- The new Skywatcher 20" f/3.9 Ultra Compact Dobsonian. This was on display at the Texas Star Party 2016. This is apparently the prototype production model and this series will drop sometime this year or next. The auto guider port has me very interested!

show us the view dude
Skywatcher have really made it easy for amateur astronomers to have access to high apertures.
Yeah indeed i’m saving up for the 18”
Deep Sky Dude is a good candid videographer. I didn't realize it was being video'd. It's a good thing I kept my remarks kosher.
Very well thought out system, especially the primary support.
Thanks for the review. I would love to see more
The background chatter on this is amazing
Visium1 lol. Yeah. 😂
@@DeepSkyDude Really sweet rig. I'm like 🤤
Can't imagine the views through that thing! My 8 inch dob will look tiny next to that behemoth!
I bought the same in 18". Light and details are amazing. I came from an 12" dobsonian and colours appears with 18" . But pay attention with weight with with scope. It's really uncufortable to carry 90 kilos in goto version. But satr are amazing !!
Hello, can you tell me, what’s the eyepiece hight in zenith? Thx
@@Endurofreund about 2,2 meters.
2.2m on the 18“? That is huge ! Greetings
@@Endurofreund you need a 2 steps stool.
Nice setup video Deep Sky Dude!
Cheers!
Beautiful bit of kit!
Binoviewers are really amazing but this one along with that scope must be out of this world. ...
Im really happy with my 16" and a bino..
OMG that 20 inch Primary Mirror is GORGEOUS !!! I just have to get myself one of those !! Absolutely pristine, sparkling, beautiful, perfect, jaw-droppingly gorgeous Mirror !!! I'm soooo Jealous Sir !! haha
wesley donnelly it is a pretty neat scope. A buddy of mine has one and he seems to enjoy it. 😎
They've come a long way from my old Sky Designs scope (17.5" f/4.5) circa 1990.
Superb cool telescope 🔭❤️ dear, thank you for informational video... Fully enjoyed 😀💖🎁🎁🎁🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Gorgeous, ahhh one day 🤣
It's all about aperture baby!
If only they would bring out a 16" version!
Lovely bit of glass
I have questions about the backfocus, please.
What kind of glasspath corrector (required magnification or added backfocus length) would be necessary to use a bino head on this instrument ?
Is there a way to use a coma corrector such as the SW aplanetic 4 elements ED coma corrector for visual use ?
I know GSO is providing the same GPU Optics corrector with a 2" visual back, but you can get a visual back with a 48 mm thread from Teleskop Service in germany to use with the Skywatcher one.
An extension ring may be necessary to be able to adjust the required distance from the corrector to the eyepiece focal plane, but then the whole assembly can then be fully countersunk into the focuser with just the visual back standing out.
However, would the instrument backfocus be enough to allow this use ?
Thanks !
I have never seen a side view of the main mirror. Just thinking about casting the glass blank makes my head ache. No wonder the scope costs eight grand. Sadly, my budget does not allow for such luxuries. Wonder how much I can get for the cat?
I am also using BITRON -27. It would be wonderful if you watch it with its telescope.
There's Howie Glatter with his collimator. Cool.
Wow, this is like jewelry. That primary glass casting......WTF!
My goodness I think I'm in love...lol
The shroud seems to come in the light path, because of the 6 truss tubes architecture that makes the tubes to come very close to the mirror circumference at midway... Isn't it a problem ?
Z80Man when we observed thru it it wasn't an issue. In fact I was looking down the barrel a few times that night and the shroud was clear of the objective for sure.
Many thanks.
I'm currently using a 2005 10" SW newtonian on an EQ6 (with go-to upgrade), heavily modded (hand repolished mirror, carbon tube, GSO crayford, etc.), but I'm sometimes a bit frustrated because, not having time to carry it to darker skies when it's not raining, I observe from home most of the time.
The problem is, in such circumstances, light gathering can be a problem, at least to locate faint objects, and more important, to align the mount, as in addition to being located in the southern hemisphere, the south pole can't be seen from my garden.
