Kung sila pala ang ipapadala rito, sana sinalang na sila noong PVL Invitationals. Sayang din 'yon. Kurashiki Ablaze and U20 Thai National Team din 'yon.
No choice kundi nu uli.
It would have been interesting to see a young PVL team, like ZUS or Capital 1, to compete in the AVC Club championships. However, as per reports, several of them declined, hence NU was again chosen. Personally, i would have wanted to see Thea Gagate finally play for ZUS. On another note, with the issue regarding that somewhat controversial semi-final game between Akari and PLDT, my thoughts are: 1. Since, there was already the policy of the top 4 teams in the reinforced conference who were required(?) to play in the invitationals, both Akari and PLDT should not have been allowed to withdraw so suddenly just because of the bad outcome of that game. Not sure, but were they not under contract with the PVL; i assume the rules were written in black and white, and duly signed by the PVL top management or board of directors and each of the team owners/managers? If so, then that would be a breach of contract and disrespect to the league. 2. Akari should have stayed and played in the invitationals. Was there really an immediate need to reward the entire team with a trip abroad(?) - it could have been done after the invitational tournament. I do understand that the bashing/booing they received was undeserved and hurtful- it was not their fault with re the misjudgment in the ref's calls. But for me, the better course of action would have been to keep their head high and show to everybody their professionalism and unity as a team. It should have been an impetus for them to prove their doubters wrong, and come out stronger as a result. In reality, you cannot dictate the spectators, especially Filipinos who are known to be very vocal. You cannot tell NOT to cheer or boo, so if you're a pro team, you just have to prepare yourselves to zone out and focus on the game, especially in front of a not so friendly crowd. 3. For PLDT - again same with Akari. Unfortunately, they got the short end of the stick in that crucial game. But occurrences like these are not uncommon in many professional leagues, volleyball and otherwise. It is unfortunate, yes, but i don't think there was a deliberate intent to favor the other team. Maybe in the future, if they really want to go as far as the finals, then they should make this incident a driving force to improve as a team. I recall a similar incident years back, during an FIVB qualifiers game between Thailand and Japan (who was the host country that time), where there was a controversial call (or non-call) in a tightly contested game, prompting the Thai coach to call for a challenge, but was denied. This eventually led to Japan winning the game and being qualified to the World Cup. The Thai players were visibly upset after the game, most of them crying (it was when Pleumjit and the other senior players were still with the team). But i do think this incident made them stronger as a team, as evidenced by their recent performance in the VNL these past years. I dont recall them filing a protest, or declaring that they will withdraw from future tournaments. They chose the high path. I say this because there have been reports (dont know if they're accurate) that PLDT plans to take a break or withdraw from the next conference. Huh? If true, what about the players? What will they do during that time, sulk while watching the other teams play? It will even be more detrimental for them, physically and mentally, to continually let that one bad game become like a cloud over their heads for longer than necessary. I think the best thing the management can do is to hire a professional team psychologist or counsellor to help the team process that loss in a healthy manner, make it a learning experience, then move on. Train harder so they can become better as a team, deserving to be in the finals. 3. For Alas, congrats to them, both players and coaching staff, for they have done well these past months. Lets all hope their dedication never wavers, and that they will consistently move in the right direction.
