- “I think it’s safe to say John Osborne is a f****** beast!”
That’s how Chris Shiflett kicks off this episode of Shred With Shifty, featuring bearded Brothers Osborne shredder-in-chief John Osborne. Osborne joins Shifty to dissect his blistering country-rock ripping on the band’s breakout single, “Stay A Little Longer.”
Osborne tells Shifty about failing miserably at guitar in college, where he learned to read and play bass clef but never got the hang of the treble clef. It’s no surprise when Osborne admits he’s taken notes from players like Stevie Ray Vaughan, Dickey Betts, Eric Johnson, and Skynyrd shredders Allan Collins and Gary Rossington, but his very first guitar influence? Kurt Cobain, and the Nirvana frontman’s anxious energy. “I’m a little bit awkward, and I have social anxiety, but I can talk to people through music,” says Osborne. As far as technicality, though, he and Shifty agree that bluegrass guitar playing is “the Usain Bolt of musicianship.”
To recap the “Stay A Little Longer” leads, Osborne plays a stock blackguard 1953 Fender Telecaster that he scooped from Carter Vintage Guitars. (Listen in to learn why it and some other Fenders from that era have an abnormally thick “Friday neck.”) He explains that he wanted the solo to have the same philosophy as legendary solos like those in “Free Bird” and “Hotel California”: hooky, repetitive, accented, and not too shreddy. Plus, he reveals the “un-Photoshopped” blips in the solo that stayed on the record.

During covid lockdown I came across his guitar playing watching a rig rundown, and have been trying to play this song correctly . I’ve never paid attention to country music before, but both his brothers voice and his on guitar blows me away
Thank you boys! Shifty, after all these years, guitar is fun again. Great shows.
Our pleasure!
EASILY one of the greatest solos of all time. I get goosebumps every single time. Fits the song so unbelievably well on top of just being technically incredible. It even makes me laugh at one section!
These interviews are awesome! I love how John gives a lesson, isn’t afraid to make mistakes and Shifty doubles down on the risk taking in public view. Excellent work gentlemen!
Brothers Osborne are my absolute favorite band and I think this session with John highlighted exactly why! Every time I hear one of them speak, sing, or play, I can’t help but root for them. Also, saw them in concert a few months ago and daaaaamn
John is the reason that fell in love with Country music! I get to see them in June and I can’t wait. I’m in the section where he is just a few rows back!!
Yes!!! This solo has HAUNTED me since it first came out. I've tried to learn it multiple times and I've never gotten some of these licks exactly right. Gonna have to carve out a few hours for this one!
Agreed 👍 been trying to learn this forever, I got about 70% down this video helps alot in filling in parts
This is one of those solos when you hear it live it just absolutely blows you the fuck away.
Very generous with his showing this epic solo! Great guitar playing on that song. I saw them in concert a couple times and it was so inspiring!
I remember when this song came out , I probably replayed that solo 500 times than and 10,000 times since. Great inteview,.
Man I am so pumped I stumbled on to this video!! What a cool concept!! I’m all in now and want to see all your interviews!! John Osborne seems like a super cool down to earth guy!! Great player!!👍🏼🎸
This is becoming my favourite podcast, please more.
Thank you ❤
First time I heard this solo was live at Red Rocks. Bros were opening for Stapleton and I wasn’t familiar.
After the solo, I was like “what in the world was that?” And have been hooked since.
What an amazing player!
Man I'm jealous! I'd kill to see Brothers Osborne and Chris Stapleton at Red Rocks
This has always been the way we do these things. Egos out the door when we are learning. For the laymen this is soooo valuable to have this stuff laid out for ya. I am old enough to have had to take the needle on and off the record 500 times to cop Jeff Beck lol. Enjoy these everyone. Koodos to these two very fine players and cats!!!
As always, JD john_drew_jd
great episode, guys! thank you both.
The thicker neck is where the tone is my man, just warmer he’s so right. So many have different opinions about heavier guitar, lighter guitar better tone etc. However, after playing for over 35 years working in a high end shop, doing set ups and repairs, playing thousands of new, old, vintage guitars etc. Imho the best tone is a chunky dry “tempered or roasted if new”( Play some Novos) neck and a very thin finish on a dry ( roasted or tempered body) if new. Love the Friday necks. Great interview, incredible talent the both of you. Thank you x10!
