Becky, I live in SC where lots of peanuts are grown. I moved back here from Maryland many years ago with my granddaughters and wanted them to see how peanuts grew when I bought the peanuts seeds to grow them in the backyard. A gentleman that worked at the feed store who is a big time farmer who worked there just part time Told me that once the peanuts grew, and they flowered and began to droop over the plants, started flower and the flowers started to kind of point down that I was to drive my lawnmower, my riding mower or something over top of them or stomp them, walk on them and stomp them into the ground and then after that, give them a generous coating of lime in order to produce peanuts in the soil if they don’t droop or lay down on the soil, well they will not go into the soil. The flowers will not go into the soil and produce the peanuts so I just wanted you to be aware of this in the event you were not. I wanted your harvest be a great success for you. The girls loved it. We had lots of peanuts. I thought he had lost his mind when he told me to walk on my peanuts and then coat them with lime, but he knew exactly what he was talking about being an old farmer from the deep south and he grew lots and lots of peanuts.

I doubt they would do well here in northeast ohio. Not a long enough warm season. A shame because i would love to grow them here. I may try anyway lol. Any recommendations of a cold hardy variety if such a thing exists?

Hardy Valencia might work if you could start them indoors to get a jump start. 😃 and maybe use a frost blanket. How many frost free days do you have?

What did the numbers mean on the acid mix fertilizer and cotton seed meal? I am an aspiring peanut farmer in my backyard and trying to do some research.

Hi Becky! My name is Jeff, from Louisiana. I'm in zone 9B. It is veryyy sunny here. I have lots of questions if I may?
    Ok so..
1.. does the skin on raw peanuts stay on better than whenever they are roasted? I'm trying to get into growing them, and I'm a little nervous about buying some raw peanuts, taking the shell off to get at the seeds, and messing it all up because the skin falls off super easy. I know roasted peanuts the skin comes off without you even trying to get it off.
2.. what's your thought about treating the seeds and/or the soil with Rhizobium? I have read that this is an almost necessary thing to add to make sure you get a successful crop with peanuts.
3.. what about root developing Mycorrhizae soil additives like "Great White" ? I have used this stuff on pretty much everything I can grow and it makes the plants just explode in growth! It can make the root mass and expansion of any plant that you can think of, to just go boom! I wonder if increasing the root mass and size of the peanut plant will help with peanut growth? I'm kinda leaning more towards yes on this one. But would like to hear what you think about it. I know it would most definitelyyy increase the size and vigor of the plant itself that's for sure.
4.. if I am taking the seeds out of the shell for planting, should I make sure that the soil stays wet.. at least during the first part of germination, or should I let it have some dry days? I'm guessing that it probably wouldn't be wise to let the soil turn to dry dust in at least the germination phase.
    And lastly
5.. what is the seed company that you get your Tennessee red peanut seeds from?
Thank you SO so much for any and all help you can throw my way! I very much appreciate it!
    ~Jeff 😀

Can I grow peanuts in planters easily? I rent the place I live so can't really mess with the ground. If I try planting peanuts it'll be my first time growing anything so I'm starting from 0 knowledge.

The container would have to be fairly large. 2 -3 ft across so the plant can lay over and allow the pegs to touch the soil. 😌

My guess is that would be over watering & not letting them cure at the end of the season.
