Your dye and finish videos are actually really relevant to my interests as I'm an orthopedic shoemaker and out of the three workplaces I've been employed at over the years only my current one cares about aesthetic. The horrors I have seen at my first workplace... Yes, we did take off finish and pigment with acetone but redyed with what was basically latex based sole finishing liquid, absolutely disgusting looking. Recently your burnishing tutorial helped me to put a really nice touch on one of my favorite pairs that I have ever created for a customer, so thank you for that as well!
Thanks for the tutorial, I just finished dying my very light tan suede shoes into a warm chocolate brown and they came out perfectly. The heads up on making sure we have enough dye was critical when ordering as I did need some of the second bottle to complete the job. Cheers!
what color dye did you buy to "chocolate" color? I checked saphir website and Amazon and there is only Light, Medium, and Dark Brown then mahogany and Havana. Was it Medium that comes out as chocolate-y? The video doesn't mention which specific color dye.
This is awesome. There are a few suede shoes I found that I love everything but the color and now i can just customize it by dyeing it myself. Thanks for sharing this video, and your knowledge
This is just what I needed! I found some gorgeous suede shoes at a thrift store that where in incredibly good condition and I just couldn’t pass them up, even though I’m not the biggest fan of the color (a light tan). I figured, why not just dye them myself? This video was so helpful and calming. I feel really confident now in being able to dye my shoes. ☺️
@@michaelnichols8757 It can dye the soles and welts if they're leather, so it's best to mask them off with tape like he did the interior of the upper. And it very well might dye the metal, depending on the type of dye (a lot of artists use alcohol-based inks on metal). If you're at all concerned about keeping the metal pristine, or if the metal has scratches or other signs of wear where dye could get trapped, you can always apply a bit of wax to them, or paint on some artist's masking fluid, aka frisket (a latex-based masking material that is easily and fairly cheaply found online or at art stores). It'll rub off easily with a finger or a rubber eraser once you're done. (I would NOT advise using frisket on the welt or sole, though, as it might settle into the stitches or iron marks and be a pain in the butt to remove).
I recently managed to find a pair of these in NOS condition and could love them more! I’ve always been nervous about wearing suede because I was concerned it wasn’t as durable as calf skin. Over the last couple of months, I’ve learned that isn’t necessarily the case with proper care. This isn’t at all different from calfskin, which benefits from some attention as well. Great video!
Beautiful! Again, I just luv ur work. Such a passion for ur profession. There r NOT many that I know of who carry that trait. Keep up the great work, and thank u for sharing!
Look at us. All dressed up and nowhere to go. Watching this video during a 2 hour break in lockdown and standing in a queue to get groceries. Keep uploading such fine videos to keep up our morale.
Sometimes I dress like I used to when I was going to work before the pandemic, just to feel normal. In those days I have higher productivity. My wife does the same and we dressed up just to go to the grocery’s store! I miss the days of walking along the shore and long dinner’s with friends and family. I regain courage thinking in those families that had losses for this horrible disease.
Preston, I left a pair of Loake suede shoes in my porch and the sun has bleached the mid green colour. I am going to follow your advice and recolour them. Thanks for the advice.
Thank you! This was a very helpful and encouraging video, since this was my first time dying a pair of shoes. I would add the you should ensure good ventilation and make sure to finish the process with a protective suede spray.
Sitting here... Learning about dyeing some suede Sperry Gold shoes I scored for $20... Then you mention Temecula. Literally just moved from there 3 months ago to the bay area. Seeing how big of a pain in the A it is get decent dyes in California, I would've been MORE than happy to hop in my car right meow to grab some dye.
How would you handle not newly bought suede shoes? I got an 3 year old pair I want to dye but I am unsure what I should do as preprocess? Renomat? Saddle soap? Suede cleaner? Aceton? Please help!
I used a waterproofing spray on a pair of suede shoes that I'd now like to dye a darker color. I assume the waterproofing might prevent the dye from adhering properly. Any tips?
Very cool project for my new Strand sneakers I just got. I'm loving them more every day, they are very comfortable and a nice break for wearing leather shoes every day, but the bright orangy turmeric is really starting to hurt my eyes, so I think I'm going with the dark chocolate or maybe a plum color. I'll see what I decide in the end. Wish me luck.
Great video, there’s a pair of Thursday’ boots that don’t come in the colour I want. I’ll give this a shot. Side note I think they play this music in my local floatation room lol. Brings back memories 😊
Just finished dying my shoes, but I put more dye in some areas more than others becase they were hard to get to, how to you ensure it's evenly dyed, or does it matter too much?
I dyed a pair of brogues just like these using the same product but as I was going for a very dark brown, I might have overdone the vamp or it just takes dye better, it's almost black now and a bit shiny, is there a way to turn it down a notch and remove a bit of the dye? Do you think Decapant could take just a slight layer of dye away without having to redye them?
You are the best! I have an olive pair of suede To Boot NY boots that I bought almost 20 years ago that I spilled bleach on and couldn’t find olive dye. Mixing yellow and black? Genius!! Thanks!
I'm so jealous, I took a look but they only had narrow widths left! 150 is such a steal 👍 Edit: Just finished the video, great job! It's funny, I've been looking for a pair in the honey color that these were originally, and I do have a pair of loafers in the chocolate brown that you dyed these to. 😂
HI, PRESTON!!! YAAAAAÀASS!!! Those are beautiful shoes! I do love those chocolate Strands!!! Hey, Preston and Juana...I WALKED! 😂 On my prosthetics proofs! I get MY legs on Monday, if all goes well! It's been a long year losing both legs since March 2019. Just wanted to give you an update! I'll have a Lady's version of nice shoes one day. 🎩 💋Baby Z!
I love what you've done here, but they look to me like they need a second coat of dye. I have done exactly the same with a couple of pairs of brown suede, and I found that two light coats are better than one heavier coat.
I'm looking to do this to restore a suede bike saddle. Can you share anything on if this type of paint stains at all after drying? I would like to prevent a large brown spot on my paints after riding the bike...
Very interesting vídeo; I bought a John Lobb light brown suede on e-bay; the shoes are great, but the color needs to be retouched. I always wanted to dye these shoes using a brown color. You are an expert and I wanted to know if you could do it for me. If you can’t, i understand; however I would like to know what exactly I need to buy and where. One other thing, I bought a brand new Thursday’s boots, they are the a mayor in color cuero; I was trying to clean the shoes with saddle soap, but the actual color came right off. I only did it to one of them, I pit leather conditioner, the color is better now, but it looks different than the original, I am not happy with it, I was wondering if I could send them to you, I think it will be easier to dye the boots in a darker color, such as burgundy or ox blood with a little bit of black patina in the cap-toe of the boots. I am not in a rush, you can take your time. I think you could really make a nice video with this transformation. I have the original box and could ship them to you if you have the time. Hi, thanx for your amazing videos but I haven't seen any video where you have restored a suede shoe or a suede shoe which has creases or is dirty. I would be very nice to see that too, thank you

I don't know, but in my opinion, it looks darker. Maybe if you wait a month or so, and then re-dye them together using the same ink in both, maybe you can get an even color in both.

I ordered the AE strands in blue after hearing you say the sale was a good deal. They're coming today. They're my first AE's.

I found a bargain on some wonderful white suede Orleans. Seems like the perfect blank canvas for my first dye project.
Is it possible to use the dye on a suede jacket? Found a tan suede jacket I like, but would ideally like it to be a bit darker
Did you spray them with anything after dyeing???
The cotton bud in a stick where did you get that from? The little brush that came with my dye doesn't look good. Thanks for demo.
Is the process the same for changing for nubuck shoes as well
