The studios seemed to know they were making a low-budget product for a captive audience and had a lot of goofy fun with those limitations. The live action movie is very different in regards to budget and scope, but it still has a lot of self-aware humor and manages to tell a compelling story focused around feminism and the patriarchy, but less in the twisted internet screaming match way and more in the Betty Friedan "this system that was built long before any of us actually hurts everyone, men and women, so we all need to be better for each other and ourselves" way.

What made Ryan's Ken so brilliant is that everything feels so ridiculously ridiculous, but he put so much effort and commitment in it you can't just not love and admire him lol. This is the only way I would watch any of that movie. Bravo Owl Kitty!
I think his performance was heavily calibrated on the way children act. He has three iirc, so he basically did impressions of his kids 😂 and yeah, you can absolutely tell Ken in this movie is a child the whole time. Which makes him really adorable and funny. And sinister, because when he takes over Barbieland that’s a child taking homes and property away from all the other people over feelings and doing it with pure spiteful glee. And that’s when you realize nearly every man in power and every billionaire are all just overgrown children who refuse to grow up. Now, if only they had a Barbie to talk them into valuing themselves not based on their status symbols and on what they have, but on who they are inherently, things would be so much better. It’s definitely a layered performance.
It’s a super creative script and the film is actually kind of art-y but in a fun, non-pretentious way. Doesn’t take itself as seriously as its critics do. Form your own opinions!
