this shit is awsome good job b.do you do callbs with local artist like myself?and what recording software do yall guys use that shit sound good?i use adobe audition 1.5 is pretty good but yall software is off the hook hit me up!
Legendary lyricist and vocalist. Subscribe to his channel, JamTV. He uploads every week. I see he gets wild in the studio, jumping around and backing up from the mic. That's passion. Personally, I've always had a hard time leveling out the volume of the recording when that happens. The farther away from the mic, the lower the volume sounds. The closer to the mic, the louder it sounds, sometimes distorting the recording. I always had to stay at the same distance from the mic to prevent distortion and mixing problems. The mic also picks up any little sound, such as footsteps. Maybe my mic just sucks. Technology today can fix those things and balance the volume with the click of a mouse.
Thats one reason for doing dubs and adlibs (not meaning "random word adlibs" but instead *highlight parts* on key phrases) and that smooths out if you have low parts, being u can boost parts fron the dubs to thicken it and lower the bad part from the main take into a dub, make it very subtle, or even remove it. Not only does it thicken the vocals and add energy without having to peak/Clip but it gives you more vocal tracks to work with if theres an issue. You just have to know how to blend it, quick rundown being turning the backing vocals lower than each prior one, removing the Lows to keep it from getting muddy, and panning some stuff Left and Right to avoid clutter and widen it out some. Even if wanting that newage sound of "1 vocal track" only (and sometimes adlibs), its still good to do ATLEAST 1 dub layer and just turn it real low, it'll thicken your voice even if its not meant to be noticeable.. Pac and Bone brought this technique to hip hop from Rock and then everyone was did it (besides alot of NY artists), then it started fading away in the late 00's when Lil Wayne made the "freestyle sound" popular to do on actual album tracks, and autotune ehanced the vocal presence also.. It was a HUGE turning point in hip hop that I feel did it no justice... Thats one reason NOW that most rappers get signed for having a unique voice and gimmick, opposed to actual talent, the industry wants music that people can sing along with and thats just more simple all around.. Dubs are often hidden in the mix but 3-4 layers is whats gone now, even *highlight word adlibs*... As of late the mids are being boosted on vocals to give them more presence and it makes the reverb more noticeable aswell. Hooks are still layered these days on professional tracks but not as heavily, maybe one take in the center and 2x dubs, one panned 40-80% left and 40-80% right. Sometimes one more narrow than the other; The mix is your canvas! So many newer aspiring artists just record one vocal track and wonder why it sounds like something is missing. By these new "mid boosting" plug ins/presets at home studio setups are similar to the mainstream hip hop spund, at least "southern hip hop" (by heavy MIDS I mean like a mild megaphone effect without bass or much treble in the vocals) Btw, this is my track FT BB and trust me, their was PLENTY of distortion but solely due to when BB said "Turn me up so I aint screaming so much" and the way it was worded, the engineer thought he was gonna spit lower and turned up the actual mic volume. BB meant for him to turn him up in his headphones which the enginner could have done By turning the beat down and keeping the levels the same, all the leveling done when BB practiced the hook over and over for that process. That was an easy miscommunication but once BB started spitting even louder, the engineer should have noticed and corrected on the next take... I dont think he had ever dealt with artists that record the way BB did or he was just starstruck and playing the whole "too cool" thing being he didnt communicate anything with him as an enginner should, tried to play the "Im a pro" and botched alot of the sound quality. Basically just hit record and watched. The end of the video u can see him admit that everything had been distorted as if he had no control over it. I didnt know he still had it cranked up and was watching it red line the enitre time until it was too late. Smh Also, big studios have "real time compressors" to where loud parts wont exceed the set DB level and low parts will be boosted. BB was used to that setup and the studio looked decent to where we all thought the dude would have tracked the session professionally The final version had to have so much to mask the distortion that it took away from the intensity of it, but this footage existing and being so monumental is good enough to make all well in the end, looking back... May do a "10 year anniversary" remix with someone (that I wont name) whom has produced some of BBs best solo projects; especially sound quality and production wise. If so, will have him to do a different approach to the mix to give it a different vibe, also with a revamped Beat.... Couple Elements of the original but a newer vibe all around. Be on the lookout!
