  • After 22 years in power, Yahya Jammeh has left Gambia.
The former President flew into exile heading for Equatorial Guinea.
He'd refused to step down after losing the presidential election last month.
The standoff caused neighbouring countries in West Africa to send in troops, threatening to remove Jammeh from office by force if he didn't budge.
Jammeh's departure is a new era for Africa's smallest country.
Several African leaders over the years have attempted to remain in power beyond their mandate.
    Some succeeded.
Other power struggles led to mass killings
Inside Story discusses the hurdles facing a peaceful democratic transition in the African continent.

emmanuella tano and most of them have been bled dry by corrupted leaders even Gambia n's helping to load millions of pounds. of goods on his special plane he was robbing off his country and people going to live in luxury while Gambia will have to borrow money or starve like a lot of other African countries cannot think of 1 African leader since they all got independence over 50 years ago and say yes he was a good man for his country even Mandela was only a stooge south Africa worst now than ever seems blacks in power just look after select few and the military to enforce what they want and it will only continue for years to come

Cmdaddy88 thank god you understand the system because now the Gambia is under the English and French... I hope for the best for my fellow Gambians because for the fact that he's been in power for 22years doesn't mean he should not practice his right to file a petition in the supreme court which I believed that President jammeh has a strong evidence on that but some leader's hate him for his truth leadership and development he has bring to the Gambia...can you imaging later the ECOWAS end up violating our constitution which they think is the solutions to treating Mr jammeh!!!

we know Senegal never wish good to Gambia, before senegalise president run quick to France looking for help why not he himself don't go to Gambia and negotiate with yaya jamme, but he did not do that only what he is looking for is to put fire in small lovely country with it developments, which there is no war only political issues, but the wise people knows what senegalise president is up to but he will not succeed by the grace of the almighty God

i think africans should stop using the title president for their leaders, because its certain that the leaders misinterpreted the word, they dont understand it, i suggest the title be change to maybe prime minister, chief, director, head master etc so they will know they are employed by the populace to work for them period
