- Vintage Hot Rod Straight 6 - Painting Candy Colors
Everybody knows that the engine is a central key component to ANY Hot Rod project. But is a V8 the only way to go? NO WAY! Stacey takes a vintage straight six engine that has been sleeping in a crate for almost 40 years and he puts on the right pieces. He shows you why the straight six was a force to be reckoned with in the early days of hot rodding. After that, Stacey jumps into the tips and tricks of how to paint your own true Kandy paint job. If you are into vintage Hot Rods, Kandy paint, and multi-carbs… you don’t need to go on a diet… you just need to watch GearZ!
Stacy David: the Bob Ross of customization of vehicles!
I absolutely love the straight and slant 6 cylinders. And they are bullet proof.
The ending with the father and son is excellent given their ages. Awesome!
12Bolt Tom has dual/split headers for this application. I bought a set for my 65 wagon with its original 230 inline 6, along with an Offenhauser 4brl intake to put a Holley 390 carb. I love the hopped-up inline 6's, I also like the new paint job on this motor, may have to repaint mine when I have it out.
Very cool!
I once knew the man who, at that time, held the world record for the fastest in-line 6. It was a G.M.
Hey Stacey, nice to see you on the air again.
Always loved your shows, think you’re one of the most down to earth and informative people in this business.
Most badass 6-cylinder engine that I ever saw was Bruce Sizemore's Ford Maverick that had a Ford 240 engine bored and stoked to 300 CID and had 3 Ford 351c cylinder heads cut and welded into oner cylinder head. The car held the NHRA H/MP record for several years. I raced him once with my E/MP '57 Ford and I won, but not by much.
I bought a 292 straight 6 from a buddy a few months ago , its out a 1965 Chevy truck , sitting in a 1969 c10 long bed right now just a rat truck , I never thought of doing it like that , was going to sell it but now I'm second thinking that idea , thank you for this video about the straight 6, great video
Awesome!
A straight 6 cylinder is the perfect candidate for tri-power
Beautiful L6. The best engine created.
Something with that straight 6 and painted that green would be sweet, love that candy green.
That's not 292. The passenger side motor mount is in the middle of the block, the fuel pump is towards the front, and the lifter galley covers are 4 inches high vs 6 inches for the 292.
yep
Agreed
I did this with a 300 Ford in my 79 F 100 Ranger Pickup Truck with a Convirted 3on the to on the floor.
Opffenhouser Is totally awesome for Fords or Chevy
You must really be a gear head and know your engines
Loved this episode when it first came out, been watching since I was a kid. I got a lot of inspiration from this show. I can tell now that that's a 194, 230, or 250, based on the height of the side covers and the location of the motor mount boss and fuel pump. I have a few of em 😎
thinking the exact same thing!
My '67 Dodge Coronet had a 225 slant six and that was a great engine. Looked cool, especially the built ones with headers and a 4bbl carb.
You had some great ideas in this episode by suggesting doing a couple of mods slightly outside of the h box. The 6 cylinder hot rod engine upgrade is an interesting twist for a hot rod. My neighbor has four (nice) hot rods and they all have a 350 in them! Lmao 😅for hot rodders that seems to be the only motor created. They put it in everything! So I think this pepped up six is a nice change!
The segment on candy paint was also interesting. I started doing a resto on a 73 Dodge van in 2021 and decided it was my opportunity to try some custom painting. I went to RUclips and watched all the custom painting videos on candy and custom graphics I could find. I had already shot a few paint jobs through the years, so I wasn’t a stranger to basic body and paintwork. I’ve been having a blast doing the custom paint work on my van. Put four cool murals on it so far, plus numerous custom panels with various patterns and small flames. I’m pleased with the efforts so far. Now I want to flake and custom paint everything I do in the future.
I shot a quart of the Duplicolor pre-mixed candy paint on the inside of the van in a few spots. If you are doing an entire car, I wouldn’t go with that because it’s lacquer and that type of paint doesn’t last like enamels. I’m using Eastwood’s single stage paints and candy paints and European clear. You can use their paint products with other compatible brands of paint and you won’t have an issue. Just don’t mix lacquer and enamels is my recommendation. Look forward to more of your shows.
Working on an AMC 304 for my 76 CJ5 that's been sitting for who knows how long. I found that sometimes sitting and never hurts to pop that intake and check out those hydraulic lifters, make sure they're still functioning , mine were stuck as a result I now have some bent push rods but it's going to take more than just push rods to fix that problem so we're updating and getting a whole Cam and lifter kit put in it, as well as another set of push rods of course. So just because it ran when pulled, depending on how long it sat might mean that you need to check it out! Definitely explains why mine sounded like it wanted to run but didn't... So beware of the obvious guys it'll get you every time.
