I saw his first show. I was a year old. I thought of The Captain as a third parent. I continue to love him and what he stood for. He had a lot to do with me becoming an educator.
I didn't see the first show, but my sister did. I came home from Second Grade and my younger sister said there was a new show on television. Something about a farmer with green jeans.
Born in 1957, grew up watching the captain in the early 60's. Then, as a photojournalist in 1986, got an assignment to photograph him during a children's library speech he gave in our area. I'm waiting at the bottom of a side stairway for him to approach the stage when I hear footsteps coming down the stairs behind me. I glance back and it's HIM! All by himself with is notes. My mouth drops open like”do you know who you are?” Type of look, but we started to chat, I tried to recite all the characters from his show and when I got stuck on Tom Terrific, he says “Now come one, you can do it.” I nearly peed myself. He was a genuinely nice person. My only regret from our encounter is I did not get a picture of us together.
Before there was the wonderful Mr. Rogers, there was his equally wonderful "father," Captain Kangaroo (Bob Keeshan). LOVED his show when I was in elementary school!!
I remember watching him on TV before I started grade school, before kindergarten even. So that would have been 1962, when I was 4 years old. It is the only show I can remember watching at that age. I think I watched it every day for a year or so. I remember the farmer guy too. So it has fond memories for me.
Will always love and remember this man and Hugh Brannum, Mr. Green Jeans. Grew up with them in the 60's and am delighted to be able to watch them on RUclips and reminisce fondly. Rest in peace gentleman, you will always be missed!
This used to be my favourite in the 60s,I am definitely go out and buy the book,my brother and I loved the show along with the bozo show. Thank you for a fun entertaining show. Be blessed.
I grew up with him all through the 1970's(born in 1968).He did a 3 day special during the Bicenntenial during July 1976.I also remember the moon song showing a film of the lunar module in lunar orbit
The Captain helped develop my love for reading. The stories I have strongest memories of are Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, Curious George and Harry the Dirty Dog.
Did you catch, when he mentioned Mr. Moose, how he flinched and looked up, as if expecting the ping pong balls to come raining down? These were my best friends in my preschool years, 67 - 69.
The last time I saw Bob Keeshan was in 1997, when he appeared as the Wizard in the St. Louis Muny Opera production of "The Wizard of Oz". The production itself was as amateur as a high school play, but Keeshan alone made the whole experience worthwhile. You couldn't have cast a better wizard.
One of my very few celebrity encounters was with Bob Keeshan. My family and I were staying at a hotel while visiting my sister, who was in college. The hotel was 2 stories, and the second story had a staircase that provided direct access to the parking lot. I was about 10 at the time, going down those stairs, and Bob Keeshan came down behind me, going down the stairs as fast as he could, nearly knocking me down. I assume he was in a hurry to get to an engagement of some time. I did grab hold of the stair railing and didn't fall, but my mother was a bit upset that this large man never saw her little boy and kept going. It was only as he was going by that we realized it was Captain Kangaroo himself.
I meet the Captain at that borders bookstore in Levittown NY just like he said. What a sweet and gentle man!! Rest In Peace Captain! You will always be remembered!! If anybody wants to hear the original music to his show, here it is. As long as you tube keeps it up. Enjoy, again.. ruclips.net/video/6Wy73UYbNrs/видео.html
There was another show that Bob Keeshan created for CBS that seldom gets mentioned anymore, probably because it was short-lived. Does anyone remember "Mr. Mayor". Keeshan was the title character and as I remember it had a variety of regular characters as well.
JoCo Comer : I own the suit that Bob Keeshan wore in the role of 'Mister Mayor', along with some original publicity photos. Feel free to join the 'Mr.Mayor' page on Facebook, which I moderate.
I've got many memories of Mr.Mayor on Saturday morning. That was where Keeshan first did the Town Clown(I think).I remember Miss Melissa,Auntie Maude,Dennis,Rollo the Hippopotamus-and boy do I remember the other skit The Homans,a crazy mixed-up family. I wish sometime I could get an old Mister Mayor show here on You Tube,as I got old Capt.Kangaroo shows.
One of the things the Captain pulled from his pocket was a pastel and refreshed version of a rebranded wallpaper cleaner. Because the owner offered him partial ownership in that company,. the profit permitted the Captain complete freedom from early television financial restraints. It provided more income than even his network salary. Mr. Moose always seemed to be around when the Captain did an entire segment on Play-doh.
That would had been nice.mr. moose could be vp!but I don't think Bob would had been interested in being the presidential many crooks in Washington. And they would not be able to control him.i think he would be doing a lot to help the country and its people including the kids. He would get rid of the junk we have on tv today and put the right programs back on like they should be.its a nice thought though.
They WERE going to bring the show back, had a bunch of affiliates lined up, but ICM had the rights to "Captain Kangaroo" and wouldn't allow it for reasons unknown. Thanks for NOTHING, ICM...
Icm was as stupid as CBS was,Bob knew what he was doing to have a great kids show on tv.but the networks prefer to show everyone of us nothing but junk now.
There were many people who were on for a few years here or there whom he didn't mention by name. I watched Captain Kangaroo in the 1960s, so I didn't even know who you were talking about.
There has been a long-believed rumor that Bob Keeshan was with actor Lee Marvin fighting in WWIIat Iwo Jima. Lee Marvin made that up. Bob Keeshan enlisted when he turned 18 in 1945. WWII was ending in 1945, which may have been a blessing in disguise for this actor, since he never had to face combat. We would have lost another great man without ever knowing what he could do for children. He would never have played Clarabelle from Howdy Doody or Captain Kangaroo. Bob Keeshan (Captain Kangaroo) Was a Fraud - RUclips
“The American Family needs this type of programming” Bob Keeshan Captain Kangaroo. DO WE EVER NEED IT NOW! 2023! Please bring back the sanity of letting children be children.
Also, why did she mention about the New Captain Kangaroo Show at 2:46 without even mentioning that it was being produced by Saban Entertainment, the same people behind Power Rangers? If my memory serves me, I think they had at first invited Bob to offer his input, but then they had later kicked him out. From what I once read on his take on Saban (and I quote) "They could do a fine program, but I don't know. It's just that I've never seen them do a quality program."
FUN BOOK, GREAT MEMORIES. Too bad such shows like CK are so few and far between--never really cared for Sesame Street--too lame and predictable. Oh well, at least the Captain and his crew had WAY more action, MORE comedy, MORE variety but also VERY clean cut, politically incorrect but nothing at all nasty or vulgar. Ah, how I miss the 70's, whether it was educational (CK, CBS Children's Film Festival, Schoolhouse Rock) or network (Banana Splits, Krofft Supershow, Scooby-Doo). Such good times ;-)
WOW, leave it to Saban to trash an American institution (the New CK Show only lasted just ONE season) while the rest of America just goes about Power Rangers that "It's all just a perfect natural part of growing up."
Captain Kangaroo was a huge part of my childhood. I miss how simple things were then.
Big time....
Him,& Mr.Rogers.
@@bigroy38 Bob Keeshan was a narrator in the CBS Storybreak Series wasn't he.
Bob Keeshan was such a sincere nice man. Loved his show growing up.
Here is his theme song. Enjoy. ruclips.net/video/6Wy73UYbNrs/видео.html
Bob Keeshan provided an invaluable service to children everywhere. He was a treasure. ❤️
I saw his first show. I was a year old. I thought of The Captain as a third parent. I continue to love him and what he stood for. He had a lot to do with me becoming an educator.
I was four. I remember it so clearly. It was a show for us kids.
+Jo Barrett Do you remember anything else that well from that age?
Only my Granddaddy. I was a little older because we didn't have a tv until JFK died, but the Cpt. was part of our childhood from then on.
When Captain Kangaroo first came on I was almost 1,but I don't think I discovered his show until I was 3.
I didn't see the first show, but my sister did. I came home from Second Grade and my younger sister said there was a new show on television. Something about a farmer with green jeans.

