My aunt gave me Howard’s album
“Goodie’s” for my 10th birthday.
And he plays exquisitely on it.
His tone,phrases and comping
Is excellent. He came to town to play for a college jazz competition it was big band stuff. And during a break he played and the lights came up in the auditorium and people were talking and Howard was playing solo guitar and largely ignored.
Then he played again solo guitar at a place in half moon bay and me and my aunt went to hear him and when we got there he played and there really was no one there. And what stayed with me all these years was what a great artist Howard was and gracious
and just played. When I met him he was very kind to me. I tell friends and remind myself of this story when I am largely being or totally being ignored.

My teacher Rick Whitehead told me his neighbor lent him "Howard Roberts is a Dirty Guitar Player" when he was a teenager and that was what drove him to picking up jazz guitar. He spent over 20 years in the USAF Airmen of Note and is a monster player. Howard is one of the best to ever live.

Before funk (as a genre) came into being.
There were the “wrecking crew “ prominent in the 60’s and the Old Guys who played in the Studio doing many TV Shows -Live Radio- Movies- Jingles-and Record Dates. Lots of MOR Music Backgrounds. So who were the Journeyman between the two age groups / time periods? Hmmm. Leon Russell,Paul Bryant, David Gates, James Burton,a little later Glen Campbell.
But the very best player was simply one person …..Howard Roberts ! The other guys all knew it. Cher tells a story( prob not directly but a recantation ) of the time when Howard was late for a session to play on an important rec date. Being Produced by the late Phil Spector. When Phil started yelling and lecturing Howard on his timing or his playing. He looked at Spector carefully bent over and neatly put his equipment away. Stood up and told Spector to FO and walked out. To the many there this was simply not done. The only One capable of getting on with a career the next day was Howard . That’s how good he was.
Proud is not even slightly descript of his impact on you ( and thousands) of Guitarist’s he worked with and taught. Jay please upload some of your stuff after you complete this so we can hear you in depth. Why Cap did not continue to release more stuff is beyond me. I am going to email Don Was of Blue Note To find out if they know what they have in their Vault and suggest they remaster and re release his Cat. Restfully Michael
