Did this a couple years ago, it was just as magical as it was "back in the day". I've got a group that returns every/every other winter and we play like nothing has changed. The community is still there, you just have to search a little harder or create it yourself.

This was such a good game. It was.. really artistic. It was expansive, imaginative, yet something about it touched down to earth. It had a lot of depth and created a lot of memories. I would say this is the true spirit of gaming. No games made these days goes near it and are all just pumped out by corporations to make money.
The story is captivating, more so than other games. You have 3 nations, that have separate stories, but they also share the other stories (Zilart, Promathia, WoTG, ToAU) with one another. Something like FFXIV... all nation stories have converged.
This video is just amazing. Any person who has played this game, and actually played it, not just messed around will appreciate this video. I left the game a number of years ago, but after seeing this, I want to go back.

I have long since departed the world of vanadiel but as a former denizen I walked its paths for 10 long years... I could not remain in that world after so many of long and cherished friends had likewise moved on... I lost my will to continue playing... Those long years under tanaka may not have always been the best but I loved the game and the world for the times I spent there, for the flaws and for the peaks.
This video hit me so hard in the feels. While the game is nowhere near it's former glory, Vana'diel will always be my home away from home and it will forever hold that special place in my heart.
This will always be my favorite game and I will play 'til they close down the servers. FFXI got me through a lot of tough times and I met a lot of quality people. Raves, gigs, amusement parks, clubs, parties, road trips, or shopping, could ever come close to the fun I have had playing this game. I wasn't the best player. I didn't have elite amounts of gear and I couldn't put in hours and hours of playing time but when I came home FFXI was always there when I needed it to be. TY ♥ FFXI ♥
There actually was and still is.. on HorizonXI. Most of the server is pretty much getting geared, the early days felt like how I remembered XI as a kid/teen. Feels bad for the folks that would prob enjoy HorizonXI but will miss out.

Wow this is old. The level cap was 75. There was no Blue Mage, Puppetmaster, Corsair, Dancer, Scholar, Rune Fencer, or Geomancer. There was only the middle lands -- no Near East, no western continent, no Reisenjima, no Shadowreign era. Getting around was harder. No mounts that you could summon anywhere. No home point warp, no warp ring, no survival guide warps, no Voidwatch warps, no Unity warps. Also the video itself is one of the oldest on RUclips -- uploaded during its first year when hardly anyone knew what it was.
I stopped at 75 for a good while after lots of amazing adventure and effort. I'd never played anything like it, only a couple of other games here and there. The story and the work that must have gone into this still amazes me. Re-joined after the 99 cap and wow it's good to be back. All of the expansions are brilliant. Did I mention it's good to be back? 😀
18 years later and I still watch this video. I keep wishing I could experience FFXI again like I did back then, that game was way ahead of its time and nothing will ever be quite like it.
I spend 2006-2012 playing it too :/ its so sad that the old FFXI's over and i have no SS's of it at all nor vids :/ - Sometimes i kinda wish the old times to come back like 2006-2008, were the 2 best years i had on my life. This video almost makes me cry because of the piano part at the end, even though ive never played the game. Nobuo Uematsu is a legendary composer. The graphics remind me of FFX which I used to play all the time.
I'm pretty much sure we will see 10th and 15th (maybe more) anniversaries of this incredible game. Actuallly FFXI is not a game, it is a lifestyle, a social club you spend your time within leisure hours. Very decent community, mature people, lots of fun together. Most important of all, it has incredibly rich content and huge amount of detail in every aspect. I'm playing for more than 3 years and it still amazes me, still lots to discover. I remember reading the thread Cruia made on KI when it first came out. FFXI was one of the best games I've ever played. Miss the game and the friends I made so much.
Wish I could bring back the feelings that went along with this game years ago. Stepping outside into the ronfaure for the first time, spending days hunting sub job items, getting to jeuno the first time, getting your advanced job, killing the shadow lord, spending countless hours looking for help to complete AF quests, completing so many painful limit break quests, hitting 75... I've never experienced something with so many emotions before in my life, ever.