I loved that show and can still hear the theme song in my head. Best show of my childhood. Thank You Captain for the memories.

He was the first (and only) adult to read to me from a book.
Bob Keeshan was dedicated to his show-and this would please even oldsters like me!:-)
I love that show as a child
May God Bless his sole, what great memories.
This used to be my favourite in the 60s,I am definitely go out and buy the book,my brother and I loved the show along with the bozo show. Thank you for a fun entertaining show. Be blessed.

Always tried fitting in watching that show every time back then :D
....I just LOVE Captain Kangaroo, Bob Keeshan is the last of the Mahicans....thank for every single memory Captain!
Well done,Captain...
Is it just me or does Bob look way better, hip and younger here in 1996 than he did when his show ended in 1984, years earlier. Miss you Captain
He lost weight it looks like
He had lots of make up on to look the part he said. He said he was 28 when the show started.
I grew up with him all through the 1970's(born in 1968).He did a 3 day special during the Bicenntenial during July 1976.I also remember the moon song showing a film of the lunar module in lunar orbit
"Yesterday's children"--a great thought. I was one of those. Watching the Captain before walking to school aided digestion.
I see the garbage my grandsons watch today and feel blessed to have grown up with the Captain
4:38 - Who also doesn't miss Border's Books in Levittown?
I remember this show. I liked Mr. Green Jeans..... I had a pair too....
The Captain helped develop my love for reading. The stories I have strongest memories of are Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, Curious George and Harry the Dirty Dog.
I remember watching Captain Kangaroo in the late 1960s. Looking back, this show never insulted the intelligence of children. It was fun and gentle.
I remember Bob Keeshan hosting Storybreak, RIP Bob Keeshan.
Did you catch, when he mentioned Mr. Moose, how he flinched and looked up, as if expecting the ping pong balls to come raining down? These were my best friends in my preschool years, 67 - 69.
Capt. Kangaroo a great American icon.

I never watched CK, a bit young, but just watched a show, he hasn't changed a bit.😀
That's because he had the foresight to make the Captain an older character when he started as a young nan.

At the time he died, it was noted that he taped two different programs each day... one for the Eastern viewers, and the 2nd for Midwesterners.
Lee Marvin said The Captain had Brass Balls. Hero if there's ever been one.
Not true. That is an urban legend.

He played lead guitar for Ozzie Osbourne back in the day.

Wow, he did this interview after his wife had died in February if the same year.

It seems very weird that the news staff "massacre" happened the night before this clip.

*Sighs* Who are we gonna drop Ping-Pong balls on now?
Is mr.moose near by!?
This was the day after John Johnson and Michele Marsh were unexpectedly fired from Channel 2
