      Actually funny story I was taking art classes over the summer 2 and in my first class we were using speed ball ink(because they come in a set) and I hade to run to my next class and I though my ink was fully closed so I shoved it into my hoody pocket but it wasn’t closed

    You said you're not quite good at colored pencils and want to start using them more. I definitely recommend blending with solvent if you want to get a really saturated look (since you mainly do markers which are very saturated). You can also do mixed media with markers and colored pencils which would look really amazing; just make sure the pencils go on top of the markers and not the other way around

What they don't see is how much work I get done here all the while enjoying the heck out of my time here. Some people dread going to their work spaces...and because of that their happiness and productivity suffer.. Thanks for posting this video...lots of good ideas here for anyone's studio space.

      Thank you! And yes, I agree. If you're going to be spending massive amounts of time in a relatively small space, you have to be comfortable. • @guitarmaned5884
    @guitarmaned5884 7 лет назад

    Hi again Andrew,
    Just curious; did you buy/use the leg extensions for the table? After looking at 4-5 similar tables I'm probably going to end up getting the same one you did, but with an extra little shelf on one side. Specs inform that the table is only 31.5" high, which seems kind of short...but that's in the flat position and like yourself I would use the surface at an angle...says 35 degrees max...yours looks like it has a good slant on it, just about what I'd use as well :)
    Does it works well as a light table? I'm thinking of getting a piece of frosted plexiglass to place on top to diffuse the light...Amazon sells single pieces in different dimensions and I'm thinking it could rest on the retractable pencil holder...any thoughts as to how well that might work?
    Thanks again for your input :)

    Love the way you brainstorm storage / space-saving ideas. I'm that way as well with my craft room. One suggestion, if I may: Since the bookshelf to your right has empty shelves, I would replace it with a shallow set of drawers (and add dividers) to hold the items you referred to (color & white pencils, tubes, etc.) A couple of shelves can be mounted on the wall above it to hold the books currently on the bookshelf. Also, to make your sample swatches last a little longer, you could put them on 8 1/2" x 11'' paper inside page protectors in a binder. That would allow you to categorize the colors more as well. You would then just pull the binder from the bookshelf and easily flip it open to the tab/category you need (reds, skin tones, graphite pencils, sample splatters on grey paper, etc. Thanks for posting this. Good luck!

    • @AtlantaJones
      @AtlantaJones  7 лет назад +3

      Thanks, that's great! All I did was drill two holes in each container, then ran plastic zip ties through them, and around the top bar of the desk surface. You may have to loosen the glass top a bit but they should slip right under it, then you can re-tighten the glass.

    Hi Andrew,
    Thanks for posting the tour; not only did I enjoy it but it gave me some good ideas as well :) I am in the market for a new drawing table and have been considering a glass topped table for the same reasons you illustrate here...can you tell me the brand/model of your table? There are a lot of them out there! Also, I notice you have trays for supplies on both sides of your table; does this interfere with using a T Square at all? Thanks - Ed

    • @AtlantaJones
      @AtlantaJones  7 лет назад

      Hey thanks! The desk is the "Studio Designs Futura Craft Station": bit.ly/cXObeb. As for a T-square, I'm not sure. I imagine as long as they're on straight, they shouldn't pose an issue.

    • @guitarmaned5884
      @guitarmaned5884 7 лет назад

      Thanks for the quick response Andrew! I thought as much; S.D. manufactures more than a few different models of glass topped drawing/drafting tables (as do other manufacturers) and I've been looking at them all trying to decide which one will best suit me...any trouble assembling it?

    I would use a blob of plasticine for holding my ink bottle. It is more substantial than the cardboard you're using and would actually adhere to the desk top. I made a light table out of an old french easel (made a video about that) and used a plastic diffuser. If you mounted the diffuser on the underside of your glass table where the light bulb sits, you wouldn't have to frost your glass. Just some ideas...

