I'm finally going to subscribe as I love David's "That's 15 minutes of my life I'm never going to get back" and Hudson's dedication to putting together a complete user guide. Thank you (all of you) for this. It was enjoyable and since I have had the Z9 in my hands for less than a week (but used it daily for BIF / Wildlife thus far) I'll go through your setup/banks/extended banks and other videos because this is one area I enjoy hearing how those who use the setting try to optimize them for their work. I typically adopt the setting for a week and see if it works for me or modify it so it fits my work better. David, I've lost more than 15 minutes looking for other features that moved or disappeared. Hit rate has gone through the roof and I've just been using QXD cards at the moment (but will upgrade soon). I used DX crop mode straight out of the box (in fact have a button programmed to quickly switch modes to this) and find it very useful. I believe the number you quoted for the DX mode megapixels is not correct (but is close) and I believe it is 19mp (but who is counting). As you guys know, between the 0.5 sec faster focusing (even with the 600mm VR FL ED F mount and FTZii adapter, the entire immediate auto eye detect/deep learning prior to AF makes the entire experience that much faster and easier. THIS SAID: Can anyone explain exactly what the AI is behind the "DEEP LEARNING" Nikon talks about? There are a few other quirks I'll save talking about until I review the entire content of your setup videos. THANK YOU FOR TAKING THAT TIME! Subscribed! ONE LAST THING: David, I was sitting in a pond shooting a white egret fishing. It suddenly lifted off into flight (and I keep shooting). As the eyes of the egret grew bigger and bigger in the EVF I was frozen and kept shooting. Then it was a white blur and I hear "splash". I slowly look up from the viewfinder and the egret had sat itself down only three feet from the end of my lens. YES, silent shooting indeed. Can we say "SWEEEET?"
I've been using my Z9 since just before Christmas, and I agree, the card slot door was an issue, but after time it thankfully does loosen up. But I thought the same.
I gotta say, while i have a Z6ii for my all-around shooting, i've kept my Canon DSLR for bird photography. But David's shot of the swallow about to get that bug...Unbelievable! Ok, Nikon, you got my attention!
I have heard from a number of Sony A1 shooters that having zebra stripes has been a game changer for getting the correct exposure on the fly in still mode. I don't believe the Z9 has the same functionality which surprised me. How can you achieve something similar with the Z9 especially while taking pictures of wildlife?
Do you (or david archer) notice when in DX mode the autofocus locking better on far targets? If something is too far to get the eye, does changing to DX and making the subject more frame filling assist with eye focus?
Love this talk, hearing how new Z9 users are doing. Thank you! And... This is extremely trivial, but I've heard you mention a couple of times that the DX mode on the Z9 is bigger than the D500's native size. Actually, the D500 is 20.1 megapixels, (5568 x 3712) and according to the manual, the Z9's DX mode is 19 megapixels. (5392 X 3592) Certainly not a deal-breaker... :)
Mike (I didn't see your comment) I just said the same thing. I've had the Z9 in hand a week (prior D850/D500) and if you move to mirrorless with the Z9 it will blow you away. For three days I had nearly a 100 percent hit rate even with BIF (Terns diving) and to capture the change in wing position all the way down to the water and to eye autofocus through the initial splash is just insane. I was a hold out, but it has moved the bar in a hurry. You now have to look for the frames to discard, rather than keep. Much luck to you this year.
@@dance2jam I've been totally in on the Z system for a couple of years now, (including lenses) and can't wait for the Z9 to get here! (The last "flagship" I owned was a D3X.)
@@HudsonHenryPhoto Thank you, for all the hard work in producing very helpful videos. (I'm especially fixated on my yet-to-be-delivered Z9, so the "banks" series was great! :)
@@MikeJamesMedia Us Nikon folks had to wait, but the Z9 in just the first week convinced me it was "under hyped" if that was possible. It's not perfect, but most of the time for wildlife, action, sports it will have been worth your investment!
Nothing beats the 500, but it's far less versatile if your subject moves in close. The 500 is sharper by far edge to edge wide open and very fast focusing. The 100-400 is extermeley versatile, smaller and lighter. Tough call that depends on your needs.
I'd think they could, but will they? They've ignored all calls for zoomed in depth of field preview for years now... :-( I'd guess Exposure Delay and nuanced bracketing are gone now.
Sold my D5 and ordered the Z9 also. Look forward to using it!
Just watched the 4 part setup guide, thanks for all the great information. BTW I love that hybrid action shooting mode.

Gosh, can’t wait to get mine! Hope I have it before the Costa Rica Workshop!

No the autofocus locks like mad in both modes. It's insane.
Hudson do you think the Z9 is going to be too heavy for the Move Shoot Move?
I'll have to test. Not sure yet. It would be pushing it...

Ooops yeah. Looked it up. I was misremembering the numbers and should have double checked. Thanks for the correction and the kind manner of it. :)

Please let me know your opinion- which lens do you now recommend for bird photos; Z100-409mm or 500pf?
Nothing beats the 500, but it's far less versatile if your subject moves in close. The 500 is sharper by far edge to edge wide open and very fast focusing. The 100-400 is extermeley versatile, smaller and lighter. Tough call that depends on your needs.
can the Exposure Delay Mode be returned via a firmware update?
I'd think they could, but will they? They've ignored all calls for zoomed in depth of field preview for years now... :-( I'd guess Exposure Delay and nuanced bracketing are gone now.
Has David tried the new Z100-400 yet on his birds?
He didn't get one. He's a 500pf/400 2.8 man. ;)
@@HudsonHenryPhoto mine is on its way. I hope it proves to be a wise choice!?
