      What DC has done, or Rather NOT DID- w/ the BLACKHAWKS mythology is A Sin !!!!!!!
      > Please, allow me to explain. Some of the Greatest Golden Age & Silver-age Villains sit there in A suspended animation like Limbo! AWESOME Villains like; Gas Master, Eel Madden, Death Mayhew, Killer Shark, the Org Black Widow, Baron Bllitz (or Blitzkreig), The Crimson Corsair, Kid Condor, Captain Hood, Red the Executioner, Madam Butterfly, Mind-Master, the Storm King, Overlord Supreme & who could ever forget the War Wheel !!! To name just A few .....
      If DC were smart- They would take The BLACKHAWKS & the Lovely Lady Blackhawk- Zinda (from Simone's BoP.) throw in some _"Red Tails"_ (Tuskegee airman) action. An you have A Great dynamic!
      Along w/ All those great Villains, add in alittle Time travel (noted below) and you have yourself A Blockbuster Movie trilogy!
      It's this simple DC @Warnerbros
      ________________
      The first movie starts introductory in WW1. You meet the BLACKHAWK patriarchy; 99% of which parish as Pt.1 (the 1st movie) ends.. Falling to the rise of Nazi occult magic! The initial movie secludes, while introducing Immortal like & somewhat super-powered Nazi's! E.g. Death Mayhew, Gas Master, Madam Butterfly & Baron Blitzkreig- following the rise of Overlord Supreme. Who worship the secret Inner-earth Vril-ya (where you get CrAZy Villains like Killer Shark, King Cobra & Negative Man).
      Pt.2 (the BLACKHAWKS sequel) is during the WW2 era. Where the Tuskegee airman come in w/ Zinda, They pick-up the Blackhawk mantle & creed. Taking the lead as the New BLACKHAWK Squadron! Forming under that BLACKHAWK sigil, they rise up as one & crushe the Nazi's !!!
      > Of course A few escape (like Hitler did in real life) during the Fall of Berlin. Yet these Evil survivors team w/ the remaining Vril Lords (the origin of the Occult magic) & escape into modern day in like A UFO time machine.
      Pt.3 (the 3rd Movie) is in modern times. Where THE time displaced BLACKHAWKS (who chased the Nazi UFO into the wormhole) our in the modern JLA timeline. Right alongside w/ your main DC Heroes Superman, Batman, Flash, Green Lantern etc.
      As the relic BLACKHAWKS amazed buy the modern world, search out to find & destroy the now rising 4th reich. But Little do they know, that in Modern times Decades had past (in the mere 30 Seconds that they were behind chasing the Evil UFO into the wormhole). & During those Years - mere seconds to the BLACKHAWKS - the Time traveling Nazi's had impregnated themselves into the American industrial military complex (like in real life, how Nazi science built NASA / see Project: // Op. Paperclip). An essentialy the Battle continues in modern times. Where the roles our somewhat reversed. Because The Time displaced & somewhat Super-Powerd Nazi's & Vril Lords don't quite stand out as the obvious evil, like they once did in the earlier 2 period piece movies.
      Intresting huh ?? Thus Flipping the Pt.3 dynamic on its head.
      You could even squeeze in A "Seven Soldiers of Victory" (see: JLoA 100-102) movie, having its occurence in between BLACKHAWKS 2 & 3. Adding even more of interesting character dynamic to A blockbuster BLACKHAWKS trilogy finale. Thus making the scripts over-all timeline now 4 Movies! If you wanted to do the JLoA 100 story that is..

    One of my favorites (in a "so bad that's he's... actually still pretty bad" way) that wasn't mentioned is Just'N'Right. He was a hero whose real name was Justin Wright. He assumed that nobody would ever make the connection between Justin Wright and the superhero named Just N Right. Oh, but he had the perfect disguise: he took one of his mother's scarfs and wrapped it around his face. And that's all he did to disguise himself.

    • @AvengerII
      @AvengerII 4 года назад +1

      DC had a Blackhawk comic for years after the acquisition. THey've been revived several times with the most famous revivals done by Howard Chaykin in the 1980s(?) as well as Lady Blackhawk being a supporting character in the early 2000s Birds of Prey comic book. They had appearances of the Blackhawks in 3 episodes of the Justice League/Unlimited animated series: a 2-parter that took place in a past where Vandal Savage took over the Third Reich (JL), and a later Justice League Unlimited episode where the Legion of Doom invaded Blackhawk Island to steal the Spear of Destiny.

