I think that I accidentally moved that speed of disk screw thingy. I think it's good advice to measure the default resistance value of the potentionmeter before partaking in this or any procedure involving the removal or moval of the ribbon cable. After, fix one should always remeasure the the resitance value to make sure it is set back to default that is when it is already reinstalled back into the system already for best accuracy (since the slightest of movements effects a slight drop or increase in the default resistance value over a period of repetitive play of the ribbon cable). This prevents laser from failure, which mine sadly did. I have to replace it now.
Nice vid, I submerged the ps1 laser in Isopropyl alcohol for 5 minutes, and let it dry for 2 days at leats. Works like a charm now! Also with ps2 laser, no issues after
I still have a PS1 my parents bought for me and brother back in 1997. Haven't switched it on proper for well over 15 years due to the laser not reading discs properly. It would read them ok tipping it on its side or upside down. So it sounds like it could need greasing is my guess (no doubt it will after all this time), I remember it was louder than the newer chipped PS1 we got a few years after.
If it's a laser from a 1000 series PlayStation like a KSM-440AAM or KSM-440ABM you'll need to replace the Laser as those Lasers have a design flaw where the sled rail's wear away due to them being plastic. one of the signs of this is having to turn the PlayStation on it's side or upside down to read disc's
that is a great question! I have heard that those chinese lasers/optical pickups you buy off amazon ebay or alliexpress come hardly prepared, so you still need to do some work on them before installing them to work properly, like greasing them, even adjusting the pot... or at least that's what I've heard
Great work. I didn't know how many parts needed to remove. Futaba Servo Gear Grease. I'll look for that. Thanks ! Been taking apart a cheepo DVD player, and it needs belt and grease.
Thanks bwack, It's my go to grease for lubricating Laser \ Optical pickups like this. If you can't find Futaba Servo Gear Grease you can use Tamiya Ceramic Grease which I've used before. You should find both of them on eBay or if there's a good RC model shop near you, you may find them there.
Does it load and play FMV fine, if it does its probably the mod chip injecting the boot code to trick the playstation into booting and I wouldn't worry about it.
Thanks for this great video, could bring my old PS from the dead. Same incident with the small wire happened to me, but I was not so fortunate, mine went out into oblivion and never found. If anyone suffered the same, I could replace it with a piece of guitar string (high b string in a set of 10s).
I'm laughing because I regreased 3 or 4 optical pickups that I have and I went overboard with white lithium grease xD.... reeaaaaaaally really wanted to make sure that bastard moves without issues 😂😂, great video lad!
I appreciate this video and it will be more important over time but right now replacement laser assemblies are so cheap it's hardly worth actually doing this. If your time isn't worth much or you just enjoy fixing things or you simply want to reduce waste this is great though. Something I would do as well.
2:01 I love how you replicated the noise exactly haha
Ha, ya.

Quick question, when you order a new laser, do you fit it with lithium grease right away or do you leave the new assembly be at first?

Thanks. Ordered it from ebay, UK. Reasonable postage. Hard to find over counter in Norway, I think..

No, they would try to send the boot code at the same time unless you made a switch were you could dissable one or the other chip.
Thanks. will get there. just need to keep going.
Great job mate, I will have to get some of that gear grease.

my ps1 scph-5502 only plays backup games (FMVs) when in a 45° angle. what can i do ? is it the spindle motor?

Thumbs up! Posted a link to your vid =D
Awesome, Thanks for that.
I feel like you could get away with fixing this problem without stripping it down this far.
Though this method is more thorough.
Pointless video if you dont show the sound before and after. Might as well not make it.
He did. Check the ending.
