Thank very much Ray. I did as as you said. Cold start. Warm up 10 minutes, drive 5 mile in the city then freeway. And sure enough the OBD was ready and I passed the smog for my 2010 town & country. So happy.
The comment about the car's computer constantly considering the drive cycle incomplete and never tripping a light because it "doesn't want to fail" is very helpful for those of us trying to understand why a car can be stuck on "cat monitor pending" for 6+ weeks. Thanks.
This was a great explanation video. I am a fellow L1 master tech and am going to recommend your video to my customers who don't understand what we sometimes have to go through for that 'silly little light that's on again'.
Thank you for explaining the concept of 'drive modes' for a particular model car. I always wondered why my diagnostic test says NOT READY for EVAP and CATALYST....I need to make my car go through a drive mode or drive cycle. I drive my car a lot but not on the highway and I never let it idle--now I know why the monitor is not triggered.... THANK YOU
Dam Ray..Jolly good show dude..Thanks!! I just flunked my emission because they said after I had work done at a car shop, my OBD monitors had to be reset by driving. I have a 2013 Hyundai Elantra. I did like you said at the end of your vid presentation and it worked. I let it idle for a good 15 min with nothing on then took her out on the interstate at about 55 to 60 for 20 miles and the next day I passed. All monitors reset. I appreciate it. Was going to take it to a dealer. But I found your video instead.
mike johnson what kind of work did you get done on your car that had the obd failure ? I have a Porsche and had a clutch done a while back ,an oil air separator but nothing electrical cause at smog station I was asked if I had changed the battery? I’ve owned the car for a couple of years and never messed with batterie ..I did changed the convertible top but don’t think the shop had to disconnect the battery in order to replace the top 🤔
keep in mind that obd scanner cannot detect newer model cars because Auto industries installed proprietory codes and datas because of avoidances to manipulate odometers.Thats why its really hard to scan correct datas of new model vehicles.
Thanks and appreciated for the video..Hi I have a 2006 mdx that won't pass emission through obdll test. I have one more chance to make it pass. Can you help me out please. This is the last year that Seattle residents have to have an emission test done on their vehicles. Any information will help out. Again please me out... Thanks advanced

Im in desperate need of help.! I cannot for the life of me get my EVAP monitor to set on my 1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS and i dont know where to find the drive mode or drive cycle. All the other monitors have set and this last one is keeping me from being able to get an emissions test done so i can register my car. Please help.!
How can I find the drive cycle is completed before I go to the smog check test? Can a OBD 2 testers do that? I went to a parts store where the free test was offered and they told me everything working(so I don't need any parts they sell), so i went to the smog test but it still failed by "not ready" in catalytic converter. I want to make sure it'll pass the next time.
allgoo19 hello there ..did it pass ? I’m here in Los Angeles and my Porsche didn’t pass cause it wasn’t “ ready “? The previous owner never told me if he changed the battery on car ..I was told to drive it through a cycle ? And it should set up and be ready ? I don’t drive the car much or on freeways cause I don’t work too far from home
Can you tell me what book you were showing? I'm not able to get the CAT and EVAP monitors set to "ready" on my 2001 Toyota Rav4, after I changed the car battery. Should I reset these two monitors with my Actron Auto Scanner? Thanks!
The book was actually for a 2002 Mazda MPV Minivan so the drive cycles will be different. If you were to reset the monitors with your scan tool you would be starting over from square one. You may want to contact Toyota or acquire the specific drive mode for your vehicle and ensure that it is being performed properly. Evap monitors sometimes have "cold soak" periods whereas the vehicle must sit for 7+ hours at 70 degrees F or less in order to set as complete so they can be difficult to accomplish. If the modes are being completed properly and you still are not setting the monitor, I would suspect a partially deteriorated catalytic converter on the Toyota Rav4.
Would you know what the drive cycle for a 2010 e350 mercedes would be? I had a check engine light for a purge valve. Im going to replace the valve, remove the battery to clear engine light. I think I have to drive it for 200 miles? Not sure..Can you help? Thx
DZEyoyo123 Its difficult to say without seeing it, but most forward facing lights are grounds for failure unless they are aimed, working, and wired to not come on at the same time as your regular headlights. Good luck!
I went to take an emissions test and I failed due to monitors on my drive cycle saying "not ready". I needed a tune-up and that's why it was doing that. Well I have a machine that I can test all this on and all week all my monitors have been saying "ready". Well this morning I go to run another test just to ensure I'm going to pass inspection this morning and now all of my monitors are saying "ready"except for my cat. Now I know you're allowed one monitor to say "not ready". however my question is can my cat say "not ready" as long as my other ones are saying "ready" and will I pass that way??? Also why after repairing the car and all my monitors have said "ready" for a week but now on the day I am going to inspection now everything is saying "ready" expect for the cat??? It makes no sense.
I'm soooo stressed out over my new used car... everything passed but the emmison test... 2012 Hyundai sonata btw. anyway I drove over 100 miles it still failed!!! why how much more should I drive?
Could a failed fuel gauge affect my im data? Its not throwing any codes but its been stuck on empty for a few months. Ive been using the trip mileage to gauge it.
No, unless your Tank fuel level is actually low the FUEL monitor will not run unless the tank is full, other than that your car should not fail a Smog Inspection test in California, i am not sure in other states because they have different Inspection procedures.
Hey Ray..so after doing 3 tests yesterday, the 06 rx8 still won't pass inspection. We did the crazy drive cycle to get the Evap, and Seconday to check ready, after 145 mi... still NOPE! Whatapaininthebutt. I tried to find your website, it said I could buy your domain? lol. and no luck on FB either, My end perhaps? any ideas?
@@DeplorableBillyGunner I'm sitting on an airplane right now or I'd look it up but I'm pretty sure both of those require a cold soak below 70 degrees F. I have that exact same problem! took my battery off and it reset my computer I driven my car now for a like a week on the highway and now the only thing that can't seem to get ready on my Im monitor is my catalytic converter..
Here in Virginia, no. While a handheld scanner can be used to check monitor status and retrieve codes there is a specific stationary testing machine at each inspection station that connects to the vehicle and retrieves DTCs and monitor status. This machine is also linked to the DEQ and DMV and will instruct the inspector on how to perform the test for the vehicle being testing, save the test information, and transmit it electronically to the DEQ and DMV.
It's just stupid. There's no reason to do such an extensive "drive cycle". Warm up the car, perform a 10 mile drive. That's all it should need. I have this issue with my car that I store in the winter. After hooking up the battery in the spring I get a 10 days from the new york dmv to get the car inspected. I only put 1000-2000 miles on it a year. Ford has the most complicated drive cycle procedure. It sucks. Funny how a new car car drive right off the lot without a "drive cycle". It's complete bs.
California Laws do not apply here.!996 to 1999 any one monitor is ok if not set2000 and up.Only .the Evap monitor is allowed to be incomplete. Good video anyways.
