Man, Webb is just thoroughly unlikeable in this show. There's a pair of movies starring Hugh Beaumont playing as "Mike Shayne" that are essentially this show with the names changed (right down to having his business down on the waterfront near the Embarcadero, the sort-of-hostile-but-not-realistically- so cop and the drunk intellectual researcher ally) and Hugh is just utterly superior in the role in every way. It's not like the writing's even much different, just that Hugh knows how to deliver these tough guy lines and seem clever rather than coming across like a bitter asshole the way Webb does. Really a shame Hugh only had four "episodes" spread over two films and Webb got dozens.
