I had a Nikon D1x for a long time. It was an amazing camera. There is nothing at all wrong with these cameras.

Can't beat the old Pro Nikon bodies. Have a few and still use them. I just picked up a very minty D 2X for $42 Canadian. Just over 32,000 actuations.

Love how you show it's not just about the cost of the gear, it's knowing how to use it, the old adage, 'There's no such thing as a bad lens' also works for Cameras as well IMHO, if you know how to use it, being a good Photographer is about more than owning gear. Nice Video.

Thanks again! Agree 100 percent. Chasing gear won't do anything for your photography 👍👌

Check out the "Non-CPU lens" tab in Settings. I think you can manually set the max aperture and the focal length, so the camera can use that information...

For daylight stuff that doesn't move too fast old Nikons are great. I loved my D60 and the kit lens - regret swapping it for a more complicated model. No motor built in so manual mode for the older lenses. Nikon has great natural color reproduction and great sensors and kit lenses on their entry level stuff. Looking throught the viewfinder of an SLR is a much more intimate experience with photography than a phone or point and shoot can ever provide.

Great video! Funny - I picked up a pristine D1X a month ago for $80, including a modestly functioning battery and charger. The few test shots I’ve made have been amazing! Can’t wait to take it out for real.

$80! The fun to dollar ratio is crazy good with these old pro body digital cameras. You'll have fun with that for sure 🍻👍

What a trip to the wild you had. Makes me want to get my camera stuff out of the drawers and cases and use them. My stuff is mostly from the 70's and 80's.

Hey Jimmy, just watched this video, and as usual, another awesome work of art! Really fun to watch you find these "old" things and make them alive. Hard to believe that camera produced such great pictures, those ducks and owls were just amazing shots and rivals modern cameras. Definitely enjoyed watching this video!

Don't know how you do it? Incredibly deep and informative. Secrets and a lot of knowledge you have Padawan! 😄 Your eye has a lot of heart, but your heart is never ending and it shows with this video. So many levels here, one can't, can't watch and listen to it just one time and absorb it all! I think the only thing I was left wanting or wondering if you were going to surprise us with was a "Way Of Water" trailer for an underwater adventure in the realm of paradise you have shared with us thus far! Air, land, and the sea is next! Space is yet to come! LOL! What an adventure! Live long and prosper! Thank you!

Okay!!! First I just bought myself a used D2xs because I love vintage digital dslr cameras so I’ve been watching all the videos I can on anything related and I found your video extremely cool, than boom I see your photo samples and Sharples and carbon pop up! I’m floored to see my two favourite locations, are you local to Alberta?

In the video ik looks that the lens you are using is Manual focus lens without cpu chip. Don't forget to use Non-CPU in the Nikon Dslr. Then you can use Aperture prio. With MF lens aperture only works when you change this on the lens. The dial command does not work. But the camera recognise the aperture. When adding a CPU chip to the lens with glue then Program mode and Shutter mode also works. ☺

I have a decent collection of Nikon and Olympus DSLR gear (11 bodies, all different models). The D1 has the singular problem of the battery. Needing to either rebuild yours, or hope to find a decent enough one in the aftermarket, is a real headache. That being said, I wish I had kept mine, but I actually gave it to a friend who was just getting started in photography, after I put all the time and effort into rebuilding the two batteries myself. The D2H is basically its direct successor, but I actually never found one for a decent price that wasn't beat up.
The D100, D200, D2, D3, are a practical choices for this reason, and you can have them for a comparable amount of money (except the D3, which will still fetch a few hundred dollars).
Shooting old gear is fun, because it keeps you thinking and working. I have an old Olympus E-10 that I got brand new for my 18th birthday (hell of a birthday present back then). I will still take it out on occasion because it's a lot more challenging to have to compose a good picture within 2256x1692 than it is with the roughly tripling of those figures on my D850. Then you have the buffer limitation (4 shots any type, clearing at 1.2 MB/sec with JPG and 2.7 with ORF raw (I have no explanation for the different speeds, having done this test numerous times with different cards and reaching the same result). Then there's the low sensitivity (80, 160 are realistic, 320 is pushing it), where even my D100 base ISO is 200.
I think everybody should use an old camera from time to time, keep them thinking about the basics and not subject or eye tracking AF.

We live in a golden era of cheap photography. Storage is cheaper and cheaper every year, and great software to recover images and clean the noise is available. The old DSLRs and lenses are dirt cheap and perfectly capable of great pictures.
I started photography within the pandemic, i hasn't be able to decide for a mirrorless system. Now I'm using a Nikon Z50, but I'll wait for the market to settle for at least a pair of years, I don't want to spend too much money until i could be confident about what I want, what I need and which is the best alternative to go with. Maybe Canon will open RF mount, or Nikon will have better entry and mid level, or Fuji will have only one mount. I don't know. But for now i started using old DSLRs, a Nikon D60, a Canon 9000D / 77D, and a Canon Rebel XS, with old lenses. EF and F (AF-S) lenses can be easily adapted with AF to Sony E, Nikon Z and Fuji FX. EF can be with RF and L mount. So a collection of lenses could be used in the future if needed. Old cheapo cameras have advantages in risky situations too, is less to lost.

Even though back in the day that camera was expensive but even now new cameras like that one is still expensive but I think for most of us people who are low income might be just okay with a point and shoot camera

Think in your head you watched a different Video....; ) It isnt broken and if I was a freshman into BIF Photography this Video is a dream, $80 for 4mb, eight frames per second for up to 40 frames (five seconds of continuous shooting at 8 fps), Super Focusing System, Spot and Matrix Metering, use it with any AI Nikkor MF Lens, plus any AF Lens, Spot Metering linked to focusing system, Full iTTL FLash - CLS, easy to power, (Urgh the dreaded D1) throw in a few years of practice ; ) and you're away, very helpful indeed.
