- This is not a representive comparison for sword vs warhammer in armored combat. It's a demonstration of a knight fight with asymetric weapons, as both are effective in their own ways. A detailed analysis of each weapons will follow soon.

Sometimes blunt weapons are underestimated due to the fact they dont fell their opponent in a single strike through armor, as it is often imagined.
But i think fighting in armor is all about wearing your opponent down till you can grapple them for the knife kill, and blunts still do that very wonderfully, in my perception.
But sharps can kill you before,
looks like even though those hammer hits really hurt there isn't a high risk of serious injury from the blows.
If the tip of the hammer would be narrow and not blunt and made from a heavyer material than light titanium, it would be a bigger thread. The tip is also hard rubber 😉.
That does not sound that historically accurate, a titanium hammer. I do understand why though.

So how have you not accidentally killed each other yet? those spiky hammer blows looked hard as hell. or are they some kind of foam thing?
i wonder who felt the hits more. i'm assuming the hammer blows hurt more? maybe the longsword blows were even very easy to take? it seems like heavy armour fights are a matter on endurance. whoever runs out first, will get knocked down, and then.... well, things won't be improving for them. if i had a warhammer, and knocked my opponent down, i would keep hammering with big overhead swings. I've heard that dagger to gaps is the other way to finish the opponent, but i would not want to grapple and risk my own gaps to the oppositions dagger. seems better to, once you knock them down, keep raining down blows on them from the safer position.
Swords are like twohanded daggers, they also try to hit the gabs with even bigger force. So it's mostly not an endurance match up. In this fight it's the question if the hammer can knock out the opponent with a strike to the head or the sword pierces the gabs deep enough. I like the longsword more 😉
@@dequitemnice of you to reply. i have noted from your later videos you prefer the longsword, and i understand why, but my question still stands. how did it feel like taking hits from that hammer, vs an opponent trying to jab the longsword into gaps? surely the hammer blows where much more painful? or maybe not?
surely jab, jab jab from the longsword (halfswording) is far easier to take than repeated bash, bash, bash from the hammer (or poleaxe)?
Yes the warhammer hurts more and a strike to the head can kill. But pain isn't the important factor if you don't fight with blunt weapons. Blunt swords normally don't du pain but pointy tips could kill.
@@dequitem thanks, that's what it kinda looked like. last question, it's difficult to see, but how easy is it for you to drive your halfword gripped longsword point into your opponents gaps while he is bashing you and shoving you away with his warhammer? would you say, 1) you mostly miss, 2) i get a decent stab in every 3rd exchange of shoving/blows, or 3) when i close i find i can immediately drive the point dangerously into the gaps?
since you like the longsword best, i'm expecting your answer to be number 3) or number 2). although if its number 2) i'd say the warhammer and longsword are evenly matched because if it is a struggle to get that point in, surely being bashed repeatedly during this struggle is taking a dangerous toll.

so, tell me about the hammer, and the armour, the hammer was steel? how hard did it hit? at what point would you say that this hammer would be something youd maybe feel was life threatening even in the armour?
The spike of the hammer is only hard rubber, so the hammer is 300 Gramm lighter. The strike to the head was the only life threatening if it would be steel and not rounded. But nearly every other strike wasn't effective to kill someone. They hurt all and would be do small injuries!

How much damage would blunt weapons do? I assumed that they would be very destructive to an armored knight.
So are the only ways knights die on a battlefield is by piercing through armor cracks, getting crushed under the weight of other bodies or drowning in the mud?
A mace or warhammer hurt, but they don't crush hardened steel armor. Search for Buhurt combat sport on RUclips and take a look on some guys wracking the shit out of each other with maces and can still fight in the next round!
I'm really curious how hits like the bonk around 0:52 feels? That's got to be jarring at the least. How much does that hurt? How much damage could it do?
The recieving side of the bonk here. It didn't really hurt, at least I don't remember it doing that. But you can see I tangled half a second as it was a well placed hit.
But everything was fine after the fight!

