Starting my PhD next week, thanks for these videos Andy, they make me rethink a lot of things, I used to be the type of guy who would judge himself for having any financial aspirations, I pretty much forced myself into the romantic idea of being an academic and to stick to the standard university education ladder. I'll be on the lookout for other ventures during my PhD learning real world skills and learning about businesses.
PhD isn't bad, but the science world shoud represent it's interest much better and send people into serious positions. Scientific and responsible thinking is much more important nowadays than earlier (environment problems, scarcity or raw materials, etc)
same, watching because I'm trying to apply for PhD programs and figured it'd be good to start getting an idea of how I would best leverage it should I end up successfully getting one.
I "only" have a master degree and now I work for a private company. Much of this is also true for writing a BA and master thesis. And I would like to add: If you can get a master degree, you can teach yourself anything given enough time and effort.
I'm guessing you have already read the news about OpenAI's recent model preview o1. Their article about it boasts above PhD level performance due to reasoning. Is there a video or videos about test cases and/or impact on research? 🙂
It can brute force PhD student level answers to word problems. It’s essentially identically useful as it was before but the accuracy is potentially higher. I think in coding tasks the likely hood that it runs is a little high as well.
Thank you!!! I've downloaded the pdf, and it is so correct. I am not good at marketing myself or figuring out what jobs to search for, but I *know* how capable I am in a position given to me. So, I'm finishing up my first book and coming up with a marketing strategy. Anyone needing a social psychologist (working through the doctorate now) who coaches, teaches, and writes, contact me! Thank you, Andy!
Assuming the PhD is trying to enter a discipline outside their own, "transferable job skills" cannot compete with job candidates who have majored or have experience in the field the Phd is trying to get into. From a job hires point of view, if you have one candidate who majored in or has years of experience in your field, why would you choose another candidate (PhD w 'transferable skills') who isn't/doesn't?
the only thing I can imagine is that they want someone to think out-of-the-box and that could be someone who doesn't belong to the field. maybe polymaths (it's difficult but not impossible to find them). Also, there's a rise in complexity and uncertainity. Complex problems requires thinking in different perspectives or a mix of different disciplines (in one mind, because, there's a barrier between professionals who are not from the same field, simply because of their different mental models). Specialization it's ok, but not for everyone or everything, there's people who are diverse, generalists, multipotentialies or polymaths. Innovation and solving complex problems sometimes comes from exploring and mixing completely different fields. To obtain purple, you need to mix red and blue, if you only focus in one (blue, for example) you'll never find/see purple.
my problem is… i watch your video, i put down ‘interpersonal skills’ in my CV, i’ll get asked about them during and interview and i’ll say ‘oh I just dealt with awkward narcissistic academics, my field is full of them’ 😅 need to be a better diplomat :) helpful video tho !!
Can you do a PhD without cutting on the potential earning budget while doing the PhD. I know universities want to attract PhDs to work for less money. But are there other options. Especially from a money stand point?
What I am often wondering is: Academia has many problems and there are good reasons to leave it. But once you have a PhD, aren't you more or less doomed to be overqualified for every job that isn't associated with high overtime, high pressure, much stress and many of the problems you wanted to leave behind and the only difference is that you get paid accordingly?

I obtained my PhD months ago and still don’t know where I want to end up. But I’m ok with that.
This is such a relevant topic. Hardly anyone talks about it, even when everyone struggles with it.
I'm not a PhD job seeker but I'm watching anyway
I've changed the title - but I hope people will still watch it!
I knew this information intuitively, but never framed it as clearly and accurately as Andy did in this video. Thank you very much!

Same.
A PhD student can become a good innovator and enterpreuner.
But they will be an EXCELLENT inventor and researcher.
P= project manager H= human interpersonal skill CEO D= discipline specific knowledge = why we are valued!! 😀 Thank you Andy!!
I love the effects you've added to your videos!
Such a great video! Thank you Andy

Gold! I completed my PhD 6 years ago, but this is still very useful. Thanks!

That beard fears no Bonferroni-Holm
You rock!🎉
I am exploring the thought of doing an mphil to develop new skills and boost my non-academic career growth, but will be 50 in january.
"Can you deal with awkard people?" Well, I'm the awkward people, the awkward people is me 😝
Hi Andy, I just published my first solo author paper after finishing my PhD! Hurray for science. Any advice for sole wolf chemists?

I'm a PhD scholar at the last step of submission but still I'm not perfect assure that I'm doing well or not... Please guide in this regard

Wait, wait wait….. you can make a bomb?😂😂😂
That’s transferable alright 😂
But do you realize all those skills are not unique for a PhD and for sure are better people in the industry with those skills
I wish no one went to school and read books instead in the first place
I feel like I know these things, selling myself and explaining it to non-phd folks ‘til I’m blue in the face is the hard part 🫠