This makes alignment extremely long and painful, and direct pointing deep sky ojects, apart from the easily visible ones, is almost impossible using the go-to because I could almost never achieve a perfect alignment.
For both these reasons, I'm quite interested in this instrument's qualities : compactness, alt-az alignment with go-to and encoders, and of course, large mirror and its light collection power. The price is obviously anther problem, but still not impossible to overcome over time.
However, the primary mirror itself seems to raise some questions. How precisely polished is it ? I think SW says it's at least diffraction limited, but is it true for all models ? I've read the ones intended for the US market are better selected, and I'm not in the US. Of course this could have been true two years ago when the 18" was launched : how's the overall quality nowadays ? Especially for the 20" model, of course.
Then another thing I couldn't find anywhere : are there any available additionnal accessories ? An eyepieces shelf would be great, for instance... Or maybe a battery holder, that would allow the power source to follow the base rotation, avoiding the supply wires to tangle around it... Or something allowing to fit an additional finder, such as a Telrad or green laser, perpendicular to the mirror cell, allowing to aim comfortably standing from behind the telescope rather than twisting one's neck from atop a ladder ! :p
Do you have a link or can you feel me about those binocular eye piece
Those 3D Bino's to go with it too!?? F**K ME I'd be like a kid at Christmas!! lol
What happens when temperatures fluctuates? Doesn't the whole thing get warped, ever so slightly, blurring the image?
The mirror will keep up with fluctuations in air temperature because it is not simply a thick disk of glass.
Is it easier to transport a 16" big tube telescope or a telescope of this kind, a 20" open telescope? Is it nessecary to put the black cloth on it?
@@Markaras yeah these are way easier than the old school styles. They break down into a small package so you can transport them easier. You definitely need a shroud to keep out stray light too.
Hey. I would like to know if do you need to colimate the mirros every time you use it.
Typically yes if you want sharp views.
Hello, fantastic telescope, the primary mirror is cast in one piece
i was wondering who made the cameo appearance, howie... :)
Hello Danny!
Cheers!
3 D bino occulars. Wow just wow!
It's just an optical gimmick! Makes for a more pleasant experience at the eyepiece if both eyes are open and observing the image.
What is this 3d 5 pieces of glass ??? 😳 Where do they come from, what do they improve ? I'm super interested in knowing more what this is all about but couldn't find any information about this so far, please let me know where I can find info about that !!! Thanks :)

Every time I look to find one online they are out of stock. Where can we buy the 20?
Let me ask my friend on the inside and see what he says. He may have a source for ya.
Thats fucking beautiful
What's this thing sale for 25k$ to 35k$ or 45k$
Kilindo top demais show eu quero hum brinquedo igual a esse 🔭😁😄
So, did you enjoy the view? :D
how easy to disassemble this thing? i hope i dont to reassemble everything. Their collapsible dobs was amazing
Centrioless I have another video with footage of my friend putting this exact scope together. It's the TSP 2017 video. I didn't get a chance to help so I'm not really sure how difficult it is. I think you do need a friend to help with this one tho.
Much better than the 16 inch 1800mm f/4,4 Orion ?
The optics did seem a bit better than my 16" but not by much. But 4" does make a difference in magnitude for sure. Hard to tell. Hopefully they will have these at Texas Star Party again this year. If they do, I'll be doing a more in depth video.
I like to buy it and i really want it deliver to Malaysia
What Realy that cost arpund 13k even up 22k ringgit that you budget pretty sick
If want dobsonian i sure 16 inch was good but cost like rm8k
If want cheap.dobsonian better view deep sky object 12 inch or 10 inch
300 mm dobson build out of a 300/1500 PDS skywatcher: ruclips.net/video/mcTPAftXxKU/видео.html
Anyone can review the 10inch ES truss dob
I have a video on the 16" and the performance should be pretty close. I do plan to do another video on that in the near future.
what are those 5 squares under the eyepiece?
