“Jungfrau Maleen” (“Maid Maleen”) is a fairy tale from the Brothers Grimm collection. Like “Rapunzel” and “The Pink,” this story involves a noblewoman’s imprisonment in a tower.
Maid Maleen was a princess who fell in love with a prince from another kingdom. When her father, the king, learned of the couple’s love, he punished Maid Maleen by locking her and her maidservant, along with seven years’ worth of food, in the pitch-black confines of a tower sealed off from the light of the sun and moon.
Seven years later, Maid Maleen managed to escape from the tower, only to find that the world outside had been completely transformed by war...
Together with her maidservant, Maid Maleen wandered the land. The prince, who had since been betrothed to another princess, could not forget Maid Maleen... Not knowing whether or not the other was still alive, the two nonetheless thought of each other constantly.
Maid Maleen found work as a servant at a castle, where she was asked to stand in for the bride at the wedding of a prince and his betrothed. As fate would have it, the prince who lived at that castle was none other than the prince with whom Maid Maleen was in love. Maid Maleen hid her true identity, and the prince, unable to believe that the bride he saw before him could truly be Maid Maleen, carried on with the wedding.
That night, having finished acting as a stand-in for the bride, Maid Maleen went back to work as a servant. However, instead of giving it to the real bride, Maid Maleen continued to wear the golden necklace that the prince had given her during the ceremony.
Upon seeing that his bride was not wearing the necklace, the prince realized that this was not the bride from the wedding. He set off to search the castle, and among the young women working as servants, he found Maid Maleen wearing the necklace. The two were miraculously reunited, and they lived happily ever after.
