Florence Bates, who played the overbearing Mrs. Van Hopper, was in real life a fascinating and admirable woman. At first, she taught elementary school; then, In 1914, she became the first woman admitted to the bar in Texas, and practiced law for several years in San Antonio. Later, she learned Spanish, and ran a bilingual radio program aimed at improving U.S.-Mexican relations. She married a wealthy man; then, when he lost his fortune in the 1929 crash, she founded and ran a bakery, which became very successful. When she finally became an actress, she was initially cast as Mrs. Bates in a stage production of Jane Austen's "Emma", and changed her own name to "Bates", in honor of her first theatrical assignment. It just goes to show that there may be no connection at all between a performer's onstage/onscreen persona, and their true self.

A teeny, weeny, bit forward. They just don't write scripts like this nowadays. Classic.

I don’t know why Edythe Van Hopper scolded her about the way she entered the conversation when she was answering a question.

The character of Ms. Van Hopper is that of a mean, overbearing, malicious social climber. She fawns on those she wishes to impress and treats with contempt anyone who is below her social status. Van Hopper's awful manners are a foretaste of what is to come in the character of Ms. Danvers, who is not only vicious but unhinged. The story is set up to present the unnamed wife of DeWinter in a web of deceit and treachery, not of her own making.

3:34 Laurence Olivier reminds of Benedict Cumberbatch with a mustache. He's dreamy!

Joy Haswell : Lawrence Olivier was certainly handsome in this true classic and what a gorgeous speaking voice he had.
Lovely scene where he is sitting at the table with the future second Mrs De Winter. He is asking her all the right questions. So interested in her. Have you no family he asks with concern. Are you going sketching this afternoon? Where? I'll take you in the car.
Ah, so lovely. Makes your heart melt.