Built a 330 CID inline 6 for my 1965 Chevy G10 Van. Cost me $7k to produce 300 HP. Then I bought a used Mercruiser 383 magnum for $3k and cut up my doghouse to fit it. Really notice the difference now that I have 500 HP in my 1998 pound GVW van.
Really enjoyed, great vid!!! 👍👍
With a little bit of looking, one should be able to find a set of the (I guess out of production) Clifford research headers. I used to have a '66 C10 with a 292 running an Offy intake with a 400cfm Holley and Clifford headers, giving dual exhaust. This set up gave me an extra 4 mpg and a whole lot of a performance kick.
Years ago I had a 292 out of a Chevrolet pickup and I bought a split header from JC Whitney ran good
Just stumbled on this video. Thanks for posting the build on the six cyl. I have a low S/N '67 Camaro with a 250CID and have been contemplating a LS or 383 Swap like everybody does. I'm not racing the car, just want a bit more drivability out of it, so building the existing motor might be just what's needed! I need to add power steering and A/C, so a bit more HP/TQ would be perfect. I also found a place called Clifford Performance, their motto is 6=8, they have some great parts for building performance into our 6 bangers. I applaud you for inspiring me to do this, I'm going to have the block and head refurbished, add a performance cam, water cooled aluminum intake manifold, small Holley 4bbl, split manifold headers & dual exhaust, and a HEI Ignition (might splurge for their performance head?). It's a "Pace Setter" Edition, so it has a 3sp on the floor and Bumble Bee stripe across the front from the factory, so doing this build vs. the other will help it maintain some of it's originality (I'll keep all the original pieces) while adding a bit of pep. I'll probably upgrade the drum brakes to disc and also the factory suspension while I'm at it. You've really inspired me, thanks again!!
That's an awesome build! You'll be the envy of all the Camaro owners at car shows, because everyone will walk right past the typical V8 cars and look at yours!
I also have a 67 camaro standard coupe ,front stripe, 250 6 cyl. 3 spd. Stick on floor, ( it now has a Muncie 4 spd.) Emerald turquoise, all original. Condition.
How do I see it Mike? Would love to connect and swap stories@@mikeheggem9488
And all the 292s were in trucks, painted blue.
That is an engine that has been ran, couldn’t miss the painted over dirt.
I earned a top fan badge on Facebook.. I'll start watching more lol I'm Nate Hait.. lol
very cool Candy Colors Thank for show how to paint is lay on
Thanks for watching!
Old sixties hot rodder told me that a slant six was the only engine that you could use a blower on a stock short block . Don't know from personal experience but he always seemed to be accurate in mechanical trivia
Clifford Research has a header for it
I know this is a little late for the TV show but to be honest there is a company called 6 equals 8 or Clifford performance whichever one you want to use the title for but they sell a lot of inline 6 high performance parts you might want to check with them someday
Thanks Stacey. I have a 292 with a Sisssel12 port head and triple side draft Webers. Shits at 7700 RPM
I have a 230ci in my '63 C10 i painted it black and the valve cover Husqvarna Orange with black Chevrolet writing
Thank you so much for re uploading this episode! It’s one of my favorites!
They made thousands of them Stace?.....How bout millions.
2:20 I agree Stacey. Someone's gotta do it. 👍
ok, gotta admit, i'd hate to take that crate apart either--so many high mile inliners sitting around, this would make good garage wall art to hold up a workbench. But, re-purp'ing that wood into hot rod floorboards? an old trick from Henry Ford himself....
The best engines made are all six in a row.
They put alot of those in line 6 cylinder engines in pickup trucks 🛻 cause they had alot of low end torque
My dad had a 91 F150 with EFI and it was easy to smoke the tires off
GM goofed up on the paper work. That's not a 292. Pushrod covers are too short. It's either a 230 or a 250, probably 250.
You're right.
On the race track 250 cid Chevy engines competed well with the 350 v8 in late model stock cars.
I wonder if Stacy ever realized, after the fact, that this was a 250 instead? How can you tell? The pushrod cover for a 292 are about an 1-1/2" taller, and there is a lot of space between the water pump and cylinder head, when a 250 has the water pump just under the cylinder head. Good episode though, I've always liked those Chev straight sixes!
That metal twine on the crate looks like straight lead
Heavy metal needs a return
Soon.
