"For unto us, a Child is born; unto us, a Son is given, and the government shall be upon His shoulder, and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace." - Isaiah 9:6
+Groudon Swampert Yes, indeed, but I suppose it's a case of not missing what you never had. Before Handel and Bach there was much beautiful music of course, but how awful it would be if they were taken away again now that we've had them.
Beautiful song for Christmas. I think of a cool damp Christmas morning in the English countryside, this beautiful composition pouring out of a grey cathedral just as dawn brightens the earth, draping over the green hills and clipping horses
This was our Christmas 2020 in Rochester, Kent. Unable to travel back home, we stayed in the UK. I’d only add eating mince pies and watching the Queen’s Christmas Speech at 3:00 pm.
What a beautiful piece. So mesmerizing. The way Handel arranged it is brilliant, not it is beyond brilliant. It's something greater than talent. What a wonderful composer Handel was. Just no words sufficient to express how great this piece sounds.
As his own words Handel had claimed that the God helped him creating this piece. This feels more impressive when you read his challenges throughout his life.
On the one syllable “born” is stretched over a group of notes known as a melisma. This 57 note stretching out of “born” is the longest melisma ever written in the history of music.
@@justiniantbh he never answered again, so either it was so good he ascended to heaven right on the spot or it was so poor he was killed by a rain of rotten tomatoes.
Händel... I never get tied of his music! The greatest composer not to have known about Bach. I just wonder what would his music have been had he known Bach's music, he would try to "surpass" even that! I absolutely love everything Bach did, but Händel's intriguing simplicity, captivating melodies and surprising effects make him my favourite composer. Bach's Brandenburg's are absolute perfection, but Händel's Concerti grossi get my attention and being practically as no other piece of music. Or his Water Music, I never get tired of that masterpiece. The Messiah however is something supreme, transcending even sacred music. It makes me wanting to sing as I were in a pub or something. Only Händel achieves that... no wonder he finishes his Water Music with the marvelous and commoner-like tune "Country dance". If you haven't heard it I recommend this version: ruclips.net/video/4atxLPaRseY/видео.html
Tkanks a lot.... "For untos us a Child is born" from Haendel....C'est cette version légèrement plus rapide que j'apprécie depuis le début des années 80... Quand d'autres écoutaient les musiques du monde, j'écoutais Haendel, Bach, Mozart, Lully.... J'avais perdu ces enregistrements en les partageant à quelqu'un qui ne me les a jamais rendus.... Glory to God, why do the nations ? So wonderful, I'm glad.....
I've sung Messiah solo and in Chorus at least 5 time. It's a wonderful union of German and English talent. We should honour our Saxon heritage more. He was from Halle and der Saale originally which is the neighbouring city to Leipzig and he became court composer to the Hanoverians. My ex sang for the opera company there. She is Saxon. It was also the media centre of the GDR and one of the richest and most elite towns in the GDR as a result. It's still famous for media and arts.
Am a novice pianist... I just finished learning to play the piece... but the 16th notes in 3rds at the wonderful consellor drain me so much that i can't keep up... My fingers are giving up on me coz it is so fast and demand so much conditioning on the piano. Anyone has a fix?
G.F.Handel was the organist at my church (St. George's, Hanover Square, London). In 2018, the church's choir and that of the Parish school perform, accompanied by the organ he played - inspirational! Visitors to London should also pass his home on Brook Street; Jimi Hendrix lived next door, years later!
When in london, i have visited st georges hanover square, and viewed handels organ, also visited his house a few times in brook street mayfair as my grandpatents lived nearby, Handel has always been one of my heros, and of course have taken part in perfomances of messiah, and too attended two of his operas in the 90s when they are staged at the coliseum for ENO, unforgetable memories!
@@o.s.h.4613 No, I sing in a choir and I consider that Handel was much better in vocal and choral music than Bach. He was much more expressive, dramatic, varied and knew how to combine different styles. Their double choruses are impressive
@@Musica-xo3uv The B minor mass and the 2 passions are all better than anything Handel ever wrote. But I agree that Handel is more consistently exciting-there are literally no dull tracks in Messiah :)

Handel was a great recycler, using his own previously compositions for the various arias, choruses, and solos, for the music in the Messiah. "For Unto Us a Child is born, is note for note, taken from the duet "No, Di Voi Non Vo' Fidarmi" in his Cantata XVI.
That explains the lack of three- or four-part writing (of course not taking into account the bits he filled in)
Now that is my kind of recycling ... recycling gold into gold ^^
