  • I can't beleive how good this engine is inside when the car body is such a piece of crap. Clearly the previous owners looked after maintenence religiously before the car body was left to deteriorate outside.

    That's amazing! That you can still see the honing marks on the cylinder walls after that many miles. Mercedes has proven that they can engineer a very durable engine.

  • @MMWA-DAVE
    @MMWA-DAVE  6 лет назад +11

    I looked back at the service records that came with this red car and found that the head was removed at 157,000km to fix oil leaking from the gasket. It’s never had any welding or repair work done, only cleaned and reinstalled. The engines outstanding internal condition can be attributed to the no nonsense no expense spared maintenance it experienced during the ww2 fighter pilots ownership for 10 of its years. After that maintenance and care with subsequent owners is undocumented and quite likely questionable at best. Not only is this guy a hero for his services but he’s also a hero for how well preserved the inside of this engine is, even though the owners after him didn’t take such good care.

      actually anyone who understands about engines will put a 2jz in a merc. 2jz block is superior in all ways compared to m104.
      even without taking any measurements you can see the weakness of m104 by just looking how thin the block is between the bores, that will crack in any serious hp applications.

    I'm about to restore my M104.980 Evo 1 as well. As a Mercedes apprentice, I am able to get all the repair manuals and tools required however, there's one question I'd really like to ask... How do I replace the timing chain whilst still having the crankshaft's TDC and camshafts' TDC remain aligned? Do I just mark it with a sharpie or is there a special tool or something? How would/did you do it?
    All we did in our work training so far was disassemble and re-assemble factory engines that were not even more than 3 years old, we did not replace any parts on those engines.

    • @MMWA-DAVE
      @MMWA-DAVE  4 года назад

      Its explained in the manual, when replacing the timing chain. I will have to have the cams in their designated positions (holes with pins in them) and the engine in tdc when I fit the head. The heads been refurbished so the cams are in random positions currently. I had to do this on my blue black cars engine too. It is critical that the intake cam position be understood correctly because if timed incorrectly it will result in bent valves. I would advise having a read of the cam timing adjustment process when replacing timing chain. I did not have the cams move on their own once the engine was in TDC and the cams in their correct position, though it was 6 years ago now I can barely remember. I will be installing the head on my rebuilt engine soon enough and will have to read up myself. I also have to crimp the new chain, I have the tool. I still have not purchased one of the timing chain guides or I would have installed the head already. (I also need the 3.2 gasket too since it is no longer 3 litres)

      Timothy Lam the owner that did the most kilometres was a fighter pilot in ww2 and spent rest of life as an airforce doctor. He serviced the car on time or early every time. The oil type on the receipts is nothing special, what is important is doing it regularly with a new filter. Changing cheap oil often is better in my opinion than leaving expensive oil in too long. Not that i use cheap oil i only use full synthetic.

      pretty sure it would be possible, crank and rods etc are all m103 part numbers - you would have to change the pistons though. m104 pistons have the cut outs in the top for the 4 valves, m104 engines are also higher compression than m103 - it may work as is with the m103 pistons but wouldnt be optimal.

      Confirmed. M103 3.0l and m104.980 are exactly alike. They got the exact same partsnumber and even the crank from 3.0l is the same. All you need to do is use a m104 headgasket to fit a m104 top on a m103 block 😊 and ofc use m104 pistons. In my case i'm running custom forged billet h-conrods and pistons to lower compression for big turbo boost 😇🤩

      Victor Dutra m104 factory orignal manuals are very hard to come by. The good news is most of the manuals for 90’s onwards cars were archived by MB into PDF. They are available in the workshop information system which is a companion to the EPC. (Parts catalog) being a bit computer savvy is required to set it up but last time i checked some people were still selling the (questionable legality) epc’s on a virtual machine image you just run on a recent, capable computer. My virtual machines are all running on macs so thats not a limitation either. The topic is too big to discuss here but there should be lots of information online as to how to get your hands on a working setup. Alternatively there was also a dvd set of manuals for the 124 from MB USA but in their market the m104.980 was only used in the 1990-92 300CE so takes some changing between models to find everything you need plus that software only runs on older computer setups now. I think the PDF’s from it are online too on a 124 specific forum. I can’t remember which.

    Mercedes intended that timing chain to last the life of the car, so be careful with it. I called Mercedes today and they don't even have any in Germany. I had my car in for a head gasket and the shop botched the chain tensioner reinstall, which resulted in my chain breaking first road trip. They claim the chain "just broke", so they're not honoring their service warranty. Opposite to your car, my car (a 1992 300SL (-24)) is completely mint with the exception of what's now under the hood. Total disaster.