    • @AvengerII
      @AvengerII 3 года назад

      I would agree that DC never did Plastic Man and Captain Marvel justice aside from the Monster Society of Evil mini by Jeff Smith but I haven't read enough Blackhawk. I only borrowed and read the one DC Archive from the library and it made no great impression on me. I've just never been a fan of war comics.
      I did like the appearances in the animated shows but am not surprised people don't care for most of the modern interpretations. There a lot of very far-left types in modern comics and they can't tell an entertaining story that isn't a critique on people to the right of Chairman Mao to save their lives.

    • @AvengerII
      @AvengerII 4 года назад +2

      The Spirit was NOT a Quality Comics character. He was always owned by Will Eisner; the Eisner State (managed by Denis Kitchen), still manages licensing of The Spirit. DC Comics never owned the character -- DC just managed and helped Kitchen restore and curate the original Spirit comic strips. DC had reprint rights for The Spirit even after they stopped creating original, new Spirit comics (under the DC Comics imprint) the best of which were the issues that Darwyn Cooke did. They did a "Red Label" DC Comics imprint of new Spirit stories but sales were awful and that got canceled quickly.
      In modern times, I think Darwyn Cooke is the only comic creator who really captured the feel of The Spirit. I wish they had adapted his Batman/Spirit crossover story into an animated film, it could have been very good and would have been a shot in the arm for the character after the disaster of the awful Frank Miller Spirit movie!
      The Spirit's been published or reprinted by Quality Comics, Kitchen Sink Press (defunct; Denis Kitchen's publishing company), Dark Horse, DC Comics, and most recently, Dynamite.
      *****
      ******
      Quality Comics just did reprints of the Spirit comic strips. The only original Spirit art for the Quality Comics would probably be the covers featuring The Spirit but the rest of The Spirit stories in those Quality Police Comics issues were reprints.
      Midnight, the Quality Comics Spirit clone/rip-off, was a Quality character. (DC owns Midnight but has done VERY LITTLE with the character. I think his last new appearance was in an All-Star Comics issue in the 1980s! I think not much has been done with Midnight at DC Comics out of respect for Will Eisner and acknowledgment of his ownership of The Spirit; Midnight is just too obvious a knock-off.) Midnight was created by Jack Cole because the Quality Comics editor/owner was afraid Will Eisner might get killed in a combat zone during World War II and that his company would lose original Spirit material. The funny thing is that Will Eisner later recruited Jack Cole to do artwork for The Spirit comic strip!
      I don't think Eisner held Midnight against Jack Cole. Eisner understood the comic book game -- there were an awful lot of "homages" back then and even Eisner was contracted to do his own take on Superman called "Wonder Man." I don't think Wonder Man's single issue has been reprinted to this day because of the DC Comics lawsuit. They sued that Superman knock-off out of existence after one issue! They were supposed to reprint the Wonder Man comic book in a Fantagraphics book about Golden Age superheroes over 10 years ago but I think DC Comics blocked it after they saw the solicitation for that book. I used to own that book and I wanted to read the Wonder Man comic. I'm sure it's up online somewhere now...

      I'd read about the Spirit and been mildly interested as a kid. Then at a low-grade comic convention, I saw one of the Warren magazine reprint jobs of the Spirit -- I think it was the second or third one with the Spirit facing off against some femme fatale character around a decrepit, chimney-sized building with some kid trapped in a barred cell built into it -- and fell in love with the stories within. Yes, I know, I know... Ebony is almost unforgivably stereotyped in his portrayal, but a shallow dismissal of a character that, at least in Will Eisner's hands, was a real person with a soul, interests, and relatability underneath.

    I was born in 1950, but I remember "Phantom Lady", especially her "Black Light" that caused several bad guys to crash their cars when they suddenly couldn't see. I also remember, but can't name, a comic about a fat kid who sucked lollipops. I might be confusing the multiple umbrellas belonging to The Penguin, but I believe his lollipops came with different abilities. Could his name have been "Herbie"? No clue who published these comic books, at that time, you bought your favorites, whoever made them, and pretty much ignored the rest unless a friend advised on that character. My all time favorite was Superman, as who didn't want to fly.

    When I first got into comics in the late 70s, I really liked the Freedom Fighters, where DC put several of the Quality comics characters into a super-group. I was a bit disappointed to find out that the FF were a 70s creation, and not a revival of a Golden Age super-team. Roy Thomas or someone should retroactively put the Freedom Fighters into the 1940s!
    And while I've not always been a fan of the revived characters, there has certainly been some great moments with Blackhawk and Plastic man at different times.

