Good video. I stopped caring about Panasonic after they gave up on producing any L-mount lenses. They let Sigma produce 20 Lenses per week and all Panasonic did was a 50mm f1.4 prime. I want to use first party lenses on my gear. So moved to Sony.
Sigma glass on Sony and Panasonic is basically as good as first party lenses. In fact, my sigma 24-70 2.8 ART is basically identical to the gmaster. Imo, slightly better AF with slightly less sharpness. And it was half the price of the gmaster.
Hmm, interesting! I am a Sony shooter (A7IV, A7SIII) and I was pretty impressed. However it is true that you have to set the AF settings carefully to get the best results.
@@cameracollective9522 Yes.. did some lifestyle portraits outdoor and the tracking of the body was good but jumping from time to time. autofocus with the sigma 24-70 was not that responsive like I am used to with sony

If I were choosing between the S5 and the A7IV, despite the vastly superior recording formats (mostly open gate) of the Panasonic, would still go for the Sony. Key reason is lenses and device compatibility. The lenses for e mount are more plentiful, and the adapters with autofocus are usually less buggy. Additionally, There are hundreds if not thousands of attachments/accessories for the A7 line with it being much more of a popular camera line. The camera itself on the S5II but like many things, it’s not just about specs or features, but the ecosystem it lives in. I myself own and A1 so neither camera appeals to me, as using either one is a massive downgrade for me. But if I had to start over in the prosumer space again, I’d still go with the Sony.
I agreed. I love Panasonic for its features and body design, but at the end, who has more lens and accessories will win the battle. I'm happy with my A74 and 35GM so far, the only I'm missing on A74 is 4K@60 in FF.
It would be interesting to hear your ideas on buying into Panasonic vs Sony ecosystem as a whole. I don't have a full frame camera at the moment. I want to switch to full frame for better landscape, nature, outdoor portrait, street and travel photography and start with video too. S5 II sells for 2300 or 2500 (kit) in Switzerland. Sony a7 IV sells for 2000 or 2200 (kit) at it's cheapest offer in the spring sale. But normally they cost around the same price these days in many regions in Europe. So if comparing it to a7 IV and the price is not a differentiator, is S5 II better? Considering ecosystem, cheap lenses, other available Sony bodies as upgrade paths. 33mpix. Second hand market. I still like the ergonomy, display, video options and IBIS of s5 II better. But it's the only phase detect camera which Panasonic has. So there is nothing to upgrade to at the moment..if you don't like it you're stuck with L mount lenses on the only body with phase detect that Panasonic has. I want to order S5 II with 20-60 mm and then get more lenses. However, I'm not sure it's a rational decision long term considering the Sony and E-mount ecosystem as a competition. On the other hand if I get a7 IV I'm worried I'll be regretting it every time when I see the low res screen of the a7IV and it's IBIS performance. As an amateur, handheld video means a lot to me.
The Sony is a better ecosystem, the S5 is a better video shooter. I myself mentioned this in a comment on this channel. More lenses and more accessories on the Sony side, much better recording formats on the Panasonic side.
Also, I shoot handheld with my A1. With steady hands and some practice you don’t need crazy IBIS. An 80 dollar third party battery grip on Sony also helps add some much needed weight to smooth things out too. My A1 screen is meh, but cheap monitors exist that are better than the s5iis for that matter. Imo it’s less what you mentioned, and more about lenses and accessories vs. video specs.

That is just simply not true :D I use both systems daily and as I said in the video autofocus is crazy good. It is not Sony level but definitely very close. And also this camera is not just about the AF system that everyone is talking about, but much more than that.
@@cameracollective9522 I wouldn't say 99%, yes the majority of people will buy from high street retailers, but I have always bought from a grey as have my friends, Ive had the camera go in for service and never had a problem
Much easier for the sensor to process the full width at 30fps with minimal downsampling than it is to process double the amount of frames and downsample the image to 4k. The processor is capable of handling the downsampling and high frame rate, but the sensor simply cant read out fast enough that you'd get absolutely horrendous rolling shutter, so instead it crops in so it doenst need to read out as much of the sensor, which actually provides much much better rolling shutter performance.
