    I never hate watch these bad shows. I’ve never seen Velma. I’ve never seen rings of power. I’ve never seen madame web. @@tamarleahh.2150I made it to the penultimate episode and the storytelling is garbage, the visuals don't save it because lotr is about the characters not the settings. And Galadriel wasn't true to her character. Plot lines didn't make sense and omg was it boring. I gave up after the volcano. HotD had representation and more cohesive storytelling, and while I haven't forgiven George for not finishing the books or D&D for seasons 7 and 8, I can recommend HotD. I recommend RoP to only my worst enemies, sadly those are the ones pushing this ideology.

      @@jenn9027 you say Galadriel wasn't true to her character but my point is exactly to disregard what you are supposed to know about her. The Galadriel of the show is a different Galadriel. The character itself does have an arc:
      Starting out on a quest to avenge her brother's murder, earning glory but being so obsessed and insecure about her mission that she won't give up and find peace, making tons of mistakes and alienating everyone around her with her selfish obsession and then ultimately paying with the consequence of her rearming the one she swore to destroy. If it weren't for her arrogance and selfishness she would have been able to focus on the real enemy instead of essentially becoming a villain herself. She's asked why she doesn't stop and admits that she doesn't know how. What lies beneath this is her unwillingness to accept the death of her brother and move on with life.
      It's not the Galadriel of lotr but it is an interesting exploration into character.

    The thing I hate the most is the gaslighting regarding this so-called toxic fanbase. This is a thing KK and others made up. The whole toxic fanbase thing is just a victim ideology invention to keep her (A wealthy millionaire) looking good among her own crowd. No woman was ever unwelcome in star wars until KK declared it and kept using that line (talk about repeating the lie until everyone believes it). The female audience of geek stuff was always small, but they have now all walked away with the men. Hollywood doesn't want to tell stories, they want to tell identity and victimhood, and sadly, I don't see it stopping anytime soon. As a woman, I'm not into it, and I refuse to watch it.

It was definitely right to destroy it when he did, the Death Star needed to be stopped, but I have to imagine Luke spared at least some thought and mourning after the war for the fact that he had to indiscriminately kill so many people instead of getting the chance to save those who were pressed into service, after all he is the same kid who tried to save Vader. @@kxbrewskythe Clerks conversation was about the second Death Star, which was still under construction; IIRC Randall grants that the first Death Star (the one destroyed by Anak--Luke) was destroyed in an act of was and manned by enemy combatants. Saying that the destruction of the first Death Star, a superweapon used to kill billions of people in a single strike, is "morally gray" is either evidence that this person is an idiot, or that he/she watched Clerks a few years ago, doesn't totally remember the conversation but is trying to sound smart.

      @kxbrewsky 3 месяца назад +3

      @@wyssmaster That's fair, it has been a while since I've seen it, and I will admit to being at least partially an idiot, but I more so mean that Randal helped to open up conversations about the morality of some things in Star Wars that had previously been taken for granted. I didn't mean that we've all been repeating that exact same conversation for 30 years. Randal does grant the first Death Star, but I'd say he may have been quick to do so. He is essentially saying that since everyone on DS1 was an Imperial that means they are all evil, which is an easy assumption to make, but probably not actually the case. We do know of at least one cantina from the Death Star novel, the Hard Heart, which was run by a Twi'lek after her bar on Coruscant suspiciously burned down, and while she and her people did escape after learning the DS was in fact a planet killer, not just a mobile base, we don't know how many other services were strong armed into taking positions on the ship and didn't have a chance to escape. Ignoring them, we can't even say that all the imps were completely evil. We know for a fact that the Empire conscripted a lot children from conquered planets into the military then indoctrinated and straight up brainwashed them to be good little soldiers and killed anyone they deemed untrainable. I'm not saying that Luke shouldn't have taken the shot, and I don't think anyone is saying that. The Death Star needed to be destroyed, but I do think it's at least a little gray to kill, potentially, hundreds of thousands of slave soldiers who literally never had another choice except for death. I imagine, since he was a good person, after the war Luke probably felt some regret or mourning or some kinda way for having to indiscriminately end so many lives instead being able to save those who were pressed into service. He even tried to save Vader in the end, so I always assumed he didn't think in simple black and white.

