    Being raised on Maui and O'ahu, I got goose bumps watching this. All those years studying Hawaiian history in grade school and learning about Kamehameha I and unifying the islands... I never thought I'd see the day! Day one watch!

      Same here. Did they bring a Kumu in once a week for you too? I remember that and learning to play the Ukulele. Real different experience for us than the kids on the Mainland.

    • @bryanjackson8917

      Kamehameha's "unification" of the Hawaiian islands was based on his invasion of neighboring Hawaiian islands, the use of superior force including Western technology (guns and cannons), and upon political machinations.
      His successful conquests were also fueled by "competing forces operating within Hawaiian society," (i.e. fighting among the Hawaiian chiefs of those other islands who opposed him) and also influenced by foreign interests represented by men like Captain George Vancouver.
      Other than the use of violence, I can't quite figure out exactly what his claim to be the "king of Hawaii" was based on, as he had no moral authority to claim any such thing.

      SEE is under appreciated AF. It was given the absolute worst title though really because prefixing any kind of search with 'See' seriously confuses search algorithms. You can search and find stuff about it but it's unfortunate name really does hamper it a lot. I consistently find almost no one I ever speak to has heard of it. It had so much more potential than it was given.

      Iorana, Pehe Koe.
      I got really emotional watching this. Jason Momoa is one of my favorite actors-not just because he’s good at acting, but because of his charisma and the respect he shows for traditions and Polynesian culture. Every time he gets the chance, he brings a piece of it to the screen, helping people discover it.
      And if you add the great Temuera Morrison to the mix… uuufff. And then they talk about our culture? That got me instantly.
      As a wargamer, especially in DBMM, I play a Hawaiian army led by Kamehameha I, and seeing my favorite troops-the S-class pikemen-with feathered helmets, crests, and cloaks… it really hit me emotionally. Although, yeah… that way of throwing pikes? Well, I won’t ask for a history lesson-this is pure excitement!
      As someone who is half Chilean and half Rapa Nui, I truly love all Polynesian culture.

    If you have ever had the privilege to be in Hawaii and I don't mean tourist Hawaii but local Hawaii, you'll know how important a series like this is. Polynesian people are rarely recognized. Their culture is unique and life changing. I spent time in Hawaii as an adolescent and then as a teen. When I left in 1989, I left a piece of my soul there; upon my death, my cremated remains will be spread there. I'm excited to watch this series.

      As someone from a country plundered and brought to its knees by colonialism and whose history is also rarely acknowledged, I totally get how important this must be for Polynesians in general and Hawaiians in particular. That's why I was very excited when this show was announced, and now that we finally get to watch it, I must say that it is an absolute gem of a TV series, beyond expectations.

      Kamehameha was absolutely BRUTAL to his political opponents especially on other islands. Read up about what he did to hundreds perhaps THOUSANDS of native Oahuans at the foot of those beautiful lush green mountains on the North Shore. That area is basically a giant cemetery.

    • @ScottTaylorMCPD
      @ScottTaylorMCPD 2 months ago

      @RichardSchiffman-m8v Civil wars are never pretty to resolve, and Kamehameha was a master of war, and brutal by our standards, but not out of the bounds of his society. TBH, Augustus and Lincoln had to make similarly tough calls to bring their respective civil wars to a close. All three figures have come to be seen as great leaders today.

      I hear you BUT I'm worried that people are going to take this as history. I hope they explore what happened when the Hawaiians took over and killed the original tribes living there. There has been this social justice push using shame of the ancestors to shame us into not being whacist so others can profit. Destruction or disappearing of founding father statues while reverse narratives such as Woman King (the Dahomey WERE slavers and the war was actually the Europeans STOPping slavery) the reverse technique of their historic revisionism. Hope it's good!

I remember talking to my wife and saying this is something big, for the first time in the big screen we have Hawaiian representation. This is what Polynesian people need!! we saw it on Friday and it was great. We can’t wait for the rest of the episodes.

    Temuera Morrison getting his well-deserved flowers as well. If you never seen him in "Once Were Warriors", it tells the other side of the coin from this new project - how the proudest, fiercest people in Polynesia, the Maori, struggle with being second-class, forgotten people in their homelands in modern times.

  • @jeffyoung60
    @jeffyoung60 4 months ago +8

    In 1994 there was a little-known and underappreciated historical Polynesian movie shown from the perspective of the indigenous peoples. It was titled, "RAPA NUI". It chronicles the final years of the ecological and social decline of Rapa Nui (Easter Island) perhaps around the early 1700s. The building of the moai statues continues unabated while the ecological resources of the island collapse ultimately leading to social collapse and civil war.

      @pueohoot543 3 months ago

      @tadasdovii8262chill, you truly do not know what you are talking about. Consuming humans is the least sustainable way of life, Hawaiians were highly civilized, eating a heart was a warriors task, only the greatest could and those consumed were also of the highest regard in battle. There is a lot to eat in the islands: birds, wild boar, horse and cattle (depending where in the pacific you were) and Hawaiians had it all. We were omnivorous and we were highly integrated cultivators and agriculturalists. We farmed, had complex water systems for agriculture and fisheries, even a trade and barter system between other island and eventually the whole world. Truly before you speak, consider reality and facts.

      @sinners_nsfw sadly, because he don't know uch about his life prior to the fall of o'ahu, it can be assumed that he didn't do too much. he probably fell into a similar situation as Young and Davis. hopefully he wasn't kidnapped like them though. i'll need to do more research

      @OperationHawaiiana Don’t automatically assume because we know little about them that they did little. I applaud you for wanting to do more research though. Compulsory education in America has twisted US and World history in unimaginable knots. 🪢 When I see a name pop up and I’m told they did nothing or we are led to believe they were insignificant, that’s my cue to investigate them, further. Because our historical system has a history of lying.

    I love Jason Momoa. He is such a versatile actor❤❤❤

      Idk if I'd use the word versatile, he's mostly the same character in all his projects. He's good at that type of role though.

      @audiolova9906 He's pretty different in Fast X. He is psychotic and sadistic. In Minecraft he is goofy and clumsy. Pretty different from Aquaman and roles like this.

      Bro just walks around with raised eyebrows in all movies. Please don’t disrespect the great actors by using words like Versatile loosely. He is just a bodybuilder that happens to be famous. Not an actor imo
