    for those not in the know, only omnimechs can carry battle armor with them because the lore says their gyros are made to adapt on the spot to whatever new weight imbalance is going on due to the expected constant loadout swaps. which means that strategically the Gun was one of the smarter moves by the CCAF to support their combined arms garrisons.

      Ok then that's neat. But now I wish that after an arm or a torso is blown, the mech was easier to topple. Say a check would be made after 15 damage and not 20. Or it would be harder to pass, so 20 damage but +1 difficulty bc no side torso.

  • @victor227
    @victor227 Год назад +26

    Somehow the pronunciation of the Gùn isn't the deadliest thing about it. Small, cheap mechs seem ideal for making use of omnipod tech and Endo-Steel frames as you can make use of economy of scale in supporting them. Far easier to supply en mass planet-side than mechs five times their weight and cost, though transporting a lot of them is going to eat up dropship space and limit frontline use.
    Acting as a tank/infantry support really lets it shine in filling in any gap on the fly thanks to multiple configurations, and of course, it's got that traditional Capellan electronic warfare shine to it as well. Just plop on the parts you need and you've got a quick version of one of those 'oh god why does it have an AC/20' Urbanmechs with the Heavy PPC, or a Raven replacement. Just need to have the parts on-hand to outfit them, which seems a great use for local garrison storage.

      It’s a bold move in the opposite direction that Omnimechs have traditionally taken as far as design cues are concerned in the IS, with modern omnis mostly being expensive flagship assault or heavy mechs, or recon/trooper mediums. Only time will tell if the CC can maintain a healthy enough industry to make this Omni-garrison trooper a success.

  • @colbyboucher6391

    It's weird to me that infantry support mechs aren't more common. So many border worlds hardly have any 'mechs at all, and urban combat is so dangerous for most, you'd think it would be great to get something light and relatively cheap for easy superiority *without* it being AT / basement bomb fodder.
    That's one thing I'm loving about the new era. Combined arms FTW.

      One of the big problems with infantry support mechs in the succession wars this is that the only infantry they would support are standard infantry. Then after the invasion era only House Liao was interested in the concept because Battle armor fit well with large Infantry formations garrisoning many worlds the tiny House military could not assign notable mech forces other than an Urbanmech or two. Then as the technology came about they developed the Fa Shih battle armor to ride on mechs with their Mag-clamps but really no one else even bothered as they could just try and use transport vehicles and standard light and medium mech support, or just have a simple transport system with some of their local Omni-mechs, even though they would not support the Battle armor afterword.
      Once again House Liao led with using a purpose built 20 ton Omni out of a need for the Battle armor more than an expensive lance of front line Omni-mechs. For House Liao this is just a natural progression to get more use out of their incredibly poor military units that will often be centered around Infantry of all types.

  • @fedupN
    @fedupN Год назад +17

    Ok, I love everything about this thing as it ticks so many of my boxes.
    One, its a Capellan mech. Suck it, you Davion shitheels.
    Two, COMBINED ARMS FREAKING FINALLY! Look, Battletech is inherently contradictory and stupid about its application of military theory and why things work, but something that is designed to move with battle armor (because if you can miniaturize your deadly weapons, do it) and work with infantry and tanks, hits the right buttons.
    Third, a twist on the utilitarian side of mech stuff. I love the concept of Sentinels, Urbanmechs, and other "B-side mechs." in giant stretches of territory, on freaking interstellar empires, this would be vital.
    Fourth, Omnimechs. This touches on point two. It has NEVER made sense for Omnimechs (particularly for the Clans) to cost so much more. Having universal, replaceable parts alleviates supply lines, not aggravates them. Particularly when that technology has been around for decades to centuries.
    Fifth...The A Config. HEAVY PPC ON A TINY MECH. Mechs as a weapon platform. Yes.

      Look here, just because the greatness of House Davion causes you jealous Cappies to melt down, doesn’t mean you can run your mouth indiscriminately. Its (probably) not pronouced Guin or Gwyn. The Cappies like their Mandarin Chinese right? Gùn would be pronounced "Goon", but with a shortened and hardened "oo". In Chinese, this means cudgel or staff, 棍.
    Thematically it also makes sense as the Gùn is an Omnimech. In Chinese martial arts, the staff is considered the most versatile of weapons; it can be a spear if thrusted, a sword if slashed, a shield if used to parry. Its also literally just a stick, used by the poorest of militia.

    House Liao knew exactly what they want when they make the Gun. If they wanted speed and more armor, an XL engine would have gotten them that.
    But instead the GUN uses a standard engine.
    And it is not like House Liao lacks money either (look at ALL those XL engine heavies and assaults Lao Hu, Thunder, Yu Huang etc).
    But standard engine mechs are actually a lot more durable, so the 3.5 ton armor might be deceptive and not to mention a lot easier to maintain.
    Especially if the mech is attached to an infantry unit or planetary garrisons which may not have the best tech support.

  • @scytheseven9173
    @scytheseven9173 Год назад +1

    The Gùn is a superbly-armed and equipped light 'Mech in all its configurations, but it's as slow as a Hornet, can't jump, and has even less armor. As infantry support it can do its job very well, but I do not expect to hold up if it's ever pushed into frontline service against anything near a peer foe-while it can hit hard and the B's electronics package is fantastic, even a Locust should be able to hunt down and kill it. Its small cockpit and XL gyro also make it harder to pilot and easier to disable, not good to deal with. It can at least withstand a single medium laser shot to everywhere but its rear, but a large laser shot anywhere will go internal. Except with some very clever teamwork, if, say, Lyrans send Commandos and Wolfhounds after the Gùns I'd expect a massacre, and not in the CCAF's favor.

    Another weakness that I might add is that, for a light mech, it is not cheap and requires specialized manufacture facilities in order to make it and specialized pilots to pilot it. This is the type of mech you would send in garrison high profile worlds and/or on worlds that with insurrection issues. Not a mech that you would see in every Capellan world unlike urbanmechs and locusts.
