6 Shift Project, and completely forget about the scientists who continued to develop the clone, then send them to be slaughtered. The scientist's were the ones who wanted the Misaka's to die, Accelerator was like the gun used to do it (albeit an insane gun but still)
Accelerator Yes the scientist brainwashed the Imoutos into thinking that they were disposable and made them seem emotionless and then they convince Accelerator that they have not human emotions. It's even stated that he'd stop if they didn't want to continue. People direct their hate on Accelerator because they see him as the one directly killing them. But they ignore the fact that he doesn't fully realize that they have feelings at this point. He's actually an amazing character since he's now devoted to protecting them.
Eveta Jones It is because Accelerator isn't an idiot.... He should of known even if they were clones devoid of emotion, that they were still "alive" so to speak. They weren't robots, he could of stopped even if they wanted to continue, he was strong enough to do so. So yes, he should receive a great deal of the hatred and responsibility that comes with killing the sisters. It is okay to be a fan of Accelerator, but you shouldn't downplay his part at all.
RashawnBlue1 I'm not saying he's not at all at fault. He could have questioned the scientists more at least or. However the Misaka Imoutos WILLINGLY consented in this. He didn't see the cute times when they did show signs of feelings around Mikoto and Touma (like naming the cat 'dog' and laughing ect) When he encountered them they were like " Please go to desenated area, experement starts in 3 minutes and 26 secounds, Misaka says" He tried to scare them out of it, as he thought that if they had feelings they'd beg him to stop, which he was deep down hoping for. It wasn't like he was killing them as they begged for their lives. I think they are also at fault for throwing their lives away like trash, despite how much they loved life and how much their deaths were hurting Mikoto. But yes, Accelerator wasn't completley innocent in this. But he has devoted his entire existance to protecting their lives and hapiness. He feels so much guilt that he has even had a mental break down because of it. He willingly took a bullet to the head almost dieng, just so that the Imoutos could continue to live happily. He's saved them multiple times in the LN and takes care of two of them (LO and Worst). What more could you ask from him? He's doing everything possible to atone and to ensure their well being. He is just as much of a kind person as Touma and Mikoto. (who would have probably have ended up like him too if they went through what he did)
Eveta Jones There is nothing one can do to atone for that many lives being lost. It is not on this video (or maybe comment), but I did say I like Accelerator because of his acknowledgement of his part that he does not try to diminish it. Also you blaming the clones for it (even partly) is weird. That was completely within his realm to control. If he didn't want to do it, then he could of easily said no. There is no throwing responsibility around (exception of the scientists). You, however, are trying to get people to understand as if they should sympathize with him. I disagree fully with this, as it allows sympathy for Nazis for example.
Seeing Misaka 00001 die has got to be one of the saddest things in the anime series. If I were Accelerator that first battle would have severely damaged me, but death isn't anything new to him at this point so I'm not surprised he brushed it aside.
After watching accelerator season 1. Coming back to watch this makes sense. He didn’t even think of killing her, he didn’t even want to do it. Look at his face very carefully after she dies. Now he has ptsd.😔
Video uploaded 11 years ago. Watching it made me realize how much I miss old anime. This short vid, which combines humor and sadness in an amazing way, makes my heart ache. Sigh...
1:26 They made that scientist look like the "twin brother" of that unnamed gold-tooth doctor from Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood; the one that created Fuehrer King Bradley
Everybody talking about how he pwned her or how Accelerator developped or how the Sisters developped... And I'm just sitting here, getting a hit on my heart when MISAKA 1 discovers what death feels like...Geez... Accelerator didn't just kill many Sisters. He killed the same person again and again. And all Sisters still alive know what death feels like...because "they experienced" it so many times.
I don't know what is going on, as I don't know the anime, but that accelerator seemed shocked with Misaka's death, am I the only one to notice or am I imagining it.
+I like batman I think it wasn't so much that he became more ruthless, but more or less de-sensitized to the killing of the Misakas. I believe its misaka 20,001 that explained he really didn't want to kill them, but he did it because it would make him stronger.
ExileOfSand Meh, I'm not going to bash your personal opinion but he seems to be a pretty ruthless killing machine when we first see him and when he meets last order she mellows him out. I think that he has changed but he was a cold-blooded killer at first, probably due to his upbringing, but a cold-blooded killer nonetheless.
+I like batman No. +ExileOfSand is right. They explain it a little better in Index Volume 5. Basically he started killing the clones to get stronger and eventually got so used to it that he was completely de-sensitized. After a while, he got so bored with the repetitiveness that he actually tried to have conversations with the Misaka's before battle. Little Misaka brings this up to him saying that if he really didn't feel sympathy for the sisters, then he wouldn't have even bothered trying to interact with them in the first place.
