Gonz is one of the reasons why I consider skating more of an art form than a sport.

I'm so envious of his care free approach to EVERYTHING. Talking to strangers, doing big tricks in front of people, skating through New York traffic.

I immigrated from Mexico and needed strong roll models... he is one.
Yeah since he's Irish too, it inspired me to be a better person.
Yeah, since his name's Mark it inspired me to buy a bunch of markers.
He exactly embodies all of the reasons why I started skating, loved skating, and still love skating, despite the fact that I don't skate anymore.
You can always take it up again. Just need to know your limits if you are old like me. I'm going on 50 and started up again earlier this year.
I started skating again after a 10 year hiatus. I recommend it
you skate - it's just been a while. i've been on my board a lot lately and loving it. a little expectation management is required but the fun is out there waiting for us, always!

I understand young kids saying Gonz isn't "that good" or whatever because they didn't grow up in the context of when people weren't pushing boundaries because coming out of the 80s skateboarding was A LITTLE standard, their context is tre flipping onto handrails and 1,000,0000 stairs but those tricks wouldn't have been invented if not for guys like him, and Mullen and Tony going fucking at it back then. I love seeing creativity flourish in any discipline, it's a beautiful thing. Even if it's not the most tech shit ever, just be a little humble.
The thing about Gonz is that nowadays people watch him when he shows up in other videos like he does in some FA, Jenkem and so on. But because he just cruises around and is being weird and not really doing much skating in modern videos, the younger generation don't even realise, just how good he really was.

Mark's street skating could have possibly been the original inspiration for "Zoo York".. He's got the funnest style and one of my main heroes thought I get nervous for him going in and out of all those peeps on the streets.
So rad though and almost always in control and then controls they out of control. We Skateboarders are lucky. I can't think of too many scenes that have such dynamic personalities and approach to life.
It's hard for me to comprehend that this man had to lear how to ollie at some point.

I saw him at a krooked demo around 2007 and he snapped his deck, he saw my board and asked if he could finish the demo with it and he would give me a free deck after. I said "Of course, go for it". I met up with him after to get my board and he just said "Thanks bud" and walked away. I asked him about the free deck and he goes "Oh my bad, I totally forgot". We walk to his car in the parking lot and he opens his trunk and has no decks. Then he goes back to the krooked team manager and asks if they have more decks but they threw them all at the merch toss. Gonz takes me back to his car again, whips out his nutsack through his zipper and say "There's my balls, wanna see my deck?". I was so confused but it was incredibly metal.
"I'll give you $2 if you get it down" kid gets it down ..Gonz ask for $2 from the camera man ahhahahahahaha

That shit is tight, Gonz is one of the skaters I've always looked up to since back in the day, he paved the way and helped define the foundations of modern street skating. So much respect
Gonz was sick. I love the Vision Streetwear black suede kicks. And those spots were straight out of Thrasher. A kid living in the hills of NC and many more like him learned to skate watching these videos.
Gonz's attitude and abilities allowed him to show us all our own possibilities and those of the concrete, brick, asphalt and steel around us. It was important to me, because we didn't have parks, most pools were vinyl lined, and there was only one backyard ramp in the area, and that was in an adjacent smaller city. We skated street. My first real board was a Vision Gonz, with Tracker trucks and OJ wheels, loved Gonz then and still do.
This was the real skating I grew up with... when we skated for fun, not to try and land tricks for instagram/youtube/etc because we wanted everyone else to see what we could do
Instagram and YT is making skateboarding, blading, every thing feel cheap

Gonz inspires me so much its un describable, its incredible how he balances between creativity and skill, fun, and even social aspects his spots................................. most of all hes having fun it so awesome, this really separate him into a legend category all its own, exery time I hear a skateboard in nyc I check to see its mark, but you can usually tell. Saw the Gansz at a skate show in Hawaii in 1989, doing a rail slide on his board upside down during the practice sessions. Realized he looked at everything differently and was super inspired!

I totally stand corrected , for some reason I thought that line was regular, knowing well that Gonz is Goffy. I guess I'm not used to seeing Gonz get in many switch lines with switch 360 flips, although not surprised since he skates anything and everything. 100% backing the 90s EMB Steez Mongo push, quick hop to switch.
