Fat shaming looks pretty much the same today as it did then - let's not kid ourselves about that. People go on and on about their weird fixation with the enormous threat obesity is supposedly becoming while pretty much every single woman and most men have some degree of eating disorders by now. Women were self aware in a different, much more healthier way back in the 60s. Now our self-awareness is manipulated unscrupulously by a fashion industry that does not seem to want to celebrate femininity, but instead insists on either pushing unattainable androgyny or an equally unrealistic hyper-sexualised mode of femininity as the "ideal". These women seem happy and they look lovely- there is nothing freakish about this contest. I would rather identify with being "plump and lovely" than a fetishized "BBW".

What is fascinating in 2020 is I shop in alot of vintage stores. The actual sizes of the clothes were smaller. I cannot fit into a 1950-60's size 10, but can fit into a modern size 10. That's really messed up about the fashion industry. At least with men's clothing the size is the actual measurement instead of a feel-good sales tactic. That means the women back then were even smaller than we think--even the "fatties".
Vanity sizing started in the 70s after standardized sizes fell out of favor. After that the sizing became wildly inconsistent per store. 🙄 (though the standardized sizing wasn't all good)
@@grannydearest9129 A lot of the variations in size was and still is due to the cutting machines. Large batches of cloth are cut by a machine which comes down. The cloth at the top comes out as a different size to the cloth at the bottom.
Back in the late 70s I went to buy a pattern for the new high waisted pants. Asked for a size 12 which matched my hip size. I had used size 12 patterns forever at that point. If I can find an old pattern from before that time, if it matches my measurements now, it will fit with very few adjustments. But if I buy a new pattern based on my measurements I am swimming in it. And I have sewn thing for other people with the same results. Modern You Tube sewers are always doing mock up. It is because modern pattern sizing is useless. I also actually were a smaller size now at 65, than I did at 20. Yet, I am quite a bit larger. There isn't a hope I could put my wedding dress on. Men's clothing is no longer safe either. I always bought my husband's pants. Then suddenly they were too big. The waist on men's pants can be up to 6 inches bigger than stated. Now I make him come with me and try them on.

The winner looks curvy to me, not fat. It's interesting the words they use then in comparison to now, though. "Fatty" is not a really nice way to describe someone who is plus-sized, and I'm not sure how people who who bigger feel about being called 'fat.' I think some people are OK with it and some people are not.
I think what most people are missing in all the comments on here is the historical context. In the 40's during WWII Britain suffered terribly from bombing raids. There was food rationing in the UK and the rest of Europe that was way more intense than in the United States. Even after the war was over, rationing continued and it took a while for Britain to get back on its feet. Most people were thin due to hunger until the economic upswing of the late 50's and early 60's. Sure, a nipped in waist was preferred but curves came back in fashion in the 50's because it showed you were healthy, prosperous, or never experienced the horrors of war. One of the most famous icons of the time, Audrey Hepburn, nearly starved to death in Holland during WWII and suffered from anemia and other complications from malnutrition for the rest of her life. People started to put on unhealthy weight after the war because they still could not afford quality food, and around that time, companies started to market cheap products with lots of preservatives. The British diet, much like the American diet, trended towards high carbs, high sodium, fatty and sugary foods of convenience that did not really include a lot of fresh veggies or lean meats. No one really understood about the link between high cholesterol and diet, and did not even take high cholesterol seriously until the 70's.
Only true to an extent. People then and before generally had far better figures, man and women, because they didn't eat much processed food except for flour in breads and pastry. They also walked a lot more and generally exercised. They would let their heavy Sunday dinner settle for half an hour or an hour so as to not cause ulcers, then go for a walk for half a mile to a mile. They would take their children outside in the garden it park and play with them, running around playing tag, skipping, kicking or batting a ball. Playgrounds and parks were usually busy on weekend afternoons.

The only difference really is what exactly has been considered correct or incorrect. Also, the term "PC Nazi" is beyond ridiculous. But maybe your understanding of the second world war and the role the nazis played in it is as warped and limited as your general understanding of history seems to be. Those families were possibly the last generation to know what ‘Home, Hearth & Family’ really equalled, which was contentment and safety in a truly loving, well kept Haven. Quite unlike much of what is going on nowadays. I do reaction videos about a woman who weighs about 450lbs. Mainly because of her bad behaviour and the fact that she calls herself an “influencer”. The fact is that she does influence vulnerable and suggestible young people who may feel that they too may follow such a “career path”.

A lot of those ladies would be menopausal, often plays havoc with metabolism. Big people I think are the last target for bigots that don't want to be taken to court. PC is stupid and doesn't work anyway. They were 'lighter' days.
@MsMissSunday Actually back then it was all about being thin and healthy, as they said in the video, fashion houses were JUST waking up to the fact that clothes needed to be made for bigger women. As a novelty they decided to have this pageant. Nowadays there is a lot of hate and disgust towards thin people, saying that it's unhealthy and even media outlets have been "skinny bashing".
I thought this video was really fun. And to those who say these women weren't fat...... well...these women are all overweight in varying degrees and one of the meanings of fat is overweight. So yes, these women are fat.
The true litmus text of sexism is whether or not the person practicing the discrimination believes in the biological and essential superiority of the male sex to the female sex. This essential superiority is BOUND to have some absurd consequences. "’Tis true, thro’ Want of Learning, and of that Superior Genius which Men as men lay claim to, she was ignorant of the Natural Inferiority of our Sex, which our Masters lay down as a Self-Evident and Fundamental Truth. She was nothing in the Reason of Things, to make this either a Principle or a Conclusion, but much to the contrary; it being Sedition at least, if not Treason to assert it in the Reign. For if by the Natural Superiority of their Sex, they mean that every Man is by Nature superior to every Woman, which is the obvious meaning, and that which must be stuck to if they would speak Sense, it wou’d be a Sin in any Woman to have Dominion over any Man, and the greatest Queen ought not to command but to obey her Footman, because no Municipal Laws can supersede or change the Law of Nature; so that if the Dominion of the Men be such, the Salique Law, as unjust as English Men have ever thought it, ought to take place [iv] over all the Earth, and the most glorious Reigns in the English, Danish, Castilian, and other Annals, were wicked Violations of the Law of Nature!" - Mary Astell, 1711.
Tell you what. You work inside sewers for a year as men do. Also consider who worked out the best mixes for bricks and cement, and that firing them and clay made them useful. As an elderly woman I know that women wouldn't have thought of rubbing two sticks together to make fire. Men built this world and I am very grateful they have carried us along simply because we were pretty when young and could give them babies. We women would be living in caves without clever men. Anything that any woman (I mean born as a female) has developed has only come off things men had actually invented from scratch. That is a fact. Stop being brainwashed and give men their due respect instead of always pulling them down. No wonder many of them have given up trying to do wonderful things, and have given up on women.
The things people were able to say :D

As a novelty they decided to have this pageant. Nowadays there is a lot of hate and disgust towards thin people, saying that it's unhealthy and even media outlets have been "skinny bashing".
Lmfao!! miss fat and beautifull id win dat contest !! ;D

beauty is subjective. i think fat is not pretty at all. But that is the way I feel

"fat and beautiful" would not cut it these days for a competition name

The 1960s version of fat is todays thicc.

And to those who say these women weren't fat...... well...these women are all overweight in varying degrees and one of the meanings of fat is overweight. So yes, these women are fat.
I rekon the men must have been blind
No wonder many of them have given up trying to do wonderful things, and have given up on women.
hmm those girls are svelte