Lawrence Mok those are the elements that make a 3D image.
I thought those things didn't come with go to computers? Which model is this?
The 20” from Skywatcher has the same sort of hand controller a EQ mount has and it has 10’s of thousands of objects in the database. From my understanding these are no longer sold in the US.
What kind of views could one expect from a scope this size, lets say of Andromeda or Orion Nebula?
Both M31 and M42 are absolutely stunning in this scope. You can see thousands of objects easily with these things. 20 inches is a lot of scope!
@@DeepSkyDude Wow very nice! I had an Orion 10" dob and was blown off my feet with the views it provided. And that was with the factory eyepieces. Before that I only seen the universe through a cheap Kmart telescope lol. I think gonna go ahead and pull the trigger on one of these in 5-6 months. Been reading a lot of reviews on them and they seem pretty good from what I hear. Also what brand eyepieces would you recommend other than TeleVue, that would go nicely with a scope like this? Thanks man! 🍻
@@BBL_Drizzy91 I think Explore Scientific has amazing eyepieces. Their 82 degree line is fantastic for the money.
Howie Glatter was everywhere.
Ric Crawford indeed he was.
How much? Where to order?
I don’t think they sell this one in the US anymore. Not sure who has them to be honest.
Lighter the telescope, the easier it flips over in wind! LOL!
Do they?
This telescope too big to my house )
and how much does this aluminium tent poles and reflective glass set up cost ? LOL , whatever it s it's wayyyy too much
guys i am confused why is the primary mirror not concave? it is suppose to be a concave mirror right? can somebody explain?
seng lat it is concave. I think maybe it's just hard to see the curve on the camera.
Deep Sky Dude i was also thinking the same thing i wasn't sure enough tho thank you for your reply😀
Put down the phones for a moment and look at the cosmos🌌🌌🌌🌌🌌😌
Costs $9399 AUD
i cri
IMAGES!!!
What the heck are these dudes talking about?
Talking shop.
20"-er $8k? Ouch!!!
szaki it’s actually not a bad price for the size if you compare it with other brands. However, the quality between this one and say an Obsession 22” are pretty different. An Obsession 22” with all the bells and whistles will run you about $14,000. That old saying is true tho. You get what ya pay for. 😎
Друзья давайте дадим оценку этому телескопу! Помоему отлично!!!
jesus christ that's massive
Andr0meda have to take the lords name in vain?
must be nice to have 8 grand for a scope hahhaa
Too bad. Never saw example pictures or videos of the stars or moon or whatever. So, I will stick with Newtonian.
Milan Karakas I didn’t get any night shots because they simply won’t show up on camera as they do to your eye. There is never a moon at a major star party. We only have those during new moon. Also, this scope IS a Newtonian. lol.
Newtonian. Ah, okay. Look pretty much like Dobsonian. Thanks.
Milan Karakas Well it is a dobsonian. Dobsonians are Newtonian reflectors on an Altitude and Azimuth mount. John Dobson was a genius who changed the world. :)
Yes, I saw some of his work. He wanted to make things simple and easy. AA mount is okay if magnification is not high, and if camera is intended to be used. Currently I am completing my first equatorial mount, waiting for tripod, and considering to buy some nice telescope. Telephoto lens I am currently using is not the sharpest one and has lot of chromatic aberration. I am just observing that many people having Dobsonian type of mount are reluctant to make videos or photos from the telescope. John Dobson said in one TV interview that he never used and never had the camera. I know that it is more fun and exciting to watch live view through the telescope, but also I want to capture videos and photos of such observations and share with others. Sometime I am tempted to grind and polish my own mirror, at least one for solar observation as Mr. Dobson did - just parabolic mirror without aluminum coating and fancy secondary mirror which in the same time serves for light attenuation for strong solar flux. Maybe at some point I will make it.
I am still searching for YT video that shows how view through such telescope looks like. But so far no luck.
Ultra compact sounds kinda funny... It's more like ultra hollow and empty... I consider max cass scopes as compact not dobs