I just don't think Luke sees everything so black and white; he probably did think about the cantina workers.
      Also it's unclear as to how many people on the Death Star knew of its full capabilities before it was actually fired, and once it was used on Alderaan it was destroyed within 24 hours, before it could recharge and be used again. So anyone who abruptly learned that they were on a planet killer and suddenly didn't want to be their anymore probably didn't have time to escape. And before you say "but it was called the Death Star, how could they not know", it really does fit with a naming scheme along side the Star Destroyer, which, we all know, could not, in fact, destroy stars.

      @@kxbrewsky Fair and well reasoned points. Most soldiers regret the lives they took. Jedi certainly do as well.
      The problem is when people try to act like there is somehow equivalency in Luke’s case. Even if there were some people on the death star that arguably didn’t deserve to die, there is simply no way to justify leaving the death star intact. What triggers so many people is when the creators of Star Wars content are so out of touch and so full of themselves that they insist on things that just don’t work. Their morality and view of the world is so twisted, allowing them to justify search rotten things as insulting their own fans or dismissing the value of George Lucas, that we are sick and tired of nearly everything they say. The Jedi being "corrupt" in some form is an idea that I think Star Wars really needs to address, given it is embedded into the very core of the narrative, but almost no-one is willing to actually do so honestly. There is a difference between nuance and contrarianism, and most people either die on the hill that the Jedi were always the "good guys" or they'd rather die than admit they were ever good at all. The entire prequel trilogy, which itself is the foundation for the entire star wars series narratively, was trying to convey the idea of a flawed Jedi order.
    It was showing that the Jedi are basically Spartans from Halo; children taken from an extremely young age, psychologically conditioned to believe and think the way that they 'should', and trained as warriors. The Jedi order very explicitly was restrictive and, while noble in intention, was always supposed to be flawed and morally dubious at times. The Sith mirrored the morally dubious execution, but flipped the noble intentions on their head. The Jedi were essentially driven by stoic ideals, but faced the issue that it's hard to induce stoicism in people which lead to cases like Anakin where Palpatine, through pretending to be a supportive father-like figure, was able to coerce him. In other words they were defined by legitimately virtuous stoic ideals, but always walked the line between stoicism and repression. When you try to impose the idea of virtuous self sacrifice onto others, is it really "self" sacrifice, or is it you sacrificing on their behalf? The original trilogy was about rediscovering the Jedi order and bringing back the righteous peace keepers of ages past, and the prequel trilogy was about investigating the flaws in the allegedly flawless Jedi order which made it fall in the first place. However, the prequels also kinda sucked and the original trilogy didn't, so you got split fanbase of people who either A : forgot the prequels entirely and see the Jedi as pure-good against the pure-evil Sith, or B : leaned too far into the prequels entirely and forgot that the Jedi were still stupposed to be good overall. It would be like if a bridge collapsed due to structural failures, and then half of the population remained convinced that it was still perfectly sturdy and standing and the other half of the population remained convinced it never stood in the first place. Now those two sets of people have to work together to build a new bridge believing both that the old flawed design is perfect and still standing, *_and_* that it was so horrible it never worked in the first place. You're never going to get a good bridge from these people working together because they're *_both_* wrong and neither understand the dynamics at play.
    George Lucas for his, admittedly significant flaws when it came to understanding some things, was willing to approach topics with nuance. However, now that it's , "nuance" is being conflated with simple contrarianism and that false equivalency is being abused by people to tell the story they want to tell, even if it doesn't actually make any sense.

