The science IS impressive: when I came across the idea of quantum effects in photosynthesis while reading Solar, I got the funny feeling that I had just read about the same thing in a physics journal. I looked it up, and sure enough there it was. Tom Aldous's ideas are real. Hats off to Ian McEwan!
