Pretty generous fairways and short rough for a U.S. Open.

And yet the lead only improved by 2 shots over the last 3 rounds and certainly played like a US Open course over the last 3 rounds. The first round scores were an anomaly given the weather conditions and the USGA being cautious in the course set-up given that they had no prior experience with this course.
The fairways played exactly as the course architect intended them to play. There is a ton of slope on LACC-North’s fairways which means the fairways play much narrower than their nominal width. On the widest fairways, a drive landing in the middle of the fairway will bound sideways into the rough based on the slope of the fairway. The 13th fairway is the best example of this, as the fairway is 60 yards wide but slopes severely from left to right. Any tee shot that doesn’t land on a 15-18 yard wide slot on the left side of that fairway will roll off the right side of the fairway into the rough leaving a completely blind shot to the green from brutal rough.
The rough is bermuda grass, which is not usual for an US Open course. If you have ever played on bermuda, you would know how difficult it is to hit out of bermuda rough, as 3” of bermuda is harder to hit out of than 6” of any other type of rough, especially if the ball nestles down. Shots out of the rough were certainly not sticking on the greens during the last 3 rounds after the USGA was able to firm the greens up. Shots out of the rough held on the greens to a greater extent in the first round due to weather conditions softening the greens significantly.
