Alex is ahead of where I was with my swimming when I got in a pool for the first time in 20 years at the start of May. This morning, I swam 1400m in open water and could have gone further. My first sprint tri is in 3 weeks time, and I know it’s going to be ok. Alex, you have plenty of time to build skills and endurance n these three events to finish a sprint triathlon.
I am also doing the Blenheim Sprint triathlon as my first ever triathlon. I am the same as Alex, not much experience of endurance and my swimming is woeful but I am excited nonetheless
LOVE the fact that he just went with like no proper gear except the wet suit, puts such a true spin on what it's really like to be a beginner in this sport
It'd be lovely to have the support and the planning etc. Never mind the ability to borrow equipment etc to see if you enjoy it properly. It's easy to get put off when starting late by the expense or having to use sub par equipment that makes the whole thing harder. I know you don't need to spend a fortune but it's not a cheap sport either.
Oh! I’m so excited to watch this. I also want to complete a triathlon sprint as a complete beginner. I’m signed up for a sprint a year from now. (Postponed to next year ‘22 due to COVID) Good luck, Alex!! 🍀👍
Very nice project. At 46 I'm starting prepping for my first triathlon in a year or so... Very excited about it and I'm sure these videos will help me a lot! Go Alex!!
Awesome! I will do my first sprint triathlon in about two months aswell! Not coming from an endurance background either ! Perfect timing and super excited to follow along ! We got this Alex !
What great timing! Just this morning my running buddy and I decided we'd like to tackle our first triathlon! Looking forward to following Alex's journey!
Stoked to watch this! Wife and I just finished our first sprint TRI 2 weeks ago, watched a lot of your videos in the lead up. It was super fun and looking forward to more!
I've been thinking over the last couple of weeks of maybe having a go at a triathlon. What a coincidence! I will definitely try and follow the training plan!
I wish Alex best of luck! I made the sprint distance the first time this year and there is one more half marathon and another sprint distance triathlon this year. With Mark and the entire GTN team, he has the best coaches he can have. They helped me just with the videos so much. I´m excited to see more of his way to his first triathlon.
Huge thanks for sharing this sprint plan! I followed it and completed my first Sprint Triathlon this past weekend at Lakeside Triathlon (Ontario, Canada). And yeah.....looking to go again next year!
I loved last year’s shows on couch to 5K with Pipa and this couch to triathlon with Alex builds on the idea of anyone can do these events if you just take the first step and commit to a plan. Alex, be careful of Mark because I think he has a future as a cameraman😄😄😄! Always great to see Fraser in the videos 👍! Thanks GTN!
This is fab! I've set myself a target for a triathlon next year as I want to work on my running, only on week 2 of couch to 5k haha. But looking forward to following along, good luck Alex and good on you!
In my first tri I found out I couldn’t swim, because we have a pool I just thought “she’ll be right” so after lots of freestyle (haha; yeah no) dog paddle; breaststroke (which I also never learned) and backstroke (which I could pull off,) I didn’t drown (but the organisers looked mighty alarmed) but it was hit and miss for 200mtrs and this was a 50mtr pool, not open water. Done 5 HIM distances and an Ironman since then, you can do it Alex, you are way ahead of me and I will be cheering you on from Aussieland, can’t wait to see your progress :)
Haven't read through all the comments so it's probably already been suggested...but to inspire him a little more GTN should fully kit him out for race day (well let him train a bit especially with the bike beforehand) and I think he would do even better!!! Great video!!!
Been watching the channel for a while but only just seen this series, which I'm glad I did as I've had the itch to want to try a triathlon. I'm planning to do a Duathlon first but seeing this has helped give me confidence that with my limited swim skills I might be ok, not great, but ok! Would love to see more series like this with different newbies, perhaps a female athlete next too.
Just been cleared to start running again after a leg injury. So excited to get back into it. I'll use the beginner training plan since my fitness is currently....poor at best
This is really encouraging. I keep thinking I'm the only newbie and am going to be facing former track stars, 13 year old phenoms and 90 year old fitness freaks. Good to remember that others are just starting too.. I'm down to 3 weeks until my first, also sprint distance but they have a nearly 23k bike ride on hills in store for us. Can I borrow your coaches, though?
This is great! I'm set to do the Coeur D'Alene, Idaho 70.3 next June and I've never done any triathlons before. I have a mini in October and a sprint in February that'll be my tests along the way. I'm documenting all my training and officially started my 50-week plan last Monday. So stoked!
