    Whoa … what are you two doing? That’s a lot of energy to expend with not a lot of food around right now, I think they are waiting for ice sheet, so they can hunt seals, aren’t they? Thank you to anyone who might know.

      Yes just waiting for the ice to form so they can hunt seals again. Play fighting is a means to socialize and practice for when they fight during mating season in spring. :)

    That was awfully languid and affectionate to call it sparring. Lots of yawning, nuzzling, stretching and maybe taking a dump. They act like an old married couple, or old friends or siblings who played together, as kids, bored and goofing off. I think it is obvious that they know each other, well. Thanks for the clip. We usually get to see only solitary bears or moms with cubs.

      Sparring AKA play fighting is a way to assess each other and practice for when they fight for real out on the ice during mating season. This is the only time of year that the PBs congregate to wait for the ice to form. They are otherwise solitary creatures.
