Sober curiosity: A movement away from alcohol

- Having a drink with friends to celebrate - or to unwind - is an accepted part of many people's lives. But more Canadians, especially younger ones, are turning away from alcohol. It's known as “sober curiosity," and it’s more than a temporary break, it's a way to create long-term habits for our physical and mental well-being.
Gen Z is at the forefront of this new movement, and as Sophie Lui discovered for The New Reality, they are making it cool to take a break from booze - helped, in part, by having more zero-proof choices than ever.

I quit smoking years ago, was costing too much. Alcohol is getting to be the same.

I work 12 hours a day 5 days a week. In the winter it’s night shift 12 hours every night 7 days a week, but on call. So yeah I usually have a Guinness after every shift. Couple more on weekends. I don’t see that changing anytime soon.

Why do people start making excuses/justifications for drinking alcohol when _someone else_ is talking about the fact that they personally choose not to drink?

I'm not a party goer, but I understand that they want to hang out without the influence of alcohol. You don't necessarily drink in order to enjoy yourself in a party. Looks like a good vibe.
Alcohol almost killed me. I’m glad for this segment and healthy options. I quit drinking recently and it’s been the best decision in my life. It was hard and frustrating but support and willpower helped a great deal. You are not alone! Ask for help.

It's so nice to have a tasty alternative to alcohol! Pop has never been much of a substitute and it's still nice to celebrate with a special drink using your beautiful glassware and setting an elegant table. I'm so glad to see there are new non-alcoholic products available. 🤔🤔🤔🤔

Innovative - I think this is a new wave - smart thinking. I quit long ago, simply because 2 drinks was leaving me hung over and foggy - YUK! I will try ONE’s for sure.

It’s adults getting together to drink juice….. some of us that have had children and are done with the “juice thing”, it’s a bit silly thinking actual adults will do this for long…. Not to mention, juice is terrible for you, it’s mostly sugars, we didn’t evolve to drink juice, that’s why oranges are the way they are…. How many oranges does it take to make a full 10oz glass of juice…10-15-20?.. how many empty calories (pure sugar) is that? Now, how many actual oranges can you eat in one sitting?
