To be 100% correct, here it is in a nutshell: Robert Gardos was born on January 16, 1979, in Budapest, Hungary. He began playing table tennis at his hometown club, Budapesti VSC, where his father, Gábor Gardos, was a coach. In 1993, Gardos won the European Youth Championship in singles and mixed doubles with Mihaela Encea in the cadet category. At 14, he moved to Austria but continued competing for Hungary until he was 18. In 1998, after a conflict with the Hungarian national team, he began competing for Austria. So he is originally from Hungary and living in Spain.