Well, I know one more VERY IMPORTANT FEATURE no one is talking about... Lumix S5II and S5IIX don't have new Phase Detect AF in 1080p full frame 50,60,100 and 120 FPS but only old Contrast AF which is the biggest disappointment... So for some reason people who prefer to shoot 1080p FF in slow-mo from 50 to 120 fps they should do that with old glitchy Contrast base AF. Same for all of those who were hoping to upscale 1080p 50-120 fps to 4k - no PDAF. And taking into account it's a video-oriented hybrid camera, it looks like without a firmware update in the next several months almost perfect camera becomes garbage. I preordered S5IIX and now looking forward to the firmware update. Hope they will fix it by the time S5IIX ships. If not - will just move to another brand. I believe this is a very important factor people should know about.
Everyone is talking about this…:D In the past 3-4 years I think I used 1080p like 5-6 times not more. I think 4k is a standard now. I know that there is a bunch of people uses 1080p for different situations but as you are saying I think it can be easily fixed in future firmware update.
I think it's a limitation of the sensor and can't be fixed by firmware. PDAF works by having extra "phase detect pixels" on the sensor. For full frame and 50 fps (and above), lines and pixels are skipped. Thus, not all PD pixels are available. For slower frame rates, I think it's possible to read out all pixels and perform binning to get to 1080p. So basically, if you use the S5 ii always in APSC Crop mode for filming, you get PDAF in any mode. I'd say the S5ii is a FF photo camera and an APSC video camera.
@@SebastianReick Thanks. I got your point. But other brands do implement PDAF in similar price range cameras like Canon R6, Sony A7III/IV, 7C, Nikon Z6 in all 1080p modes. Sony even has 7k sensor, not 6k. So for me, it's more a marketing move than technical.
It's better to have 2-3 of the same camera and the features dont matter that much tobehonest if you do client work with them. Lumix is kinda at a dead end(their flag ships end at this lvl) and there is not going much for them where Sony is releasing all their cameras with E mount lens.... so you are not foreced to upgrade the lenses when upgrading the camera. Sony less features at the cutting edge for bang for the buck and Lumix a lot of features and bang for the bug af sucks in comparisons and low light with no upgrade equivalate and need to rebuy everything. Mind you lumix is more reliable in heat and weather and more all round... but its cheaper to buy top of the line cameras and get the required result vs buy cheap and pay more to behandicaped with low light and af issues... to just rebuy everything.
Please tell me this is true, Panasonic s5 mark2 -1080p 4.2.2 10 bit 24/25/30fps FF (Full-Frame) use PDAF. 1080p 4.2.2. 10 bit 50/60fps FF use DFD (old contrast method). 1080p 50/60fps APS-C mode use PDAF.
Yeah I heard something that if you are shooting in MP4 then above 50fps you will only have DFD autofocus. It’s weird but I am not sure about this. Honestly I did not test it in MP4 cause I only shoot in MOV mode (what most people use) and I haven’t experienced anything like that.
lumix needs to improve on phase detection, as many of you want to get the most out of the sensor with 1080p 60fps, as the 4k 60fps crop doesn't take advantage of the lens's focal length. I am a sony alpha camera user and converting to Lumix, hope lumix can listen to users' opinions to improve on future firmwares or with lumix s5-2x otherwise lumix s5-2x will be very hard sell
@@mrdetailing9406 I like lumix's video and photo files for a long time, lumix has beautiful colors and images. Lumix's screen is also very beautiful and they also allow users to customize the color of the file without the limitation like sony, which only Sony's FX series allows. Although focusing on the Lumix s5ii is still a bit difficult to capture the moment at the wedding, I believe panasonic will fix it.