      Well said. The Jedi were never corrupt. They were always "the good guys."
      Maybe they failed to change with the times, or simply failed to recognize that the times were changing and they were being manipulated, but that doesn't even mean that they were wrong. Just short sighted, and "flawed" does not mean "evil." If there's one thing that George got right about the prequels, it's the larger themes and subtle nuanced concepts at play. Unfortunately, the writing, dialog, character work, and storytelling were so bad that everyone assumed that there was nothing to discuss about them (maybe rightly so). A lot of those themes and nuances just fade into the background.

    • @gregowen2022
      @gregowen2022  3 месяца назад +5

      Yes! This subtle line is so hard to walk for many writers who want to bludgeon their audience one way or another. Another story that does this well is (shocking) Wheel of Time with its White Tower of female magic users. They divide themselves into seven colored groups, but there is an eighth group, a black group that works for The Dark One. No one in the tower will acknowledge that the black group exists and deals harshly with anyone who suggests it. Their belief that it is IMPOSSIBLE for one of them to turn to the dark is exactly what allows so many black sisters to exist. Their rigid rules are exactly what he enemy uses to turn many of them. It’s such a cool idea to explore how being too rigid makes you brittle, but being too flexible might be corrupting in its own way, like you allow too much bad to happen in the name of being flexible.
      Instead, Headland went with “Jedi corrupt cops”. Sigh, we’re doomed.

      @Locksden 3 месяца назад

      @@gregowen2022 OFC there's room for an "Eddard Stark"(inflexible "Lawful Good") view of the Jedi. But corruption?
      Corruption implies a change of state or fundamental nature, not the disadvantages of a steady state.
      Star Wars *needs* "Good vs Evil". Corruption of Good _must_ lead inevitably to the Dark Side. The "grey area" is occupied by the likes of Han Solo. And there's room in Star Wars for "grey area to Good/Bad" stories & "no Jedi, no Sith" stories).
      OFC The Acolyte can't do this. As per your explanation of its true themes, The Acolyte is not a Star Wars story.
      They wanted "Big" characters, but _not_ the Star Wars versions (Jedi and Sith), because they don't work in a story about moral relativism (plus some incidental repression of their modern enemies /lol).
      So "old-school" Star Wars fans "forced them" to corrupt Star Wars in order to "do the right thing for humanity" :)
      The Acolyte will certainly contribute to the good of humanity. But not in the way its creators intend.

    • @NameNotAChannel
      @NameNotAChannel 3 месяца назад

      I wouldn't go so far as to say they were corrupt.
      I would say that having built their temple on Coruscant atop an ancient Sith site allowed the emperor to cloud their otherwise strong connection to the force and their ability to sense its will. Since the point of the Jedi was to carry out the will of the force, maintaining balance (no, not equal dark and light... GL said the dark was always imbalance, and bringing balance to the force was destroying the sith. The light side is Always balanced on its own.).
      Over the years, perhaps due to prophesies and visions, they became overly strict and overly cautious in regards to their rules and regulations. They allowed fear of Jedi students turning to the dark side, to influence their decisions. They decided that they had to start training new Jedi at an age early enough that they never formed "attachments" that they would fear losing. They limited relationships that Jedi were allowed to have. There was no evil or corrupt intention here, just way too much caution and fear.
      In practice, the Jedi order is not evil. It's not great, but it's not evil. By the time of the movies, they had become respected as peace keepers, but not cops. They were held in so high regard and were so skilled, that they were asked to do things by the Republic's leadership. This inherently lead to involvement in politics... and since they couldn't really see or feel clearly what the will of the force was, they defaulted to keeping peace, assuming maintaining peace in the republic is what the force would want them to do. They allowed themselves to become tools of the political entities... and the emperor had been weaseling his way into control of the political powers, and by proxy, the Jedi themselves.
      The final manipulation of creating the war with the separatists, turning the Jedi into generals in a war, and usurping the power of the entire republic sealed the emperor's victory over the old Jedi order as they knew it, culminating in Order66.
      It seems Jedi that spent more time off Coruscant, like Qui Gon, had a closer relationship with the will of the force, and his actions against the will of the Jedi Council was more in line with following the will of the force, as a proper Jedi should have done.