Hard to believe after starting this game on PC back in 02’ in high school. This game has probably had the biggest impact on my life (in terms of games), and I’ve made several lifelong friends. Really hoping a remake for mobile comes out!
One of the hardest things had to do recently was quit XI. I'd been mulling it over as I hadn't been able to keep a regular-enough schedule for a static or LS and I kept falling behind. But a job loss sealed the deal and I walked away from four years of amazing, frustrating, lovely, incredible, painful and exciting memories. Soloing on WHM is nigh-impossible but I loved to heal and help and *that* is what pains me - missing out on helping others enjoy such a wonderful place! RDB and Milk, /bow

The magic behind this game was it's depth. Everyone complained XP was too hard, items are too rare and hard to get. The real magic in this game wasn't the items you got, it was the time and dedication you put into getting those items for yourself and your friends. The game was not about capping levels and obtaining gear, it was about the relationships you made while completing goals. We also appreciate things more the harder it is to get or complete. Good things in life don't come easy, and easy come easy go. I will truly miss this game and adventures and fun I had. Thank you to all the players that made this game what it was, specifically the people on Leviathan.

Even though it doesn't take 6 months to reach level cap, FFXI is still a great game to play with friends. Though i do miss training goblins to zone at the dunes.

Wow, I watched this so many times since it was made, but after time has passed with me quitting, its like a brand new video.

Hard to believe after starting this game on PC back in 02’ in high school. This game has probably had the biggest impact on my life (in terms of games), and I’ve made several lifelong friends. Really hoping a remake for mobile comes out!
One of the hardest things had to do recently was quit XI. I'd been mulling it over as I hadn't been able to keep a regular-enough schedule for a static or LS and I kept falling behind. But a job loss sealed the deal and I walked away from four years of amazing, frustrating, lovely, incredible, painful and exciting memories.
Soloing on WHM is nigh-impossible but I loved to heal and help and *that* is what pains me - missing out on helping others enjoy such a wonderful place! RDB and Milk, /bow

WOw, this game brings back so many good memorizes. I could go on and on about how good of a game this was. The fact that you needed a party to lvl up allowed me to meet hunderds of people. No game out can match this game! and i played Wow....
I missed my LS-Phantasmagoria friends with so many memories, and adventures together. Problem is that there's to much time consuming so... Yeah, I will still have FFXI dreams forever.

Never forget your past huh? Never got past level 54 even after years of playing. (I'm not the most sociable person lol. So I never had anyone to help me break level caps.) But, I still have all kinds of nostalgia from this game. Especially from a little blue wyvern who kept me company all those years.

Remasa, Mandarb, Xetas, Toxicity, Rain, Yunnie, Ironscowl, Kraizyguy, and many many others i forgotten. My heart will always be in Vanadiel and with u all.

The magic behind this game was it's depth. Everyone complained XP was too hard, items are too rare and hard to get. The real magic in this game wasn't the items you got, it was the time and dedication you put into getting those items for yourself and your friends. The game was not about capping levels and obtaining gear, it was about the relationships you made while completing goals. We also appreciate things more the harder it is to get or complete. Good things in life don't come easy, and easy come easy go.
I will truly miss this game and adventures and fun I had. Thank you to all the players that made this game what it was, specifically the people on Leviathan.

If I wasnt so eager to wait for Aion's release, i'd probably come crawling back to FFXI after seeing this. After about 5 years of not playing, I think I'm starting to miss it.

Even though it doesn't take 6 months to reach level cap, FFXI is still a great game to play with friends. Though i do miss training goblins to zone at the dunes.

Like everyone else, I need to drop a couple lines. I cant agree more with most of these comments. FFXI was truly an amazing experience and journey.. that I feel will never be replicated or replaced by any other game.. ever. There is just something about XI.. it holds a very special place in my heart and in my past. The way the game made you feel, the style and design, the community.. I really miss it. At least, like you guys have said, we have these memories and they will forever be with us :D