    So I generally use copics and not prisma colors but I noticed in your list of skin tones you use Brick Beige and maybe it's because I use copic and not primsa colors, but the copic brick beige is much more of a blonde. I'd be interested to see the primsa color brick beige as a skin tone sometime. :)

      If what you want is a colored pencil white, a lot of artists swear by the Caran d'Ache white coloured pencil. I've tried it myself,and it gives excellent coverage, much better than Prismacolor white. Expensive,though, but it is available in open stock at some dealers, incuding Blick, I think. The general white charcoal is also good, but charcoal isn't colored pencil, and if you want white to use in a colored pencil piece,you are probably better off with colored pencil. The Prismacolor black are good, but you might also look at the Wolfs' carbon black pencils, I think they have 3 grades of black. Let us know what you find is best.

    You talk about white. And have a whole vid on it. Copic stocks this little ink pot of white ink with the finest hair brush affixed to the underside of the cap, it's specifically made for doing highlights in the eyes and on hair strands and stuff. It's incredibly opaque and fluid and beautiful. I picked one up at comicon a couple years ago.

      I'll try to work it into one of my next videos, or maybe do a short blog tutorial about it! Thanks for the suggestion :)

      So I realized I still haven't addressed this. I still plan to do a "mini" video for it, but the short version, is the back of my drafting table is lined with these plastic marker cubes: amzn.to/1LFo5nB. Each one holds 25 markers. I drilled holes into them and attached them to the metal bar on the back of the desk with plastic cable ("zip") ties. My Blick's store had them for a couple bucks cheaper than Amazon, but I can't find them on the Blick's site anymore. Cheers!

    Did you make that template for the marker swatches ? If so can you email it to me ? Or tell me where to get it?

      Here's the one I've been using: files.atlantajones.com/Prismacolor%20Marker%20Chart.pdf
      Can't say for sure if it's still up-to-date with their current colors, though. I'll have to look around and see if there's a newer one.

      It's just a cheap clamp-on light. Anything will do :)

    That table is a great idea with the markers at the top.I know what I'll be making for my colour pencils etc. The glove at 15 bucks is not a bad idea__I use my fingerless gloves , ie I cut the fingers off the gloves I get at the local Chinese $2 shop ! As for storage, go up the wall. In my studio I have everything on wheels ; watercolours stay with watercolours, oils with oils, acrylics with same ; one job ,one workstation. There is less clutter. I couldn't stand those beige walls though... proper lighting 4800 K to 5500K for'' daylight '' all over the studio would be nice against a neutral value 7 grey wall and no colour bias. I even like to hang things off the ceiling to clear the floor space_efficiency first, looks 2nd.In some public service offices even cops are at their computers standing ! it seems to be better than sitting, efficiency wise. This would save more floor space and you won't get a hunch back .Those mechanical arms are great. If you decide to get an airbrush have a look at the Aztecs line. Nice video and more power to you when you slowly morph into a new career. Cheers.

    Would you please share the name/model # of your printer? I'm in the market for a new one.

      What I have is the Epson WF-7510, but it's been updated to the WF-7610 here: amzn.to/2u4BtB4

      Thanks for that info. I clicked the link and Amazon noted that that model is not available so Iooked at a few similar. I knew it would be a lot more $$ than a typical home office printer, but didn't realize the difference would that great. I think a trip to Best Buy/Staples, etc. is needed.

      Yeah it's not super cheap, but could be way worse :) I think the added expense is because it's "wide format" and can print/scan up to 13" x 19".

    • @bevroberts8440
      @bevroberts8440 7 лет назад

      Yes! It is that wide format that I was attracted by plus your note that it scanned so well.

      And don't doubt yourself bro, I used to say the same thing about not being able to be a professional artist until I saw people who weren't very good making a living with art... I made the decision to do art full time and am living in Maui doing art...you definitely have the skills and the tools, just pull the trigger and believe in yourself

      OmarsDad Thanks for the encouragement! I think part of it is that I've been a web developer for almost 18 years now and I've settled into a good salary with benefits. Do I think we could "survive" on my art? Maybe, but I wonder what we'd have to sacrifice for daddy to do what he wants.

    These days digital artists are in. I don't see why keep so much hands on art manually when you can do most things with a program. And with just as much signature technique. All I need manually is a sketchpad and pencil. The sketch ain't nothing. It's about the final piece . Only problem is the internal hackers. But manual drawing is more traditional.