      They reprinted virtually all the Phantom Lady stories from the Golden Age of Comics in the PS Artbooks Phantom Lady Archives. I've got both archives in hardcover. They were available on the second-hand, used bookstores market for less than $20 a piece a few years back.
      Those PS Artbooks hardcovers reprint a lot of old, public domain comics from the 1940s and 1950s. Most of it IS forgettable but occasionally they have some gems that show up.
      I got the Phantom Lady books based on visual appeal. The stories are -- to be honest, I can't remember a SINGLE Phantom Lady storyline! LOL
      Yeah, the stories were mediocre at best. In and out... almost like a mindwipe! I have better memories of Marvel Comics I read in the 1980s than these Phantom Lady stories that I read less than 4 years ago!
      DC still owns the Phantom Lady character and trademark but failed to renew the copyrights on these stories in the 1960s and 1970s. By then, I bet hardly anybody remembered this character and most of these big companies have no idea of what all they own.
      I'd say well over half the Golden Age comics ever published are public domain now - that includes virtually every Quality and Fawcett comic ever published!
      Sad to say, even though they can't really stop reprints, DC owns these characters and you can bet they WOULD sue or be obnoxious if people don't get DC's permission before they do ANY kind of reprint -- especially with the Marvel Family characters, Plastic Man, Blackhawk. These are IP's they consider still have value. For 20 years, they've been talking about doing a Plastic Man movie.
      Quicksilver doesn't really exist anymore. The character got rebranded as Max Mercury in the early 1990s and while they kept the costume he's an utterly different charactet today. Of course, the reason they no longer call him "Quicksilver" is because Marvel owns that name was well as lot of Golden Age character names that fell into obscurity and weren't renewed when they had to be (Daredevil, Captain Marvel, and a ton of names Marvel Comics trademarked for their own characters in the 1960s).
      The Spirit really isn't a Quality character. Quality Comics just did reprints of the Will Eisner Spirit comic book specials and strips. The Spirit was always owned by Will Eisner and his Estate controls that now. DC had rights or still retains rights to do Spirit reprints but Dynamite does the new SPirit comics now. Those comics must not be selling well, though. I got a $40 reprint volume of a collection of Dynamite Spirit comics for $10 yesterday! But then again, a LOT of trade collections and hardcovers of comic books are on firesale right now if you've been following the situation with the collapse of the US comic book market and all these graphic novels that have been dumped. A lot of that trash has ended up at discount outlet stores like Ollie's and some used bookstores. The used bookstores tend to get the better-quality stuff...

Watching recent RUclips videos I see that the Nazis and Japanese actually did have prototypes of some of the "unbelievable" weapon machines seen in Blackhawk. Kid Eternity, a boy superhero who was attacked and nearly died at sea at the hands of Nazis along with his grandfather, only to be saved thanks to the partial intervention of a white-bearded ethereal being and allowed to live, granted powers that are activated by stating his nom de guerre. Sounds oddly familar...
    Yes, I am talking about Captain Marvel, Jr. In fact, E. Nelson Bridwell (at least I think it was he) did a then-modern story in the Seventies which revealed the Kid and Junior were brothers and, if not for Captain Marvel saving his life, it was Freddy Freeman and not Christopher ("Kid") Freeman who was meant to die. The nitpicker in me wants to point out Kid Eternity lived on Earth-Quality rather than Earth-Fawcett, but still, the coincidental similarities of the story practically beg to be tied together.

    • @astrocitizen
      @astrocitizen 2 года назад

      Still thinking about this.... perhaps Kid and Junior are alternate reality versions of one another, not unlike a midway point between the Earth-1 and Earth-2 versions of Batman or Superman (same secret identities and families) and the Flash or Green Lantern (differences in their powers and how they came about).

    I enjoyed the list, but one thing I'd really like on this type of video is some idea of how you made your decisions on rank. I would have probably have agreed with 6 or 7 of your top 10, but my order would have been almost completely different. Then again, my idea of which of their characters is/was popular is based more on what's been done with them since DC took over, so it would be interesting to know if you were only considering their Quality appearances or if something else went into the decisions.

    • @FizzFop1
      @FizzFop1  4 года назад +1

      Hi Jack! Thanks for watching! I based the list on the popularity of characters in the 1940s. For example, Blackhawk was HUGE in the 1940s. He was the only Quality character with a radio show or a serial. He was Quality top selling book from start to finish. Today, he's probably one of the least known. I sort of based the list on what info I could find. Phantom Lady is probably the character that doesn't deserve to be on the list, but i factored in her time with publishers Ajax and Fox. If I really made the list correctly Kid Eternity would have probably been in the number 4 spot.