There has to be some symbolism in his shirts. This scene he's wearing a "balance" of black & white with the black most apparent, meaning he's tainted by darkness yet still holds onto what's right. In Sisters Arc, he's wearing overpowering Black with streaks of white, meaning he's being consumed by darkness(murdering clones) with little white/purity shining through. Finally, he wears a Grey & White stripped shirt which could mean that he's true colors are apparent but he has not completely shed off his darkness. Now I could be wrong and maybe the animators just designed him like that, but I just thought it was interesting.
well, if you put in therms of symbolism here's something for you: In the Light novel series, Accelerator goes in Russia with L.O. and you can see him wearing a full white clothes. Also his Black-Wings (you can see them in the episode 22 of Toaru Majutsu no Index II) becomes white somehow.
Yer I got that observation too. Although I always just somehow thought he changed his Black Shirt to White 'Long' shirt cause his arms would get hurt if he had no sleeves. lol (jokes) Yer that does seem very apparent to be the explanation, the series is not Higurashi or Evangelion when it comes to Symbolism, but to create a story based around Magic (Christianity) vs Espiers (Science) there must defiantly has to be Symbolism of some form.
For me this is the most saddest Accelerator scene, it's because this is where Accelerator's insane charade begins and later on made him cruel and also insane
I like how that scientist feels safe enough to say he won't let Accelerator out if he doesn't kill her. From what I saw in the anime, Accelerator could have easily destroyed the door if not just made his own exit.
He didn't have a chance to put up a protest before Misaka 1 followed her orders. Seeing the fact that she and all the other sisters seemed to not even have a will to live and the scientist telling him that they were drugs and protein led him to believe that they were just dolls. He was sadistic towards them because deep down he wanted discourage them from continuing. Last order even stated that . Once he realized his wrong actions he felt a great deal of remorse for it and changed
Honestly I started the anime back in the days only because of a friend telling me that he started this anime because a friend of his that told him that there was a guy named accelerator that was so badass and stuff, honestly FeelsGoodMan to have friends
@Blue You seriously don't understand Accelerator, as I thought. The story clearly tells you three things about Accelerator in the sisters project, 1. he didn't actually want to kill all of those clones as Last Order herself explained and 2. in order to do so he had to convince himself those clones actually weren't people, and 3. he was convinced that if he did this nobody would ever challenge him so he wouldn't have to worry about hurting people anymore.
@Lævateinn But he didn't say any of that. He said he Accelerator was an asshole and that he didn't feel sorry for him because of it, not that he shouldn't be loved.
@Lævateinn I know what it means, but thats not what he implied. If he implies that Accelerator was written in a good way, what implies that he he thinks that he shouldn't be loved? He only said that Accelerator was an asshole as an antagonist, not a bad written character.
at first I read this as "escalator vs misaka" and so I clicked thinking this was gonna be a funny video of a girl trying to climb an escalator but somehow failing
@Sergej Walter, Actually Accel did have a choice , which is "kill the mastermind aka Kihara Gensei , but he is weak! (Touma even imply that in their fight about he had thought that Accel were forced to do Level 6 shift (wrong) and also you can see that Accel lost his way by killing more and more clones while convincing himself "lol that's just a doll" he even realize his mistake when fighting Touma while getting punch in his face he said " WTF am I doing?, In the flashback we saw the first day when Accel power awakened, he was just a child and suddenly he become the greatest threat for humanity(science side) he always getting jump by fools and used in experiment ! at the end of Index II we saw him change a great deal , he is someone who understand how precious life is ! it's easy to take it (Misaka Clone n.1) but super hard to protect one ( Last Order) and it came with a prize(brain damage and 10031 Clones ) Accel just want a friend if only he was like Sugita Gunha , they would become Bro instantly!!
I think I said this before a few months ago but I'll say it agin. I cried so hard and moths later I still cry over this because I watched the entire anime before this moment and nothing as horrible as this ever happened.
Man... You can tell Accel was a decent dude before the experiments. he was just looking forward to a good sparring match with someone his level. Instead he got completely hoodwinked and almost tricked into iilling someone.
this is the saddest sister death. Completely unintentional by accelerator, a feeling that no other sister had ever experienced. she went into it alone, afraid, and sad. also i just want to say it seems like accelerator beats 1 clone a day at most. it would take him 55 years to get to level 6 at that rate.
The cruelty of those scientists bastards shows how much their experiments mean more to them than ethics. Also a fellow mercenary I once called comrade said something similar that misaka 1 said when he perished. Gives me flashbacks every time I see it and tears
I also have a feeling that Accelerator knows about the plan to a certain degree seeing as he is at its center. There's always the possibility that he knew he would just cause more suffering if he had refused. He resolved himself to become Aliester's sacrifice so that, for example, Kakine wouldn't have to do it in his stead...nor would he be allowed such power. No one would have been helped had he run away, and I think that makes him even more of a hero.
What I feel like a lot of people forget or ignore about this scene is that once she went down the first time, Accelerator was willing to leave her alive.
Finally Spoilers
He gets a coat that is pretty much all white.