Johns story at 29 minutes was the funniest thing ever, just brilliant!
Just starting to get back into electric guitar here, and stuff like this is keeping me stoked and learning. Thanks, Shifty!
Glad to hear it!
This was great, love Bros Osborne and John is absolutely a monster player.
I came in at 10,474 on the Rolling Stone list and am so glad that no one complained about it, so I'm happy. 😎🤓
John has been on my guitar player's radar for a while, love his style ,thanks for inviting him
It'd be great to have some more with Nick Perri, Keith Urban and Adam Shoenfeld,
Great job Chris, keep them comin'
Have a great NYE 🎉
Such a cool interview. Great band and now realize how cool John is as a person. Becoming one of my fav RUclips shows
I love this show!! Thank you
Love this solo and have been working on it, breaking it down section by section. Thanks for covering this!!!
Freaking awesome! Entertaining as hell and informative.
God if I could
Spend two hours with John to go over some stuff my life would be complete
He is scary good
World class songwriter. He’s not just Brothers Osborne. He’s that guy who shows up on every awards show… “Surprise! He wrote that too.”
Honestly not a big country fan but Brothers Osborne..........forget about it they are amazing.....what a force.
This solo is in my top 5 fav of all time
This podcast scratches me where i itch keep em coming
Killer band. Killer guitar player.
This is so great. I needed this and love the regular dude approach. P.S. I have no idea who this guitarist is at all. I am going to go check them out. I was just so amazed how chill this show is. This guy is just like me hanging with my regular buds. So refreshing. Like if he came over I would pour him one from my kegerator and grill an extra steak!
John’s a super cool cat, and an absolute beast of a guitar player. A teacher…not so much 🤣
He is a badass.
Two badazz geeetar men right there!! 🎸🎸🤘😎🤘🍻cheers
Shifty... caged system??? Come on, even Dave probably knows what that is. 😂🤣😂 Love you videos, great guests!!!
I agree, that is shocking and hilarious and beautiful and saddening that I may know more about guitar than Chris and I am still way worser
@@colokor 🤣😂🤣
If you can find it, the demo version of Stay A Little Longer is even better than the release version, imo. Every bit as epic; just a little more concise. My favorite part is that climb that they kinda lifted from the Allman Brothers' Whipping Post, where it goes up, and up and up and then just EXPLODES. I also love the false ending that precedes it. I'll be mining this for more nuggets, cuz I'm a huge fan of licks that are easier than they sound; you don't want to be looking at your fingers the whole time, in case some gal's bewbs fall out of her top.
Just sat down last Tuesday and transcribed this solo😂 should’ve waited a week! Hahaha
Hey Chris! Huge fan here. Not sure if you remember me but you asked me for a place for 22 Jacks after a show in Ft. Lauderdale. I was 14 lol!!! Anyway I wanted to let you know that I'm in a Me First tribute band and learning your solos has been a blast...especially the one for I Will Survive and Summertime. Did you record both of those?
Thanks Shifty!
This dude is cool as fuck and a great player.
How could he not of heard of the CAGED system?
just the best
So
I didn't pay much attention to what I clicked on. I thought, man, when this guy shaves his face. He looks a lot like Chris Shiflet.
What amp is John going through for this? champ?
My dad gave me the bull speech when I was like 8 🤣😂🤣😂
Shoot me Straight is also great!
Moat rockin Solo in all of country music
There are "Friday afternoon frames" in the hand-made cycling (bicycle frame manufacturing) industry - and it's a real thing. However, you DO NOT want one of those. I will gladly trade my beautiful (but deadly) hand-made Italian carbon-fiber Friday afternoon bike frame for anyone's 50s-vintage Friday Tele (and yes, preferably stock but then again, I'm not that good to be so fussy but I, too, have big "third-baseman" hands). (PS - Fun interview!)
Its not a friday neck, 53,s are known for having fuller necks. Back in the day the 53 always cost more than other years because of that. Your welcome children
I was playing those licks 50 years ago compliments of Jeff Beck. Musicians are so not today that when someone like John steps up it's like WOW! When they are nothing special at all. It's just that guitar is not very poplular any more and there is little talent as before. He is a recent collector, Friday necks??? as are many so be careful with whom you do business with...
Way Too Long ?
Great guys great players!!
