  • Hindustani vocal performance of Raag Bhimpalasi by Pandit D.V. Paluskar.
D.V. Paluskar was born in Kurundwad a small village near Kolhapur, Maharashtra to well-known Hindustani musician Vishnu Digambar Paluskar. He was only ten years old when his father died, and was subsequently trained by Pandit Vinayakrao Patwardhan and Pandit Narayanrao Vyas. He was also trained by Pandit Chintamanrao Paluskar and Pandit Mirashi Buwa.

This is so wonderfully done but i am probably gonna get a lot of brickbats and I assure you that I am a very divergent and tolerant person but I can't help but say that personally I still think that Kishori Tai's "Rang so rang Milaye" in Bhimpalasi does something to you, takes you into the deepest corner of your soul.. It's no longer just about music because it transcends knowledge and form.. She is the ultimate "GanaSaraswati" who is that rare enlightened genius ..

hear ustad zamiruddin khan's version of this bandish on the itc website. its in more authentic punjabi than even paluskar or omkarnath can render. ( never mind modern bombay based singers).also sadarang is not invoked by zamiruddin. when folk compositions like this migrated south to bombay-poona etc not only were they garbled beyond recognition but sadarang invariably crept in. ( or 'sadaraoong' as it is pronounced in the dakkhin)

The voice belongs to Dattatreya Vishnu(DV) Paluskar, son of the legendary Vishnu Digamber (VD) Paluskar. I don't think we have too many recordings of Pt. VD Paluskar's singing. But he is credited with bringing respectability to Khayal singing. He also formalised its teaching by establishing Gandharva vidyalayas, Pt. Onkarnath Thakur, Pt. Narayan Rao Vyas,Pt. Vinayakrao Patwardhan were some of his disciples, if I am not mistaken. Some amongst them taught young Dattatreya after he lost his father. Unfortunately Pt. DV died at the age of 39 due to encephalitis