Am I the only one who kinda prefers Accelerator with silver hair instead of white? (I know it's just the lighting but still).
His hair lacks any pigment due to the very nature of his power, so it defaults to white. That being said, I do think it looks a bit better as a platinum blonde.

Interesting how All the Level 5's have there own Metal issues:
#1) Can't really tell the difference between right and wrong
#2) God Complex, hates the thought of someone stronger
#3) Her powers linked to her emotions, which she can barely control
#4) Perfectionist, that can't stand the thought of failure
#5) Paranoid, and Control obsessed
#6) ???
#7) Delusional, honestly thinks he is a super hero
Any human is susceptible to such delusions - just google what happens to people, who unexpectantly get a position of power. Most charismatic leaders show such issues too.
Unless #6 ends up being the T-1000 from Terminator, I think they have mental issues, not so much metal issues mate.
deektedrgg I would pay lots of money for this.
technically 1) its not true, he knows he is doing bad things, and he knew that he should give up defending himself because he was killing everyone with his power as a child
Armando92
Come to think about it, the Accelerator that we all enjoy, making crazy faces, taunting people and using his powers creatively was pretty much created through the clone fights.
And of course the desolating words that MISAKA says here while she faces death for the first time laying on the blood that slowly grows around her, drowning her; like if she was in being swallowed by a sea of blood:
"Oh. It's dark... It feels like I'm sinking into deep waters... Is this... Death?"
If only she didn't pull the trigger... if only she wasn't brainwashed. Danm those scientists.
Eveta Jones
It is because Accelerator isn't an idiot....
(who would have probably have ended up like him too if they went through what he did)
Eveta Jones
There is nothing one can do to atone for that many lives being lost.

I don't know what is going on, as I don't know the anime, but that accelerator seemed shocked with Misaka's death, am I the only one to notice or am I imagining it.
Was his first out of thousands
+Lucifer Con Yeah he get's much more ruthless later on.
Are you my English class?
well, if you put in therms of symbolism here's something for you:
In the Light novel series, Accelerator goes in Russia with L.O. and you can see him wearing a full white clothes.
Dan Is Just Dan the design of his cloth come from ultrman as I head
Dan Is Just Dan Or maybe he favors a particular shirt brand.

In the manga... he DOES destroy the door lol. But the scientists tell him to stop, and he ends up getting shot at before he can leave either way.
You get feels instantly if you played Nier: Automata...

The entire part of Scientific Railgun: S is just Misaka having an identity crisis.
I know she's Misaka's Clone... But even she's a clone she has the face of Good and innocent Misaka... Even a clone deserves to live
Yeah... Poor her...

All the “clones” were real people that looked like her

No people?
What a hell to went through, i feel bad for accelarator.
@Blue No, he's not. You just don't understand Accelerator character.
@Lævateinn Thats what he said isn't? He was an asshole, but he changed.

御坂クローン死んだのってアクセラレーターに当たったのそのまま跳ね返ってきたからだよね、、、しかもアクセラレーターが「処理?活動停止?」って呟いていたあたり、殺すのを少し拒んでたような感じ。
The cruelty of those scientists bastards shows how much their experiments mean more to them than ethics. Also a fellow mercenary I once called comrade said something similar that misaka 1 said when he perished. Gives me flashbacks every time I see it and tears
Resident evil everyone?
+Wee Yew Ong me
I also have a feeling that Accelerator knows about the plan to a certain degree seeing as he is at its center.
初めて外に出た時もそうだったけど、死の表現も詩的に表現するんだな…
I feel sad seeing this. He was actually happy to fight a level 5 for the first time only to be disappointed.