He actually fall over a a small hill on the ground when I pushed him with the shield. So it was a unlucky combination.
Pleasantly surprised this popped into my feed. I would definitely like to hear in depth thoughts on how armored hammer and longsword dueling would work... It's hard for me not to see it as sheer bashing contest, where the hammer would get the opponent down first and then I guess that's doom for him.
I have to make some more recordings first but I will make a comparison in depth in some weeks.
You can watch some buhurt fighting, those guys fight with blunted weapons obviously and use not as historic armor but do fight enthusiasticly and go for the knockouts. As close to real medieval fighting as it gets these days.

I would not want to be the knight with the sword, Warhammers are my favourite medieval weapons, but damn I wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end even if the other guy was going easy on the hits.

The armor is hardened steel and titanium and very resistant, so no big dents! The metal of the hammer is soft titanium for less weight and impact. The spike is hard rubber😉.

Jesus Christ. I fought in armor for a bit, but the thought of getting hit with that hammer in just a brigandine makes me sweat.
It is pain and make bruises, but don't injure you in a titanium brigandine and with a hardened steel helmet forged by myself!
At the same time though, you and you're opponents are not fighting to kill. While you're always giving it your all, as your videos show , you are not fighting for your life and there has to be some mental distinction between the two.
I feel like this played a massive part in the argument in a comment section of another one of your videos about how effective blunt weapons are against armour.

Yikes! Cool fight but man...isnt the warhammer designed specifically to fight against full plate armor? I get needing to full spar with the weapons but its not like fighting with a blunt blade, you're meant to feel those blows. Helmet or not have you ever been seriously concussed by a blow to the head?
I always hate those fights where dudes just bop other fighters with sword blades on the armor because (obviously) they're not allowed to use the point the way it was and SHOULD be.
Meanwhile, this feels so much more true-to-form with the proper usage of a bludgeoning weapon in armored combat. 😂
Is this really how to do battle with a long sword against a shield? Wouldn't it be better to keep distance with the length of the sword and use that to poke thru the shield? Idk!
You can't keep. Distance if your opponent didn't allow it.
@@dequitem Ok. I get that you were probably more skilled and kept it close quarters, but I'm just talking ideally here. The man with the long sword half sworded the whole battle, and I'm just wondering wouldn't it be better to use it's length to keep the shield at bay sort of like a spear.

The pike is hard rubber, and it's made of light titanium, it's much less dangerous than a real Warhammer would be, for obvious safety reasons

The spike is hard rubber and the sides are titanium. So the hammer is a little bit lighter than historical, but still hurts like a Mordhau with a sword ;)

Because it interests me, is there any safety precautions when using a weapon such as the warhammer.
It must still stun you if you get hit on the helmet proper, right?
Cool matchup though with a weapon made to strike armour and a weapon made to strike inbetween armour.
Even if the hammer wouldn't be blunt you have to strike to the gabs and weak spots. The hammer would only puncture 1 or 2 cm and than stop. But you are right it hurts and can take you to the ground.
Although I have two different types of war hammers.... I feel I need more now.
Mayby a light training version, but there are no rubber or Titanium variants for training on the market.

Is the warhammer made of steel? I admire your bravery. I have tested my steel warhammer against my greave and it caved in pretty good. It hits so hard compared to a sword.
The spike is hard rubber, rest is steel, titanium and wood.

You don't need more than that.
Hammer/mace is the meta indefinitely since full plate end of story
I don't think so. Blades become narrow to pierce chain and to thrust in the gabs more effective, a mace wasn't that effective anymore. Hammers where still okay, but not as effective like a spear. And a sword can be s small spear.

I think in real battle longsword stands no chance. To imagine how bones and armor crack as the hammer stirkes. Must be horribly and painful.
Is the warhammer something custom made by yourself or purchased from someone else?
Wanted to use one for re-enactment fighting but either getting something safe means one made of rubber which doesn't look right or one made of steel which is too heavy to be safe.
