I got a brand new '85 Quadsport when Suzuki first released it back in '84. That one looks like an '86 model.
    I'm a 3-wheeler devotee, BUT...I like the LT230 Quadsport. Always have.
Come to think of it, the only 4-wheelers I've ever owned (in a sea of 3-wheelers and dirt bikes) were Suzukis....that '85 Quadsport, an '88 LT250R Quadracer, and an '88 LT500R Quadzilla.

Cool video my friend. I have the exact 86 lt 230!!! It was given to me not running. Gave her some TLC, and now its pretty much bullet/kid proof. Carbon build up on both valves, on mine was a major issue. Got rid of that.....now it smokes no more and starts with a half kik. Good job man.

Ahhh the old LT230s and LT80. I worked for one of the countries largest Suzuki dealers before the internet era. We had 22 phone lines and we sold parts and accessories over the phone (nationwide by ads in the back of dirt bike and atv magazines) by looking them up on hand micro fische parts breakdowns. I still have part numbers committed to memory for some common things...lol... left crankcase covers (axle and swing arm bearings start to go...chain flies off breaks the sprocket guard off), stators, gaskets, reverse lever and shifter seals.... you gave me flashbacks... hahah Best way to start these is stand on it like you are riding it, fold the right peg up and kick straight down.

Also... That carb does NOT have a "choke". Instead it uses an 'enrichener' circuit. An enrichiner will ONLY work when the throttle is at idle position..... If you open the throttle-slide the vacuum is lost to the enrichener circuit hence reducing the additional fuel flow. (disabling the enrichener)

What you have there is a Suzuki LT230 Quad Sport. Possibly around a 1986 or earlier model. The manual version was the Quad Sport and the automatic was the Quad Runner which usually had an electric starter as well. There was also a 2 stroke version the Quad Racer. As long as you don't get the timing 180 degrees off you shouldn't have to much trouble getting it running providing the electrical system is ok. The one I had was identical to the one your working with and was an '86 model. It was near bullet proof mechanically and was reliable as can be. Seeing yours has brought back a lot of memories and if I could find another one I would snag it in an instant.

I used to have 3 of these mid 80s Suzuki LT230s every one of them broke that side cover at some point when the chain would come off. There was supposed to be another bold in that cover where you were digging but it gets ripped off by the chain. I ended up buying new covers and making guards out of 1/8x1 flat bar. Solved that problem. The decompression was operated by a hand lever that was on the left hand bar and pointed up above the clutch lever. It was like a bicycle hand brake lever. I never used it but all of mine had it. Those are awesome quads. They go forever and got a ton of power. Great find and good job getting it back to life.

      @atr0x213 5 лет назад

Same experience here - my dad took the engine to his shop and had the bolt hole welded up, cover repaired, and retapped. My decompression lever never worked properly, spent a lot of time pulling it up hills to push start it. Ended up selling it after a top-end rebuild didn't fix other problems it had.

You're right, you need one of us along when you go picking in those unlimited trash runs to help you get the things in the truck, and help get them out too. But you Really need your 16 yr. old self to come back and kick them over!(I do too, many times have said "getting to old for this") but man when they 1st start! It makes it all worth it. I do it a bit different, 1st take off the air cleaner assembly so I'm not dragging in half decicated mouse bodies and usually look into the intake, look into the combustion chamber, then the valves. Use a shot of PB Blaster, then some light sewing machine oil in the jug. Get them freed up, then check for spark etc.. All adds up to the same thing though, and glad to see it come back, those were good motors, especially if you find them quit on someone before they beat the crap out of them.

I bolted 2 alum plates to my left side swingarm spar, then bolted a MX bike chain guide to the plates, using spacers & washers to line up guide with chain ( it's not parallel to swingarm ) - now I'm confident that a pebble or stick won't derail my chain; & replace a worn out chain, you will get better performance & no worries about snapping.even if you have to put a new chain on old sprockets, it's still better

Do your self a favor the next time you kick it throw a leg over stand on the left peg and kick straight down with your heal. Compression release goes upwards on the top left handlebar. @Mustie1, decompressor should be used just to move the piston past TDC.
1- use the kickstarter to bring the piston in compression
2- use decompressor and move piston slightly past TDC
3- kick it hard (without decompressor).
This is a 230cc, so you might just kick it until it starts, (if you wear any sort of boot it would be much easier)

i bought a '85 lt 230 shaft at an auction a couple of weeks ago for $150, and you got one for free. mine ran at the auction for a couple of minutes, but when i got it home has no spark. i haven't looked at it since as i've been busy, but hopefully it will go without much work. it has a plow attachment on the front to push snow which is mostly why i bought it.

Never underestimate the influence of the airbox on the mixture.
I have a similar issue on my 1981 Suzuki GS250T, it has an oil soaked filter element, and without the airbox and filter in place the only way to get it to run is with a load of choke. The moment you touch the throttle she leans out and dies.

    Looks like a LT230SG. I had a 86 model.
Mine had blue seat, red fenders, black grill section, black headlight gaurd.
Broke the swingarm,(bought new one from Suzuki), replaced front sprocket with a bigger one, throwed the chain through the case. Bought a new side case cover, had the broken sidecase piece heliarced back in.
Was a good quad, rode it alot, lots of fun. Think it was about $1800 new in 1986, sold it 15 years later for $1200.

I had a Suzuki 230 fro 96-99 as my second for friends who didn’t have a quad to ride.
No clutch shifting was easy to teach. That having a clutch surprised me.
I had to put bearings in the rear axle.
That was causing my chain to fly off and bust my cover and I had to JB weld it too.
Mine was the lt230e which had pull and electric start. I think mine was a 91 model.
It would go a little over 50 mph on smooth flat ground.
When you get that going you will enjoy it.
    My lab loves water bottles.