Just in time as I have my first triathlon in 2 months and will start the hard training now. Looking forward for the training plan and I think I will follow it as well. Great initiative for beginners as the sprint is usually the entry point.
I really enjoyed this video and look forward to following Alex along his journey. Keep the film rolling :). I might even hit the notifications so I don't miss any videos.
Looks like a lot of fun! Open water really can be a different beast. First time even after lots of pool swimming I found the panic of the open water made it really hard to catch my breath.
How cruel can you be? riding by a pub and not stopping. LOL I am looking forward to Alex's progress. Reminds me of when I started my journey, my bike was horrid . Now, with buy buy new gear, a new bike and the training I am having fun. Oh the luxury of swimming in a pool. I don't get that until winter. I am always in a lake. This will be an interesting series.
Great idea for a series useful to many people. Would you also consider tracking the progress of an elite age grouper striving for a Kona spot and post a training plan applicable to more advanced athletes? Your channel attracts a variety of athletes and it would be great to cover the spectrum of abilities. Thanks for considering!
Loved this! Going to follow along. Similarly decided to tackle a sprint triathlon on September 11th. Just ran my first 5k about ten days ago - used a simple interval training program. Came in at just under 31 minutes, so I’ve got something to build off of. Can’t wait to continue to check in for more videos! Thanks again 🤘🏼
Alex is probably a pretty good rock climber with his gymnastics and parkour background. There are a lot of great UK-based rock climbing content creators he could collab with.
Awesome series idea! Might give it a go myself. It would be great to have some idea of minimum spend for equipment to do something like this as buying equipment is something that stops me from getting into triathlon.
Running is quite a breeze for me. My record 10k is 44'37". I haven't ridden a bike recreationally in 3 years. I have a strong swimming background but it's been a while since I have swam as well. I want to complete a sprint triathlon. Most of the exercise I get now is from jumping rope, running, and my rowing machine.
I remember one time riding 38 miles on a mountain bike that didn't fit me and with flat tires in the heat. it was some fundraising event. I was miserable.
Great job Alex. Could your channel follow an out of shape 50 something year old training from start to finish a sprint tri? I’m that person, having trained for first six weeks of six months of training for first sprint tri. I had bariatric surgery 18 months ago. I’m competing my first two years with a triathlon. Would love to watch a video of someone doing something similar.
Alex’s. Ike vs an entry level road bike time would be a good video. Get him some power meter pedals but he can’t see the data, so we can know, but he can’t so it’s realistic for a beginner.
Be good to do this with a person from the couch. 5.30 min km is a fairly fit person already 7 to 8 min km's would be an untrained person. and he is already a swimmer.
Can we get a list of equipment ? What bike was Alex using, what tyres and pressure was he running. Also the nutritional program specifically for the ride ? Two ales or a pint of lager followed by a shandy ?
as far as i can tell, sprints are intended to be 90 minutes (give or take) of pure suffering. so if you can each alex how to endure that then he'll go far.
Cold water on my face swimming makes me want to involuntary breathe takes some getting used to... Warm pool water have much more control over breath timing
At first I thought he’d go from couch to full Ironman in 8 weeks. I’d love to see a series on that (obviously with a longer training plan to get ready).
thank you for actually using a beginner, instead of the usual "beginner" who's done a half marathon
hahahaha true mate
What a great series!!! Nice to see a “normal” bloke putting himself out there and giving it a go what more we get to follow him on his journey.
I started learning how to swim because I want to try triathlon.

Alex is going to fly in a couple months time! I wish we could all have ex-pros coaching us 1 on 1 haha
Yes, please. I've even got a spare room for you! 🤣
Great show. Doing my first sprint in three weeks. This channel has been the best source of tips and motivation. Keep up the great work!

Outstanding! Looking forward to more episodes! Great job! So who’s the new camera 🎥 person?
Really looking forward to following along. Just might need to finally get a membership at our local leisure centre so that I can do swim training.
This is relatable
I'm a healthy but relatively unfit 20 year old who wants to start getting outside and accomplishing stuff. So this video is almost perfect for me lol
You can do it, Alex!
When you said you liked videogames - you got my like button!

Wait, so if Alex is the cameraman, and he's doing triathlon training in the video, who's running the camera 😀😃😄?

Heather, of course…😂
