Worked with DL many times in the Liberty Theatre in Eunice Louisiana, a great friend, he was backed also by the legendary Don Helms from the Hank Williams band, lots of stories there, great times with music and memories.

This guy’s photo should be next to the DEFINITION of Cajun in the dictionary!!! He embodies everything that being Cajun is all about!!!

I got to meet D.L. in the early 2000s. My wife (at the time) had an uncle who was the Parish priest in Erath. My in-laws who knew I loved Cajun music said - You are going to meet D.L. Menard! I didn’t want to bother the man - and I’m not Catholic so I didn’t want the authority of the Church to twist any arms - but I went.
D.L. And his wife Lou Ella were so nice to us. We sat in their kitchen talking about music, Cajun culture and woodworking, drinking coffee and playing with their little Chihuahua, “Tacobell”! D.L. showed us his autographed photo of Hank Williams. At some point he encouraged me to get out my accordion. I assured him that my skills were below rudimentary - but he and Lou Ella said don’t worry. Fortunately “The Back Door” was a tune that I knew (if “knew” is not too strong a term for it). I actually sort of played and D.L. played his guitar and sang.
I felt so welcomed and at home with those folks. There was a CD of his that I didn’t actually already own. I bought one and he signed it - the same way that Hank Williams had autographed the photo when D.L. met him back in the early 50s, “Best Wishes”.
My wife didn’t know anything about Cajun music and I am from L.A. (not LA) - but D.L. said that people outside of Louisiana often knew more about Cajuns than a lot of people in Louisiana. Hopefully that has changed by now. I know that my ex-wife - who grew up listening to Lynyrd Skynyrd and Allman Bros - didn’t know anything about that rich Cajun musical heritage (and her Dad is a Cajun!) After meeting D.L. and Lou Ella she was pretty impressed.
We were down there for Christmas and I had the opportunity to help some of the local parishioners move some sheep, goats and burros into a live nativity they were setting up on Christmas Eve. I just want to put in a good word for them also. Incredibly nice people who made us feel welcome (and made some great gumbo!) They really appreciated the culture and the lifestyle they were able to live - they knew it was special.
I don’t know why this video has never shown up for me on RUclips before - but I’m glad it did! D.L. was funny, gracious and humble - truly a great man.

Now that's good music, I don't care who you are. Too early for beer now, but I found another of his that I'll hold until 5:00.
