  • The Raspberry Pi 4 is very versatile. Among is many talents is the ability to forward network traffic from one network interface to another. In this video I will show you how to create a router between two wired Ethernet networks and how to make a Wi-Fi router.

    I'd be interested about the performance of the RPi as a router - like ping times or download / upload rates of things connected via the RPi. I'm using my linux PC as a router in much the same way as you're using the RPi there except with more ethernet ports added via PCIe - it's basically my own personal router plugged into my landlord's router. I should maybe see if my RPi can give me a lower energy option to keep my WiFi on when I don't need to use my PC. I'd be concerned that the RPi would be slower but if it's not a lot slower I could maybe have always on WiFi without burning too much energy. Thanks for the idea.
    On another point, I don't see that routine and roulette say anything about how to pronounce router. Think of the pronunciation of the 'ough' in tough, though, through and thorough. English pronunciation simply isn't consistent even within one style of English (like British English or American English). I know that you didn't claim that anybody was right or wrong in their pronunciation of router, but maybe you could have stopped after acknowledging the difference and saying that you prefer to use the British style. There wasn't a need to try to justify it. It's comes across as making an attempt to persuade (aka an argument). I speak British English btw, so I say this despite naturally preferring your choice of pronunciation.

    • @lahmyaj
      @lahmyaj Год назад

      Lol I say it the American way and I’m Australian (which traditionally follows British English but the American cultural influence is so much stronger nowadays here I reckon).
      It’s also one of those words though that tend to follow industry-language as opposed to cultural language. A lot of our networking education is US company Cisco-made too.

    that's kind of what i want to do. ideally i wanted to be able to add a hat of some description to give me 4 gig lans so i could skip having to use a switch. unfortunately i couldn't find one. im in two minds about scaling down what i want to do and doing what you said in this vid, or putting together a small pc and putting a nic with 4 gig ports on it which would require more power, but i could do a lot more and have the option to add more 4 port gig lan cards, which would be nice, not that i need that at present. though i can see a need for it if i fully network the house the way i'm concidering.

    Afaik, you only need one physical port. In the late 90ies, I had a modem and a network-card in the main PC, and used it as Router. A switch was connected to the NC and the modem on the COM-Port.
    For routing, (Route66 is pronounced like root, isn't it?), I connected the eth0-Port twice:
    sudo ifconfig eth0:1 192.168.2.1 up
    sudo ifconfig eth0:0 192.168.3.2 up
    This year, I will try it with the Raspi and WLAN, since my mother doesn't have Internet connection, but there is a public hotspot nearby. Maybe I can connect not only the Pi, but my Laptop, the Smartphone and the equipment of my sister to it. :)
    Well, since the hotspot only serves 2h of internet per day per User (maybe identifying by HW-addr., maybe by cookies - didn't find out by now), I will probably use an UMTS-Stick for uplink, additionally.

    You actually said the truth instructions on another web page thank you
    I honestly hate RUclips videos that say instructions below when the instructions are nowhere to be found but they are possibly on a web page that is linked and maybe being maintained or not aka 404 it is extremely frustrating

    It need a 4 way network switch hat to will fit the Raspberry Pi or possibly using the UDOO RYZEN Bolt V8 as it is more powerful than the Raspberry Pi you will also need a WAN port and is there such a thing as a WAN Hat for the Raspberry Pi.

    Good video Gary. Just one question, you thumbnail shows two Ethernet leads (one yellow and one blue) but the RPi4 only has one Ethernet port. Where does the second lead plug in to the RPi4?

    Why cant i ignore the whole eth1 interface on the whole. I wanted it to get a dynamic IP from ISP and be an AP to transmit them via WIFI. Just like a normal router does.. I'm not going to connect any device via ethernet interface. Any solutions will be helpful

    I don't understand why I can't get this service to work. There are two possible causes, I put a fixed IP or when installing Pihole.
    Some help?

    I already did this with my previous rpi 3, well technically it's doable even for pi zero, only it might be a bit slower. Great in the days where I only have wired internet.

    In English we have both pronunciations of Router. The one that "Gary Explains" sounds like Rooter and is used to Route (Root) network traffic and then there''s Router that is pronounced just like they do in the States but it takes a quarter inch bit and is used for shaping wood!

    How can we build/install pfsense on a pi4?

    • @zachgardner2927
      @zachgardner2927 4 года назад

      You can try writing it to an SD card using Balena Etcher, you can find it at www.balena.io/etcher
      Download, select your source and then select your target
      An alternative to Pfsense is Opnsense, you can find that at www.opnsense.org

    I will be short and straightforward:
    Is it possible to protect (other PCs that are connected to the internet through the pi) if the pi has a firewall, antivirus or any other sort of protection? Just curious since I'm currently using a pi as a router and it also has a firewall set up.
    Other than that... great video as always.

      Id like to know as well. Assuming you installed/enabled ufw on your pi router, does that protect the Pi's network? I will try it out, I have a spare hub and will comment on how I can validate this.

      @@reyarqueza7627 Well, I can answer to my own question right now:
      Yes, (whatever is connected to the pi with firewall, etc) will benefit from the additional security.