Ford 300. Boost monster
Hell ya 292 tork monster
David You will have to change valve seals, Or just slide some umbrella seals over,Intake valves.
Just curious how many of us as study under Stacey from the beginning
What are your plans for the 292 six?
How does that modern nylon strap banding end up on a crate engine that old?
I guess the early '70s could have that
I'm too lazy for all that tear down stuff I just get out my borescope and fish around the holes a little bit looking for that critter damage .. maybe a few drops of oil in the cylinders
Engine has been in a garage since 1965 but was built in 1971 hello mcfry anybody home ha ha 😂 still its a 392 from 1971 witch is amazing in itself
Sorry meant 292 but I wonder 🤔 how many cubes you could get out of one
Is it from 1965 or 1971?
Hello, Mr David I need a wiring harness for a 1984 elcamino.can you help me v6
That does not look like a 292 because the side covers are too small. The 292 had 6” tall covers I think.
Only. Two. Times....in. my. Life. So. Far.....did. I. Get. TO. Hear. An. Inline. Six.....with. headers. And. Dual. Exhaust..... and. They. Sounded. Excellent.at. idle..... fortunately...one. was. Mine. The. A...m...c... jeep. 232.....the. other. Was. A. Chevy. 250.....
Uh-oh you just opened Pandora's box there Stacy 😅
In my day you could help a straight 6 with a different cam. Do they no longer have them for a six?
Extremely small market. Basically no one builds inlines due to a variety of reasons. Least of which is the LS and Hemi are plentiful and can make a ton of power for cheap.
Comp Cams stills lists cams for the 194-230-250 engines. Howards cams does as well, and has 292 cams also. Schneider has cams for all the inlines. Delta cams and others can regrind your stocker for more performance.
Is that a 292 or 250 I’m steal a newbie
why not use 3 2bbl carburetors?
Who ever didn't at least tape up the holes should be brought up on felony charges!
So the engine is a 1971 but he said it’s been sitting in a garage since 1965 that doesn’t make any sense.
Wanted to hear how the straight six sound.?
This episode didn’t age well. Straight six engines are expensive, and hard to find now. 😂
Where did you go ????
What kind of engine stand is that
It's from Cornwell Tools.
The saddest thing is that engine will probanly rust solid and never get to run at all.
it takes a special kind if stupid to paint the mating surfaces if the waterpump, intake and exhaust , fuel pump , etc......
So it's a 1971 engine that has been sitting around since 1965. What's going on here, time travel?
That is not a 292 probably 250
i NEVER SPRAY CANDYS ONE PANEL AT A TIME......MOUNT ALK PANELS. ON CAR
...
You can't just put paint on a stock 6 banger and call it a hot rod, that's taking a page out of Craigslist...
His fake laugh makes him sound silly.
It's why I always watch him on mute and read the captions
Come on, No performance cam, How come your not going to make a set of headers, David that's lazy, The intake might get you 40 to 60 hp upgrade, Put a cam in it. This is wrong, That's not Performance
Never started the engine. Why? Just painted a junk engine, put the sponsors parts on it and beat us to death with product endorsement. I now know who not to click on...
Don’t watch anymore.
@@citrus1973 I won't. Once is more than enough. You can have it Bro.
that isn't a 292 fuel pump should be in the middle
I was expecting a Pontiac OHC six. That would have been cool! Excellent video.
Wanted to hear how the straight six sound.?
I love the old straight 6 Chevys, and I have one in a boat. But the 350 and LS platforms have so much aftermarket parts available they are easy to put in anything. I mean, I'm capable of making anything fit into anything, but I also have tons of tools and welders.
Wrong Stacey , you have to treat it first before you prime it then scuff it up retreat it then one more coat of primer then spray the top coat then use about 600 to 800 grit sandpaper then wipe it down with cloth then clear coat it and wait about 11/2 to wax, then polish it and your done. Jeff
I took a 2bl Stromberg and mounted it backwards on my 50 chevy and cut away enough of the throttle body so it pulled down on the linkage like the original. Got noticeable performance improvement.
If i see another vintage dodge/Plymouth coupe with a small block chevy, im gonna puke. Be a little creative and true to the brand and put a 340/360 or better yet, a 331 hemi in it. Quit doing what everyone else does "because it's easy." 😊
250 was race engine in limited race cars here in Maine and they would go. My 70 nova had 250 150 turbo fire it said on air cleaner lol she would spin the tire
I own a 292. I have a two piece header it's just now a short header.
Love the 6
