I'm loving this series on books! But my bank account is suffering! :) I would really appreciate it if you posted the author/title in the description box (and/or provide links).
I met Joel Meyerowitz briefly at The Photographer’s Gallery in London pre Covid. Coolest bloke I’ve ever encountered, he was totally at peace with himself. Love his work and intelligence.
Thanks for more great content…your teaching style and effort you apply to preparing for this video series is so well done…. I am a fan 👏. Outstanding work!
The importance of photography books in the social media age can't be overstated and it's good that you remind us. The trouble is, there's so many of them. These days with a limited budget I tend to concentrate on contemporary photographers (not necessarily household names) and I have a little list. The next three for example are by Giacomo Brunelli, Mark Power and Todd Hido. Sadly, this means that some heroes have to be sold on but I don't think that's a bad thing if you want to move your own photography forward.
Thank you so much for sharing that forgotten truth. Photography on paper, be it a Book, a print, is an much deeper experience, truly inspirational and ultimatly educational.
Great video as usual. I just ordered the Brooks Jensen book for Amazon Kindle. It took me about two minutes and cost less than $6. I’m looking forward to reading it.
Alex, great video because you have given people ideas of how the older generations did photography. I have gone through many transitions in my own photography and I now a hitch in my giddy for ducks on the water. Just took and made some great duck prints today.
I bought this book when you recommended it in another video, along with three other books. I was able to find all three and I bought all three. I am surprised and so happy that this book has so much useful information for adults... like I hope to be someday. I thank you for your transition to educator, as your focus, in these RUclips videos. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Cheers mate!
Hey, love the channel. Always gives me new inspiration. Could you please give me more info on the book "history of photography" Greetings to you all from Belgium.
Hi Alex, these books look like they can really inspire photographers especially Seeing Things from Joel Meyerowitz. I was impressed to hear that Joel Meyerowitz was generous with his Knowledge. When i first started photography i asked other photographers for advice and some of them said go to a photography School. Great video, thank you. 😃
Lol. When I looked up Meyerowitz's Seeing Things on Amazon, what did I see below the books info: Frequently bought together with the second book Alex mentions The History of Photography: An Overview.
just subscribed - great channel - would love to hear your thoughts on a personal journey with a particular book... Case in point, I knew NOTHING about photography in the early summer and then just immersed myself in all sorts of directions as an ongoing education. With particular books - when I discovered Diane Arbus's monograph - at first I was 'disturbed'. and over time 'intrigued', then 'obsessed', then finally 'what's the photo that's missing from reprints'!!! My personal journey with one book summarised. More of these great musings please.
Hey there Alex! I’m trying to find a certain Kodak photo book you had mentioned in a video but I don’t remember which one it was! It was in the video about contrasting g with shadows!
Thank you very much Alex for introducing such great books. I'd love to get Seeing Things for myself. That looks very interesting. Since I live in a not-well-known country at the moment, I'll see what I can do. The shipping cost will be more expensive that the book itself....
There are numerous channels I started following because I learned about being a better photographer, like Jordan Matter and his photo challenges, but his channel has lost its photographic edge. As a result of someone on 52frames mentioning your channel I started watching, and I love the things I learn from you, and the spotlights on other photographers. Keep up the good work, and I will be watching a long time.
Something I struggle with is keeping the vision in my head. I often have to stand still, take a breathe and fighting to hold the vision in my head. Maybe it is something to do with my adhd. But like for example poses when working with models. I can't keep the poses in my head. Something very annoying when I have to work with newer models that I can't keep the vision inside my head.

I've been wanting to start reading and collecting photobooks. But i'm having troubles starting out on which books i should buy cus my interests are so wide...
I've been trying to buy a copy of seeing things for over a year. No one has it in stock. I'm in the USA and can't get it. I teach 3rd and 4th graders photography and really want to show them.
A list of the book's names and their authors would be helpful. I can't seem to find "The History of Photography" or at least the version you've shown in this video. Thanks.
This is a listing for it on Abebooks - www.abebooks.com/9780240800417/HISTORY-PHOTOGRAPHY-Alma-Davenport-0240800419/plp i think if you search around a bit you'll find cheaper copies.
I want all those books, I do have a tendency to buy books/magazines then rarely read them but with this book ( The History of Photography ) I feel I could really learn from it, who is the Author please? As when I type it in Google it comes up with a million and one ( 1,580,000,000 actually ) books with the same title, as you can well imagine

I love The Photographer’s Eye and I have always wondered if there was a connection between the book and the channel. :-) A couple of other books I highly recommend: The Art of Photography: A Personal Approach to Artistic Expression by Bruce Barnbaum The Essence of Photography, 2nd Edition: Seeing and Creativity by Bruce Barnbaum Two books that get at what so many people are missing from their photography. The first is more aimed at beginners and the second is more advanced. But they are both about using a camera creatively, conceptually, and as a means of expression rather than merely of duplicating a scene.

Wow! The Sally Gall laundry images are just *amazing*! That's genius!
Agree totally with "Seeing things" has become my favourite photo book
Joel Meyerowitz is the best and most inspiring educator ever

Your observation applies to me.
I could use to know some more history of photography.
Loved his book Cape Light….met him once many years ago in Provincetown, Massachusetts
YES, i have that book as well and it may be my most valued, appreciated photo book. Joel M. Is my hero.
Thank you Alex for taking the time to make such inspiring content. I picked up the Joel Meyerowitz book at my local library and loved it! 👍
Fantastic!
Photobooks also increase in value, I have several from the 80s and 90s now out of print worth 10 times what I paid for them.

informative video
Thanks
Brooks Jensen's daily podcast is fantastic.. He also founded and runs Lens Work Magazine.
3:15 This image is scary, in a way dystopian. Very strong.
The History of Photography: An Overview is said to be "10 bucks". Not anywhere I can get it. Used copies are $70 CDN!
There was a copy available on Amazon for $10 when I made the video. It's possible it's been sold (along with all the other cheaper copies)

I bought the Meyerowitz book recently. Why should kids have all the fun? 😂😂
Found a Bruce Davidson photo book today in a charity shop. Only £1.50. Bargain. Think it is a catalogue book from a London gallery that sold prints.

Be careful for killer bees. Bees with a bad attitude.
What's with the salty video title? "Another video that isn’t about sharpness" ain't appealing
I'm having a 'moment' with YT. It'll pass, but thanks for watching
If it's not about sharpness, do you at least talk about bokeh?
touche! :D
