I had no idea that this even took place until 5 minutes ago! We most certainly have come a long way but we still have much further to go
This is my childhood. We sang this song so many times in music class in Washington, DC. We sang the star spangled banner and this. It was the norm so I'm surprised to find that younger folks don't know about it. Not only did we sing it we had to know why and you learned the true history of America. The song just gives you hope of the possibilities. But alas people would rather sing the National anthem with it's demoralizing connotation. Imagine always having to create something separate because you are not wanted or celebrated in the mainstream. They also make sure you know it was written by a black person so that even if you like the song you may reject it just cause.
My favorite stanza: God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, Thou who hast brought us thus far on the way; Thou who hast by Thy might, Led us into the light, Keep us forever in the path, we pray. Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee, Lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee; Shadowed beneath Thy hand, May we forever stand, True to our God, True to our native land.

This song doesn't cause divisiveness; it creates harmony and unity. The version by by Francis Scott Keyes and James Welfon Johnson were written in 20th century. It's appropriate for Black History Month; it educates those who aren't aware of this civil rights movement base and anthem from NAACP. Also, in this superbowl both quarterbacks are African American which is another first. Those who oppose it as an being woke is not understanding its origin or allowing another anthem/narrative to be told only the mainstream Caucasian version to be known. There is more than one cultural anthem but the narrative and representation is now being created in 21st century.

I don’t understand why people feel like she’s lip syncing, This is What She Does!!! That was beautifully done!!!
Because the Super Bowl started lip synching after the Christina fiasco I'm sure.
It doesn't matter, the NFL allows performers to lip sing.
@@javajive01 If an artist is lip syncing on any show/platform, then said platform has allowed it to happen.. but let's not forget that the artist has a choice to make. Sing it live or pretend to sing it.
There's audio compression in a post-mix. It's lip-synced.

Awesome performance. Beautifully done Sheryl Lee Ralph❤️
I'm a biracial man, part black, I would have took a knee on this one
And I'm mixed race and took a knee to Star Spangled Banner. That Anthem had racist lyrics in it that was stripped from it
@@i.am.the-one I don't see any latinos, whites or other nationalities signing along with her in this video. Not very inclusive like our National Anthem. Nice song I guess, but not inclusive for me to care about it. You guys can keep it! bring on the rockets red glare or Tragos de amargo licor!

It means glorification of insurrectionists against the british

Most of my people I doubt even realize that there is a black national anthem. This brought tears to my eyes to hear this being sung by this woman at the super bowl just now. It's just something about a low-voiced woman singing this song that does it for me! The best part of the entire night imo!

Wow, I didn’t know she had that powerful voice.
People know your history. She is a Broadway singer star!!

@@roter13 she was THE dream girl lol Deena Jones!

It must have been a DC thing because we sang it every morning, right after the Pledge of Allegiance and America (My Country Tis of Thee).
I also have to give recognition to that outstanding choir lending their vocal support to Mrs Sheryl Lee Ralph. They were absolutely amazing, too!
So true!
she openly admitted that she lip synched the whole thing

My favorite stanza:
God of our weary years,
God of our silent tears,
Thou who hast brought us thus far on the way;
Thou who hast by Thy might,
Led us into the light,
Keep us forever in the path, we pray.
Lest our feet stray from the places,
our God,
where we met Thee,
Lest our hearts,
drunk with the wine of the world,
we forget Thee;
Shadowed beneath Thy hand,
May we forever stand,
True to our God,
True to our native land.
Beautiful!! Thanks for sharing!!! I’ve never heard it before. I love the verse you just shared.
I remember when I was a kid back in the 1980s in the Bronx ;schools would do the National Anthem ,This song and then the Puerto Rican national anthem to make sure all students were represented.
I was never taught the Puerto Rican national anthem. I would love to hear it! ❤
I just looked it up. I love it!
So ...this is all well and good, but it's not our national anthem 🙄
how? this is simply paying homage to to black people, its not like they replaced the national anthem, this just goes along with it, whats the issue?
@@stilwells idk T, maybe it's just the tradition aspect. And so many great singers who have stepped up to the plate in the past. Who can possibly forget Whitney Houston with her rendition that absolutely sent chills. Change can be good when it's necessary, but it's also comforting to have tradition and familiarity.... peace 🕊️
It was everything ✨❤️ everyone truly unified in unity. #BlackExcellence
Who is everyone? It’s meant for a specific race. Were Asians and Mexicans unified by this song?
@@1pecrnet It may (or may not) have been written and centered about a specific race for some specific, very important reasons. But look at the words, look at where and how this is being performed. The whole idea here is progression for all, and we started with eliminating the worst atrocities for some, and it reminds us to continue to overcome them for all going forward.
I bet you feel a special bond when you see the gorilla unit at the gym.
@@1pecrnet I'm White, and I was. I love this song. Sorry you feel no unity with the message.

We need our own schools for that. Just teach them at home and sing it on Juneteenth or in defiance of 4th of July😂.

She’s a Legend one of the Original DreamGirls 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Are you AJ from 106 & Park??
There’s only one nation anthem
Who said there isn't tho? When has anyone said this was another national Anthem. The ignorance with yall...

Let us march on ’til victory is won

WHY IS IT CONSIDERED BLACK NATIONAL ANTHEM, BECAUSE BLACKS SINGING IT, 🤷🤷♀️😊😊😊
Cause it was written by a black man
The NAACP affectionately nicknamed it the "black national anthem" in 1919 due to its strong civil rights message.
